[Thip Khao] First Exclusive Lao Food Restaurant in DC - Washington, DC

- With the encouragement from customers at her Thai and Lao establishment and the goal of promoting Lao culture and cuisine, Chef Seng opened the first exclusive Lao cuisine restaurant in Washington, DC in 2014. Sticky rice being the staple of Lao cuisine, Chef Seng named her restaurant, Thip Khao, which refers to the sticky rice serving basket, bringing locals and the Lao community together with a variety of authentic Laotian dishes. Chef Seng and her son, Chef Bobby are also the advocates of Lao Food Movement. Their goal is to raise awareness of Laotian culture through its cuisine, and to encourage the Lao community to appreciate and be proud of their culture and traditions.

Great video, but why do you say Lao AND Laotian in the video description? We don't use two names for Japanese cuisine and culture, right? The best way is to say Lao food, Lao community, Lao dishes, Lao culture, and etc. We do not need to say Laotian. We say Lao.

I ate there last year. Absolutely amazing! Had the chicken vermicelli soup you featured as well as grilled chicken hearts and crispy pig ear. But the best dish of all is the grilled pork neck. Stunning!

I like that they showcase some of other Lao dishes instead of the popular ones like thum muk hoong. Also that last dish you can dip or use the spoon. Most ppl do the spoon kuz it's cleaner and less messy

I’ve been to DC last summer and since I will be revisiting the area in summer 2019, I will be definitely going to visit this restaurant. I’m so proud to see our Lao community grow and succeed. Best of all, our sticky rice and rice baskets identifies us of who we are, our culture and heritage.

@The Hungry Black Panda, There is a reason Siam changed its name to “Thailand.” Most of modern Thailand today used to be part of the Lao kingdom of Lan Xang. Guess what Lao people refer to themselves as in the Lao language? Tai...and just because modern states and current borders are formed doesn’t mean the people disappear (there are more Lao ethnic people in the modern state of Thailand than all of Laos today and they also make up the majority of population of Thailand too but due to political reasons the Thai government call people by “regions” instead of by historical ethnic settlement affiliation). Even the modern Thai language has its roots in Lao (it is roughly 70% Lao and 30% mixed with Mon-Khmer). The distinction of “Thai”food being spicy? That comes from ethnic Lao foods influence. Real Thai food is no where near spicy as Authentic Lao food. I would even go as far to say ethnic Lao food is the spiciest in Asia!

I grew up with a Lao family and have been to Laos but I have NEVER seen Lao people eat purple sticky rice in my life, only white sticky rice.
Must have gotten some influence from Tai Lue/Hmong/Mien. Because we make purple sticky rice. It’s usually mixed with a dark wild rice.

It’s about the numbers buddy. Americans are not as familiar with Laos as they are saturated with shitty Thai food. Baby steps my friend. People use Lao & Thai to bridge that knowledge gap. 🤔
@@HwaiyR1 Even when Lao restaurants or businesses do exclusively use Lao terminology or names, you definitely still have idiot customers or "food reviewers" still giving credit of all Lao things to Thais. How can Lao people win? Seriously, the Lao restaurant could be called "Lan Xang" or "Luang Prabang," marketed as Lao (not Thai prefix) and dumbasses still call it Thai.
HiHai Lah dida , well you can’t fix the dumb ones. But we keep doing what we do and getn our name out there. Just keep focused on doing your own thing. My neighborhood didn’t know anything about Lao food and Lao people. But since I opened up my Lao Restaurant, they all know now.

Hope you have a chance to go try it out in DC! We only tried their coconut curry noodles and it was absolutely amazing 👏👍 Just be careful with the spiciness and be sure to ask about it if you can't eat spicy 😅

Did no one tell her about Laos food before her trying it?🤣 YES, it's spicy expect it.
You're eating it all wrong. The correct way is to get a spoon full of that Nam khao on to a piece of lettuce (like a wrap) then enjoy. The dish is normally not spicy but my guess is that you ate that fried pepper.

The chef should wear a hair net to prevent hair falling into the food. I wouldn't want to eat in the restaurant again if I see a strange of hair in the food.
