    Now I'm new to cast iron but the Lodge (spray paint) seasoning didn't react like regular oil seasoning in my electrolysis tank. I find most all my pieces in second hand shops so I don't know where they've been. I lead test them and strip em so I know what's on em. Thanks to you I've learned how to do that. You're my go to guy for cast iron. There's so many bad videos out there that you can't just listen to anyone. Thank you from Dayton Tn.

    Great video and good to see you back with tutorials. Can you share your suggestions on storing the seasoning medium and the cloths that are being used to prevent them becoming rancid. I know you have given me suggestions in the past and would be good to share with all. I'm sure others may have the same question. Keep up the great information and videos.

      Putting them in a plastic bag and depressing out of the air will out of the air will help quite a bit. Keeping everything in a plastic container and maybe even in the refrigerator can help.Don't forget that Oily rags laying around can also cause a fire hazard.

    I gave the Blacklock seasoning a chance. I was very upset with the purchase until I stripped it and seasoned it again. Now it’s one of my favorite daily users. Great design. Decent price for what you are getting. Just lack luster seasoning.
    I do love that skillet though.

      How did people ever cook without Teflon? 😉 I use cast iron or carbon steel for everything except acidic foods for which I use clad stainless steel. Teflon pans always wear out.

    I strip the Lodge seasoning off with oven cleaner. Then I wash thoroughly with Dawn and scrub brush or stainless scrubbing pad. Dry. Seasoning commences with Crisco at lower temps on the stove top. I buff it down till the surface looks matte instead of shiny.

    Thanks for the video, and I watched about 5 so far about what to do with a new cast iron skillet and you are the first to say you can use soap after you've cooked with it. All of the others said it's fine the very first time to get it clean from all the handling but everyone of the other video specifically stated that that would be the last time soap is ever used. You have a different take and it's interesting. But my who life I've always been told to never use soap on cast iron.

    The middle of my lodge is gray and and not even inside the pan. I washed it when I got it. I heat it up and use hot water and a scratch free scrubber to clean it. Them dry and re heat it up .. I've tried seasoning on the stove or in the oven. I do 450 for 1 and half hours. I've used bacon grease,grape seed and shorting. I use it every day

    Spot-on advice. Received a modern Lodge set year or two ago. (They didn't realize the difference between my 3-notch pans) Well, I just started cooking frequently in them, deep-frying as much as I could. They are getting so good I may regret paying the premium I did for my 3-notch stuff!

    !!! Greeting from Montréal, Québec, Canada !!! Went to my local dollar store 'Dollorama' and just to have some sort of memory of my passed away mother in 1994, I bought a little 6" inch cast Iron pan (does not really feel like the original stuff, but still..._ and going back to the store, found a 8.5" x 5.1" x 1.4" Cast Iron Baking dishmade by 'Betty Crocker' shall use it for the fun of remembering my mother and in the near future, shall buy the REAL DEAL no matter the cost !!! Looking foraward to buying a 'Corn Bread' Cast Iron mold and start ENJOYING the spelndid flavor of crusty corn bread fresh from home !!! If you wonder WHY I chose a Priest Image for my identification it is because in 2005, I tought about becoming either a Priest or a Missionary to go teach english in Latin America, but being closer to my pension (2 1/2 years from now NOVEMBER 7 2025) and with all the bad news I see and read about Mexico, Colombia, El Salavador, I am not too sure now I want to risk my last days in possibly losing my life in doing something that was dear to my heart soooo...still thinking about it !?! You can, but a light sanding will not hurt it and I think that it will help by removing the high points without removing the existing seasoning.

    Thank you sir… I just discovered your channel and subscribed. I am really enjoying your content as I just love my grandmother’s original skillet (a Wagner #8). Yesterday I picked # 10 Wagner at the thrift store even though the exterior has been abused over a campfire. I just ordered Easy Beezy and am so excited to clean up the #10 if possible. I don’t want to strip it and it looks quite sound otherwise. Wish me luck 🍀 😊

    I received a new Lodge 8" skillet for Christmas. washed it with hot water, dried it in a hot oven. Melted some butter in it and started frying eggs. First egg, no stick. Washed in hot water and dried in an oven. never had anything stick. My recommendation is just start cooking with it. Question, What should I do with my new cast iron skillet? Answer, Get to cooking!!!!

    I'm very new to caste iron cooking and just purchased two of the Blacklock by Lodge. So you say I should wash and dry it first? Now do you actually just use and old t-shirt for wiping and buffing or is there a special cloth I should buy? What's in your eezy-breezy oil? Thanks for the video.

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Always wash and dry any cast iron that you take in because you do not know who's handled it. I like to use old T-shirt material for applying seasoning oil. Easy Beezy is a blend of Beeswax Grapeseed oil and Avocado oil. The percentages are proprietary.

    Beginner steps 1-10
    Fry bacon in your skillet.
    Step 11
    Enjoy your skillet

    • @eminusipi

      I think that it depends on the type of bacon since ones with a lot of sugar will leave a sticky mess in your pan.

  • @ladylibertystacker2014
    @ladylibertystacker2014 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Funny that you put up a video on this. I just bought a "new" Lodge cast iron skillet, but it was in a thrift store, so I stripped it. When I was new to cast iron about 5 years ago, I remember seeing a Martha Stewart video saying it was OK to wash it out the first time with soap and water to remove the sticky residue it had. I don't remember much after that. Your instructions are much better in my opinion and very similar to the way I do it! 😉 You mentioned your rag. My question is how long do you use the same rag to spread the seasoning and what do you do once it is no longer usable? I have never seen that addressed on TH-cam unless I missed it! lol

      My seasoning clothes go through a little bit of a my of a migration. They start off as a clean wipe down cloth until they get infused with oil. After they are infused withoil, they become application cloth. After they start looking cruddy, I use them for my first application when the cast a
      Iron is still producing residue. Once I decide to dispose of them, they make great fire starters. Lol

    • @ladylibertystacker2014
      @ladylibertystacker2014 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@castIroncookware Fire starters! lol. I love it! That would be perfect to use with my wood burning stove, I just never thought of that. In the warmer months, I would put them in a tin can to be disposed of in the trash, sealed of course. Thanks! 👍

    My seasoning doesn't stay (which I know means it isn't seasoned). As soon as I was it, it goes back to being dull and leaving specks when I wipe it out. I tried doing it it in the oven (four times!), I've tried on the stove top, I've tried high heat, low heat, coconut oil, avocado oil, crisco, olive oil...What am I doing wrong?!?
