Sure, Weiss is amazing, but the main thing I got from this short is WINTER IS REALLY FRICKING POWERFUL.

You still cant ignore the foreshadowing of this though. Winter will die or at least *should* die. Every character has had their motivation. Ruby her mother and Pyrrha, Blake her coming to grips with her being a faunus and also her parents, Yang her arm and Weiss should be Winters death.
+LeoFusion Weiss motivation was her father's dishonor to the family's name and company, as well as her personal grudge with the White Fang.

I think Ruby and gang is going to get in some boiling hot water and Qrow and Winter end up sacrificing themselves in order to save them.
I love how even Winter realizes the abuse that goes on in their household and is fully supportive of Weiss leaving and wants to make sure she's able to stand on her own before she leaves.
AnthonyH0395 this was actually way before she left for beacon in volume 1. She doesn't have the scar on her left eye
I know, but you can still tell that Winter is aware of the abuse that's in their household and probably left herself because of it. She obviously cares for Weiss dearly and wants her to be happy and healthy, which means Weiss leaving their father.

Weiss has usually been fighting in a controlled environment -- chainsaw dude was one of the first times she ever battled a REAL enemy that was trying to legit hurt/injure her. Here, she had Winter controlling the whole battle scenario, and she would be practicing inside the school with the guidance of teachers to stop things if necessary. She didn't have any real battle experience that forced her to use 100% of her ability (notice she used her time glyphs with chainsaw dude, an example of her needing to use all of her abilities) until that fight. So it caught her off guard. She's way too nimble to get her face grabbed like that by the enemy -- not unless she was unprepared.

This video comes in such sharp contrast to the yang short. It shows just how different the two sister relationships are, and neither are wrong. Yang fights a grim to protect her sister and tells Ruby "I will always be there for you". Meanwhile Winter produced grim to help her sister protect herself and tells her " I won't always be there to save you". One is a lot tougher form of love in truth given the situations each big sister faces I can see why each chose the method they did.
Yang's more like, "I'm your sis, it's my duty to protect you as my family so I always have your back" and Winter's all like, "you have to do better and be a strong independent woman. I'm not always here to protect you"
Too true. Yang and Ruby are mostly and have always been together with a short age gap so they always have each other's backs quite literally. The age gap between Weiss and Winter is much larger and with Winter working in the Atlas military she won't be around much to help her sister. She wants Weiss to able to defend herself.
Both scenarios are actually sweet. Yang and Ruby have each others back and fight and grow together.
Winter makes sure that they can her sister gets stronger enough to protect herself since she isn't there. So they're both strong in their own right.

Except Ruby was unarmed against a real threat.
Winter prepared with replicas, but abandoned Weiss to her father. When it came to the real threats, Winter left Weiss alone. And the damage is very evident in how Weiss interacts.
Yang took her sister out to teach her about fighting without weapons, yet was unwilling to leave her alone in the face of an actual threat.

I just realized something! According to the RWBY wiki Monty described Weiss has everything in life has been decided for her, which is why she is a bit of rebel. This is also shown in her physical appearance as she wears her ponytail to the side, breaking the symmetry with the rest of her outfit. However, here she is wearing her ponytail straight up. I assume this symbolizes how in this point of in her life she hadn't started to take control of her life yet? Anyone have anything to add to this?

She doesn't have her scar. This happened a long time before season 1. She isn't fighting as skillfully or confidently as we are used to seeing her, because she's not as skilled and confident.

See, that'd be a fair point if characters didn't randomly stop and stand in place during V4's crappy fights as well. RNJR vs Tyrian, Geist, Nuckelavee...need I say more? At least Qrow/Tyrian and the prologue fight were kickass and felt like Monty's work.

It makes no sense, Weiss' entire fighting style is centred around her glyphs, it's like saying "Sasuke is so bad because he abuses his Sharingan" or "Goku always uses Super Saiyan" it's an important part of their styles

Looking back on this trailer, I love how she fights. She adds a cute flair to her actions, which is something we never see her doing in present-day RWBY, where instead she is much more disciplined (e.g, always worrying about her form). In some ways this echoes her growth in combat prowess, but also shows what the song talks about: her family pressing out all of her individuality.
it's actually the other way around. that cute flair is her striving to perfect to appease her family. she starts doing that less and less as she warms up to the rest of the team, notice how she doesnt even really bring it up after the Emerald Forest and after Badge and the Burden.
I'm not sure I agree. What I was more referring to is, for example, her looking at her weapon at 1:32 the way a child looks at a cool toy, or at 2:00 when she finishes her flair with a cute pose and a smile on her face. To me, these seem more like what she naturally wanted to do rather than something she does for show. Rather, I think the Schnee family have always aimed to be more graceful (closer to the combat styles she regularly uses) than cute (what I would describe as what we see here).
But I understand those as subjective interpretations, and can respect it if you decide to deviate from my own
dont get me wrong i totally see we're your coming from, and i think it really depends on who you ask, but to me she looks a lot stiffer in terms of her movements, while the farther into the series you get, she starts to fight more, loosely? im not sure that's the right word but you get my point.
Having been in a sport-fencing club in college, I can say that Weiss' sword thrusts are good, at least. But she dances around too much. Throwing her sword into a single target with others coming at her wasn't the brightest move either. She's good, graceful, and not to be underestimated, don't get me wrong, but.....she's too showy. And she relies on her weapon too much as well.
I'm more with Brandon on this subject. This is the strongest point of her influence from her family, she is anywhere from her own. She has to become more efficient and less showy with modern day combat styles in order to survive. In her mind, being showy is being the perfectionist that she naturally is. But really, that perfectionist nature is exactly what causes Weiss to fail, and will keep bringing herself to failure until she realizes she comes to terms with the fact that she's not perfect and only human. That's why she is getting more efficient, for survival and so she does not fail as often. She keeps getting closer and closer to being better, it's why she's advanced in literally every other single way. It's all part of her growth, she's not getting further, but closer to where she wants to be in present day RWBY.

Weiss is my favourite character, but i feel like she never wins, she always loses in all Volumes, even though she tries so hard.
White Trailer: Get's a scar, only protagonist with a permanent wound from her introduction.
Volume 1: Doesn't becomes leader.
Volume 2: Defeated by the White Fang member with the Chainsaw on the Train.
Volume 3: Defeated in the tag battle of the Vytal Tournament.
Volume 4: Has her Heiress status removed.
Volume 5: Defeats the Grim but plane crashes anyway killing the pilot. And get's owned by Vernal.
Tragic. She never gives up, she always says that she will get better, but i think she is about to snap and that will be a central part of Volume 6 and Volume 7.
Vicente 810 i agree with you. I was like "why is she so miserable from the entire RWBY series?" and i felt so bad for her but yet she still does not give up, that's what makes me to love her more
because she comes from everything. each subsequent event has torn her down and brought her humility. to rebuild on that is reforging and she'll be better than even Winter
i hope we get to see her become stronger than she is now and go face-to-face with her father. i mean she's going back to Atlas again so she'll have to see her family again.
also Weiss is my favorite character and i just want to see her thrive in vol. 6 and on.

The theme to Weiss is that she is a perfectionist who has to come to terms with the fact that she is not perfect, subject to her own self-criticism, never good enough even for herself let alone others. And trust me, that struggle is real, but being aware of it helps immensely. She has to fail in order to understand she is only human.

A lot of people are making pretty unfair comparisons to Monty's animation. Look, people, the team learned from his work and from working WITH him what they could. Monty had a way of seeing motion and action in a way others didn't, he was unique. You can't expect it to be the same getting further and further away from the time of his death. So accept it or leave it, but quit complaining either way. Try critiquing without mentioning Monty.
That aside, an aspect everyone seems to be overlooking is that based on Winter's words, the location, Weiss' outfit and the fact she doesn't yet have a scar this takes place BEFORE the White Trailer. It would make sense that she's NOT as developed into the way of fighting we're used to.

I just realized, this takes place before Weiss goes to Beacon to begin with. It's not between volumes 3 and 4, it's before the white trailer. She doesn't have her scar yet. And I guess that was rather obvious because Blake and Yang's character shorts also contain flashbacks to before the trailers, but I saw this one first and I just didn't make the connection until now when I realized Weiss' scar was gone.

I REALLY like the way Weiss' character developed. She started off as an annoying, spoiled rich girl. One of the character stereotypes I hate most. But now she's become a lot more likeable and more complex.
Whilst I agree with your statement, I feel like they missed a lot of opportunities. They portray Weiss's relationship with her father as something really complicated, but so far, we've only seen a greedy and poor-excuse-of-a-father type of character.

I think that the reason they're withholding information is that that will come much later. Remember that this series will contain about 20 volumes in total, maybe more if people continue to watch. We're going to see these girls grow into adults. So, naturally, they can't spew too much information all at once. Otherwise, the rest of the story won't be as interesting. Things will get bland.

You're right. I guess I grossly misheard something at the panel.
I understand a lot of people didn't like Vol. 4 but I kind of liked it. After everything that happened in Vol. 3 I'm not surprised how Vol. 4 came out and was not disappointed at all. In a Interview Barb said that Monty had the whole story written out and finished with, so you or I can't say he was not apart Vol. 4 or the upcoming Vols. His vision is there and it's Rooster Teeth bring it to life the best they can. Vol. 4 was a very emotion and should be well praise for its build up in the next Vol. As for the fight scenes, I saw no differences because I was more interested in the character development and where the story was going. I don't believe RWBY lost her charm at all. Its just the beginning and it seems to only get better. I can't wait for the Vol. 5, as a writer myself I can only imagine the multi dictations this next Vol. may bring.

RT can fix a LOT of things. Of course we'll never get the unique touch that Monty gave to the show but they could do so much to fix the writing of the show. Also not kicking out people who actually know how to direct a fight scene would be something they can fix. The complainers aren't just whiny butts who only cared about Monty.

jwadd01 Um, the only thing fluid in Poser RWBY were the fight scenes. Everything else was rather choppy and amateurish. Volume 3 featured a somewhat awkward transition to partial Maya, and Volume 4 smoothened the transition. I think V5 will polish the battle scenes.
I just LOVE seeing how far the animation has come since the beginning. Weiss's eye movements, the wind and snow, THE GLOW OF THE FLAMES. GOD I CAN'T WAIT FOR OCTOBER! Bravo RWBY animators, Monty would be so proud.

Can't be helped, when it come's to choreography Monty was on a level of his own.
Compared to the trailers Monty animated the fight is rather slow. That being said still done well.
Not to mention the sudden acceleration from standing still to moving forwards within 10 milliseconds that seems to happen every 5 seconds.

Counterpoint; Her old fighting style was a product of her family pressuring her. It was taught, not earned, so it was not "hers". She much prefers summoning and her glyphs because those belong only to her and her alone, so her family can't touch them.

Considering the fight wasn't supposed to be flashy, this was brilliantly animated. The best parts were the signs of her inexperience, like when she started looking at her weapon with clear wonder, and by FAR the best was the look of genuine fear from when she got overwhelmed. Can't wait.
Also the fact that she tried incorporating dancing and flair into her fighting rather than focusing on her form and execution, which we're used to seeing her do.

When I first watched it I wondered why Winter pushed her so far, but on rewatch and with all the novice mistakes Weiss is making. It makes sense Winter would have to push her to the breaking point to make sure she started learning not to make mistakes like that.

She doesn't have her eye scar in this, so yes, this is before Volume 1.

She was right. V8 ending, she couldn't rescue Weiss in time.
Also, Yang was able to save Ruby while Winter failed to save Weiss, which again shows the older sister parallels, and the difference in the childhoods that Ruby and Weiss had.

She is dancing around like a posh princess, trying to look graceful and is ineffective. You can see her take a surprise glance at Myrtenaster when she uses fire dust, clearly impressed by it.

MysticMystery Actually their fighting style doesn't necessarily need to be of a dance. It's more of form and balance.
Their fighting style is very focused on speed and quick strikes from all distances.
However, this also means that she's very reliant on her weapon and physically frail, which is why she lost to an unnamed Faunus, Saxophone Guy and now these "Grimm" in the flashback, all foes who could either overpower or restrain her movements leaving her vulnerable.

Alvatore DiMarco true, but assuming Salem isn't the FINAL big bad, considering that we haven't seen how powerful she is, yet everybody who knows about her (Raven, Qrow, Ozpin, etc.) fears her, whoever comes after her surely meets that role. Also, on a side note, I wonder what happened to Glenda and team CFVY after the fall of beacon. I really hope we haven't seen the last of team CFVY.

i'd think it would be a bit weird for weiss to be a winter maiden when there is a character named winter
even so, it seems to cliche for each member of RWBY to receive maiden powers. Ruby has her silver eyes, so it makes me think each is going to get their own unique trump card and learn to use it.

This shows how far Weiss really came. Really looking forward what she'll be at next in V5.
To those saying the choreography looked uninteresting, just remember the enemies were meant to be a training exercise and this is Weiss from a time even earlier than before she fought the knight. Hell, the way she looked at her sword it might've been one of the first times she ever used the thing. If her fighting here managed to look more impressive than in the White trailer or later, I'd actually be more disappointed in that.
Might say more about Winter's power than anything. She can summon multiple Beowolves seemingly over and over again.
It's more so that it seems RT thinks that posing after every other blow mean that said blow suddenly possesses some gravity to it. Take a look at the White trailer and tell me that teaser *feels* as impact full, also, This might just be me, but Weiss killing those Beowolves by slashing them like her rapier has Crescent Rose's slashing power and weight behind it instead of stabbing them (like a rapier user should) kinda ticks me.
It WAS certainly better than most of what we saw last season. ...Though that's not saying as much as we would like.

I don't understand why people don't like the animation or cgi or whatever you call it this is the best looking style of this art period. Other cgi in cartoons and anime don't look anywhere as good as this.
It looks better than pretty much any CG anime, definitely, but it doesn't look as good as V2 or V3 looked. Realistic shadows don't really gel well with the RWBY art style.
lololol V2s animation was really bad when it wasn't a fight scene. I almost puked from how bad it was compared to today when I rewatched it. V3 was average.

Yes, the art style looks amazing. However, the _animation,_ aka how things move around, are complete trash compared to the first 3 volumes. They were fun and fast paced, now they're too slow and try to _look_ stylish instead of _being_ stylish.
I love how Weiss dances through her fight like a ballerina. My personal headcannon is that she had ballet lessons as a child, then found a way to incorporate it into her fighting style.
