My dad is a consultant for things like this. He makes sure that an area isn't contaminated before people build things or move in and whatnot. He's had to deal with nasty cases where other consultants have lied to their clients to get out doing the work.
There was an old woman who moved into a country house that had toxic waste in the land, specifically around the well. She eventually had to move out when it came to light. It was a good thing the problem was found early, otherwise she could have gotten horribly sick from drinking the water. Unlike in Fallout, you'll be happy to hear that the idiot who halfassed his job got sued and lost. Sadly the house had to be condemned and demolished.
Just goes to show that things like this can happen in real life, albeit to a lesser extent. If you want a good example of a severe case of careless contaminations, look up the Walkerton E. coli outbreak. Farms were dumping literal shit into local wellsprings.

That reminds me of a story that happened in Germany, where abandaned
parts of an ironworks were to be demolished and turned into a park to
serve as a buffer between the remaining parts of the factory and the
neibourhood on the other side of the street. It was clear there would be
toxic waste in the ground and that they would need to decontaminate it,
it's been heavy industry after all. Yet, when it turned out that they'd
have to dig deeper than initially expected, the ironworks revoked their
consent to collaborate. Hell knows what they've buried there that they don't
want unearthed. They still built the buffer park however - after
tearing down one half of the neighbopurhood to make room for it.

You only need to look at a list of superfund sites to see that the behavior highlighted in this video does actually happen in the real world. Real world companies tended to be smarter about it though, and dumped/buried waste far from cities, for the most part. Still, there were plenty of "Love Canal" events in populated areas over the past century.

Considering the Sole survivors pre war life I can see why there's more attention paid to pre war stories.
Often the finds you make about pre war companies are revealing secret and terrible business practices, government corruption, military acrions so unethical it makes you wonder how the commanders managed to sleep at night. Things that the pre war player character likely didn't know about and perhaps part of the intended role playing was this revaluation of the world they knew being much more grim than they perhaps realised.
It's always been an element of the games, but this time it was more of a personal revelation.

Omega makes the themes of rebuilding the world feel a lot more...how we say...unwanted... after all with raiders about who don't need to do what they need to, and people in actual societies still acting the way we do today, it seems the world going to hell wasnt a lesson taught, but the beginning of another much bloodier chapter of history.

      @justanotheryoutubechannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I mean in fairness it is useful to know exactly *what* is causing their arms to melt. You can’t determine that from such a simple test, just that whatever it is in the lake is very deadly. But yes I agree the government was very corrupt back then and likely didn’t care too much. Also, the machines were already there sampling the water and had been that way for 15 months at least, and as the machines were already saying the water was dangerous to touch no one would want to put their hand in to see what would happen.

  • @cloudyvortex
    @cloudyvortex 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

More likely the government officials tasked with monitoring the lake knew damn well how toxic the water was, warned their superiors, and were duly ignored. A big theme of the Fallout was how all those in a position of power in the US were past the point of mere sociopathy and were actively cartoon villains even as ordinary people working under them still maintained normal levels of (im)morality.

Agreed. I must admit he is a prolific worker. i used to spend 3-4 hours just playing a game for a few hours, tops, and almost every gf i've had has dumped me "because you're more in love with that bloody computer than me"
More importantly, he is actually quite accurate.. he does make some silly , what i'd call 'rush mistakes', as i do that when i try to get work done too quickly and if i don't go over it a few times i find at least 10-20 mistakes that are quite silly because i was rushing. And editing is the master of the cinematic/videogrammatic art. ANY movie that has been made with a bad editor suffers badly. A GREAT editor can MAKE an awful normal length movie into a great short movie.

Here is a bit of science information for you. Uranium, Plutonium, and most of the radioactive materials that FO lore discusses are all classified as Heavy Metals. These heavy Metal contaminates will create radioactive contamination as they actively decay. Given the number of barrels at the bottom of the lake, it is no small surprise to see contamination exceed Sensor measurement ability.
Now, fecal contamination, The city water board may have moved a sewage pipe into the lake unknown to the public to handle the load that the water processing plant couldn't handle. If you look around more, you find plenty of Bloodleaf, Mutated Fern, and During my high level play through a Mirelurk Queen was hanging around the area, though i was level 98 at the time i saw her there.
Likely speaking, GA, Saugus, and MF were all dumping illegally as GA powered its robots with nuclear power (which is why they go nuclear and self destruct when you blow their arms off), Saugus likely dumped rubbish and left over slag (all the rubbish piles at the bottom of the lake. Try turning off your water effects and you can see PILES of it everywhere under the water), and of course, Mass Fusion was dumping drum loads of the stuff there at night when no one was around to see them. It was likely just because they were burning through so much of the stuff they couldnt dispose of it properly and keep up with the load.
Now if you look at the nearby GA Gallary, that was a public attraction and before it was closed due to incidents it had public restrooms. Meaning that it probably just piped the waste right into the lake rather than tie into the sewer system.
So we covered the majority of the pollution in the lake right there. But that level of pollution, you can see. You can see it easily (and smell it) thats why none of the scientists testing the water ever put their hands inside the water. They KNEW it was severely contaminated.

Michelle Alina Teague _ I used to live in Wakefield Ma, now I’m one town over in Lynnfield. The lore in Fallout is not too far off, there were corporations that used the lake in real life to illegally dispose of toxic materials. Even today people are advised to avoid swimming or even boating in the lake. Bethesda based the lore off of real life tragedy’s.

I grew up along this lake. having spent 25 years of my life next to it, the lake had a period of time about 20 years ago where it was actually very very dirty and unsafe to swim in. There was a large lengthy cleanup and the lake itself has improved greatly, but it made me laugh when even the in-game lore had it already pretty nasty before the war with trash leftover months after an event because that was spot-on for awhile. Now, the park and the lake are beautiful and I recommend seeing it if you’re ever in the area. It’s also the head of the Saugus river

Heavy metal contamination wouldn't implicate the Ironworks or the Assembly Plant. Most of the nuclear material used to actually power reactors is made of...you guessed it...toxic heavy metals. Fission rods in particular are generally still highly radioactive when they're disposed (though they're also hotter than all hell, which seems like it would be a dead giveaway of illegal dumping when the actual temperature of the lake started slowly climbing).
Now, there are other problems with heavy metal contamination and the various polluters implicated here - specifically, none of those things use any sort of tremendous amount of heavy metal (most nuclear waste consists of the tools and gear used in working with stuff - not old fuel rods), so it's hard to figure how any of them would put so much of it into the water of a lake that big that it blew out a sensor - but so far as sourcing goes, the likeliest one is still the nuclear energy facility and not either of those other places.

The boat on the trailer WAS for the fishing tournament, only reason it fell off was from either weight or the straps snapped off the trailer.
The pump was to feed it into the water tower to test the sensor for sampling.
I'm surprised the tower and the pump didn't immediately corrode itself from how polluted that water was.

A lake like this actually existed in real life and it's called Karachay. Quote from wikipedia: Some parts of the lake are extremely radioactive (600 röntgens/hour) and one could receive a lethal dose of radiation in 30 minutes (300 röntgens). The sediment of the lake bed is estimated to be composed almost entirely of high level radioactive waste deposits to a depth of roughly 11 feet (3.4 m)
One thing that bugs me though.
If that lake was THAT radioactive, it would probably be as yellow as that disposal site from one of the previous videos. And if the material was just deposited (like the barrels we see), the water would actually act as a shield and the story of people getting sick just by touching the water is a little bit far-fetched. Wouldn't people notice the discoloration of the water from all the contaminants?
Overall, it's a great and chilling story of the corporate greed, but there are some plot holes in it that break the immersion for me :/

I'd hope for a meta video tying together all the little bits about the Commonwealth in the aftermath of the bombs. That would be wonderous.

A lot of times you have to assume the lakes or whatever are actually bigger than what you see, there just wasn’t enough room for it. First of all, that couldn’t even be a lake, it would be a pond. It’s not deep enough to have an aphotic zone. Second, no way that’s big enough to have a public bass fishing tournament for Boston. You just gotta use your imagination sometimes.

I used to live about a block away from lake quannapowitt when I was younger. Eventually I left Wakefield and moved to the next town over, Lynnfield Ma. Still only about a 5 minute drive away from the lake. As someone who has jogged its perimeter I must say it’s depiction in game is not so far off. Major industrial sites in the town use to dump toxic materials into the lake before modern environmental regulations were implemented by the state, local and federal governments. None the less, many individuals and business’ still used the lake as their own private trash bin. Even to this day it is a dirty shithole, and people joke that a swim in the lake will leave you with one extra limb. Honestly I would not be surprised if barrels of toxic waste were sitting in the bottom of the lake.

My theory for why the flyer for the 4th fishing competition is on the table is because the man in the boat corpses is recent. It takes about 5+ years to bleach, and the flyer looks like it was weighted down. What if the man commited suicide because he couldn't take it anyone, and remembered the fishing days (as we is a non-feral ghoul), and the flyer was the only thing from the past.

Something tells me that when they were testing the waters and said that it should be closed, it was not bad enough to cause burns from touching the water. But on Jul 4, cause nothing was done to stop all the dumping that had been happening and maybe a exceptionally strong batch of stuff was dumped the night before, it caused people to have serious burns. I would think that at least something would of happened to have a government official touch the water at least once before the fishing event accidently or not so I have a feeling it has to be the fact that the dumping just kept on going that made it so much worse.

The only problem I have with this, and it is very minor, was your explanation at the skeletons in the boat that was sunk. If the fatalities happened on the 4th of July, they would have had plenty of time to recover the bodies to be buried. Even in hazardous water such as that, I dont think they would have just left them there. Then again, this is pre war fallout so maybe so. I always figured the bodies were wastelanders that tried fishing in the lake after the bombs fell but sank and were dissolved away by the highly corrosive effects of the water.
