  • The Winged Scourge is the first of a series of health-related educational short films produced by the Disney studios and the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs for showing in Latin America. It was also the only one to use established Disney characters (the Seven Dwarfs).
    In this propaganda short, the viewers are taught about how mosquitoes can spread malaria. A young mosquito flies into a house and consumes the blood of an infected human. She then consumes the blood of a healthy human, transmitting the disease to him. It turns out that this is actually a film within a film and the Seven Dwarfs are watching it. The Dwarfs volunteer to get rid of the mosquito by destroying her breeding grounds and encouraging its natural predators.
    The short mentions the use of Paris green and motor oil to control the spread of malaria-borne mosquitoes, both of which are no longer recommended; Paris green was once used as a pigment and later an insecticide but has since been discontinued due to it being extremely poisonous.

    This is short film is of historical interest. But pouring gasoline, oil, and pesticides into water isn't exactly a bright idea. I do remember in the 1960's these methods were uses, and we paid for it with undrinkable water.

    I will do what I can to stop the mosquitoes from threatening anyone! Good thing I remembered that the mosquitoes need the water to give birth so to stop it from happening I'll have to dump the water! And this summer I am going to put on lots of bug spray! And if you want my opinion those mosquitoes are disgusting! But they're much worse than disgusting they are very dangerous parasites!❤

      Assuming this isn't a bot account- this short is 80ish years old, malaria is not a huge threat in the United States anymore. The CDC successfully eliminated malaria, and now days the vast majority of malaria cases in the US come from people who visit other parts of the world where malaria is common. Thankfully, we have medical treatments that prevent the spread of malaria.

    • @johanneabelsen1644
      @johanneabelsen1644 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, they CARRY dangerous parasites! The mosquito is only the host/carrier. It's the vira and micro organisms, that are bad: Dengue fever, Zika virus, etc.

      They use motor oil back in the 40s to killed mosquitos' larvae, until it was banned in the 60s, it' was toxic to environment. Now here today in 21st century, people use baby oil or vegetable oil to kill the larvae, make it safe in the environment.

      If frogs got malaria from eating mosquitos, they'd be extinct by now. Same with spiders catching them in their webs.
      It's the mosquito's bite that gets the disease into your blood. Once the insect hits the frog's digestive tract, it's done biting for good.
