Fat Mike is EASILY one of the most underrated bassists of all time. His bass lines are creative, challenging and melodic. He might not be as fast as Matt Freeman, but he's equally talented.
well, I'd say Mike is (way) more talented as a songwriter. Let's not forget Mike writes all nofx songs on their entirely. Not only bass lines, but lyrics, guitar riffs, melodies, harmonies, the whole thing. Matt contributes mostly with the bass lines probably (not taking anything away from Matt, obviously... the dude's amazing), since Lint is the main songwriter in Rancid. To each their own, I guess.
As a bass player this dude is one of my all time favorite bassists. His understanding of melody and chordal harmony is very impressive especially how heavily he uses both in this style of music . And he is amazingly proficient with pick playing, not to mention his song writing ability. People in general, especially bass players, just don’t understand how musically capable and complex Fat Mike is. He plays his role as a bass player perfectly within the songs he writes, that’s natural talent. Listening to this band most musicians never think the bass player is the writer of these songs and singer
@@cidpsg He's going into his Focusrite 2i4 as far as i can tell ( usb interface for like 150 quid) and then using plugins. for bass, i can really recommend Neural DSP's "Parallax" VST. It Distorts the mids and highs and keeps a clean low end without having to make two separate busses.
(he may well have a pedal before the interface or going out the back of the amp into the interface even but i just DI and record without any effects and then later decide on tone. .... takes away from the feeling when playing tho!
Great selection of songs. NOFX is my favorite punk band, and is the only band I'd consider getting tattooed on my body. Love seeing a video from a real fan who doesn't just stick with the obvious picks.
This is a great list. This dude is definitely super talented and clearly a real NOFX fan. Only song I might add is suits and ladders. The bass line in that song is so sick and weird af. Great job on this video
Kiddo, you are sick good. Subbed and will consider supporting after I watch more. This is just a question from an older bass player. It is obvious you can play with or without a pick just from your skill level, so, do you choose the pick because of the sound of the attack of it or because of the punk/ska music? Or both? Or something else? Regardless you are very impressive and major props from an older jazz guy. Loved it.
Dont know if its good or pathetic that I knew what the muted basslines were.. Anyway, it's cool you actually added more then just the (super catchy) basslines!
What’s effect did you used here ? Disto ? Overdrive ? Or sadly « PC plugin » OR other tricks stuff like this ... « plug and play like x or y band » You really sound like Fat Mike and without a Rickenbacker ! So it’s awesome...

Yes, i think that Matt Freeman is better on technique and solos but if we think that Fat Mike is also the singer of the band, man, he' s too good !
he a average 4 string guitarist..... playing with a pick is easy
Are you lonely?

Fuck! This was killer, you play so well and the attention to detail and choice of riffs was spot on. Well done dude, you're going places.
True meaning of why using a pick on bass. Thanks man.
As a bassist and fan of NoFX I approve. The only one you didn't hit that I love to play is All of Me
A fellow man of taste
Anarchy Camp
I was hoping that song was on here.
It’s “olive me” 😋
@@Ana.Banana.77 Olive you too. 😘
Bro you should totally do this for Matt Freeman as well :)
Cool medley of Fat Mike’s best! All songs played great! Maybe a part 2?
Great idea!😁👌
I forgot how good and original of a bassist Mike is
I heard they suck live...
Mike's lyrics is where he is truly gifted. Even if you don't agree with them
@@maxiepattie85 He's a decent lyricist but those bass lines are so original. Noone sounds like him.
@@jarellano4395 HA! We're both right!
That sucks!
@@maxiepattie85 Way to pat yourself on the back!!
Thanks for including Eat the meek. Props to Hefe too for that killing trompet. Love that song.
Bes th guitar solos
The Decline bassline (5:29) is so, so dope... so dope.

Bro, i liked yours chorus efect!! Sounds great!!! And the bass lines, you did pefectly well!
Been waiting for Idiots are taking over, too bad you didn't play the whole intro solo. Still slapped like though.
what's up, SLAPPER!
You need to pick like
he didnt play it right either he just doubles the first half of the riff rather than changing position for the last part as its properly played
His bass playing dont get talked about much
Cuz he is too busy saying shocking and offensive things...cuz well that's mike
@@shaggymatt92jacobs70 true,.got to give it to him though,in his 50s and still doing the full on punk thing right down to the mohican
@@davehoward22 yes sir
True. Imo, Fat Mike is like the Steve Harris of Punk
@@necrodamus5481 agree. The section of the Decline played in this video always makes me think of Steve/Maiden.
Huge NOFX fan. Amazing! Thank you for doing this!!!
Solid list but Bath of Least Resistance is a fantastic bass line and also one of NOFX's most slept on songs
I sat through two commercials just to watch the slowest fade out ever. Great vid dude! You rock!
You forgot (insert random NOFX song)
The Moron Brothers
That's my favorite song, too. How dare you!
Dont call me white
Great playing and that's a mighty bass sound you've got there.
Great selection of songs. NOFX is my favorite punk band, and is the only band I'd consider getting tattooed on my body. Love seeing a video from a real fan who doesn't just stick with the obvious picks.
Fat Mike. A Legend. Period.
I see Death of John Smith, I subscribe. Great job.
Excellent playing and man that tone is killer! Nice!

Great job! Sick tone! Should do some wilhelm scream bass covers sometime!
This should help Mike before he goes on the next tour
The bass solo from the decline is the sickest u know the one im talkin bout ;)
Playing is clean as hell
Excellent, sir.
The Decline is just 18 minutes of incredible playing. The solo is really difficult to 100% and it’s just genuinely fun to play
Hey! loved your bass tone! what do you use and how do you get this killer sound? it's awesome bro congrats !
Awesome.. Thanks for sharing
Love ur work
Nice! I love The Moron Brothers and Showerdays bass lines too

Dude nice new bass
Another great bassline is that part of Take two placebos and call me lame!
Jaw Knee sounds like a soundtrack for a Top Gear-like video game. hahah
Great vid
Can you do Operation Ivy bass lines?
Cool, man! Thanks!
Well done!👌😁
You totally forgot "All of Me", it has such a bitching bass line in the intro
it isnt a NOFX song dude, its a cover. id say thats why it isnt on here
@@ronpurdy4779 true but he made the bassline for it to be fair.

Yooo where’s your Weezer End Of The Game cover?? You always get them out so fast
What about 'we threw gasoline...' , huh?
Sounds good man! What equipment are you using besides the musicman?
What’s effect did you used here ? Disto ? Overdrive ? Or sadly « PC plugin » OR other tricks stuff like this ... « plug and play like x or y band »
You really sound like Fat Mike and without a Rickenbacker ! So it’s awesome...
Is the natural sound of a Sterling musicman!
Here’s where I see that there’s no point in playing punk bass lines with fingers
Awesome
What was the copyright claimed song?
Zack Merricks best bass lines should be a video
So what was the one immediately following the one that was muted (3:13)? There was no title.
There was it was still the same song before it got muted. Copyright system likes to be selective on which parts of a song it picks up.
Part 2 Please!!!
Sick!
Yeah
Can you do rancid next?
COULD HE?
Not sure he could handle some of Freeman’s progressions!!
What was the muted song title?
that bass is so sexy... got a stingray myself, mine's red
Noice shirt + noice bass lines = happy me
