When you said fairy class my instant thought was it wouldn't be much fun playing a character who just takes people back and forth across the river. But then dad jokes are part of my DNA now.
Geek Gamers, Zealous Zauoves is the book that introduces the Pixie class. It's one of my favorites of the newer material. It includes d66 new character traits which for me lent to more of mythological flavor for character backstories, such as the achilles esque trait. I used them for a campaign I ran for a middle schooler which combined for against titans and four against ragnorak into one giant explorable overworld campaign for him. Another house rule I do is roll d66 for a character trait and consult both w&a and ZZ and pick your preference (or if one rolls a negative trait you are stuck with both). ZZ also introduces group traits which your party can earn - with some flavor text that can narratively be connected to patrons and personas mentioned in other books.
@@GeekGamers01 I also run an after school rpg club for 8th graders and mainly use 4ad as the main system for them. Its group for storytelling purposes and I let their imaginations help build most of the storylines/set dressing for the rooms or puzzles. I secretly roll on the monster reaction table as a sort of GM oracle that lets me know the personality of the monsters and how I should roleplay them. In this way, I barely have to do any gm prep, however each game session becomes its own distinct "episode" and memorable. There is a way to play with the mechanics to convert 4ad for solo rpg play to, such as wanting to use for D&D. The formula I use is divide the D&D monster's HP by their 4AD equivalent's Level rounded up. So 4 D&D skeletons with 12 hp apiece turns into 4 L3 Skeletonal Minions with 4 HP apiece. And then I just put into minor miniature/movement rules. For lightrpg or playing with youth I usually find that for 4ad everything is YES unless it logically wouldn't make since, when it comes to moving around with minis or asking if X could be attempted with a roll. When rpging, I've incorperated a houserule which I call the Implosion Rule. When a hero roles a 1 on a defense roll, like an explosive, that hero must make an additional armor roll. If they fail that one as well, then they lose an additional life point. I've also converted some modules (Sunless Citadel for example) into randomized tables by looking at the each encounter and categorizing it into 4ADs categories: Empty, Search (Secret Door, Hidden Treasure, Clue), Special Event, Special Feature, Trap, Vermin, Minions, Boss/Weird Monster. That sort of archetypal blueprint key has been very helpful in taking rpg stuff that I own and using 4AD's lighter system for solorpging or creating content. I've also found that because of the simplistic/intuitive nature of the system, it is fairly easy to take characters from other rpgs or iterations of D&D and create new classes. One thing we might do this spring is play Phandelver from 5e but I will merge the campaign with the 4ad system playing with classes inspired by the 5e's Starterkit ones.
@@GeekGamers01 Random question on the topic of playing rpgs with children, what are your thoughts about the Hero Kids system? Have you played this with your daughter before?
The bestiary is in that same book for the cards they have all the stats there There's a nice lineup of four against darkness books coming out this year I play tested the pixie King book and it's really good Joseph Mills is one of the great riders they're a part of Eric and the go and the all father Andrea Sfiligoi Thank you for showing for again Stark Mr love you do And I love your channel I think I told you before you were the one that made me understand how to solo play osr games and others like such.
I love the 4AD system. However, I agree with your comment at 33.47, that it's a little frustrating to see references to other books in the 4AD series. I wish each book would list on the back which other books were essential for play and then have a list of "Referenced" books (or words to that effect), indicating that these other books are not essential for play but there's some cross-over. I think this would also help to remove a barrier for newcomers to the game. There's so much content for 4AD, which on the one hand is awesome for those of us who enjoy 4AD, but I can see it being overwhelming for newbies trying to work out where to start.
Thank you so much for these great reviews! Did you try adventure decks for this game? There are already six sets available (dungeons and outdoor missions) and more coming.
Glad you liked the vid. Not sure I’ve heard of that game. I’ve got a long list of games to investigate and I will add it to the list but can’t promise more than that
Ngl i had this thought that you'd run court of the pixie king with your kids the same manner you did last year. Alongside animalfolk they fey would be something kids enjoy. Also im thinking of finding those starter set boxes and rpg in a box for not only the system but the greebles it has as well. I wanna get 5e's starter kit even though i have the essentials kit which serves the same function. Aside from it and pathfinder 2e's beginner box what other starter box or rpg in a box would you recommend checking out?
Yes Court of Pixie Kings is on the kids list for sure tho I think some of the monsters might qualify as “scary.” As to a box-do you own Forbidden Lands?
I think that’s my favorite book of all those I own from this game. Suggestion noted... I don’t really do playthroughs on the channel but I do like the idea of revisiting 4AD in some way. Stay tuned... I’ve put it on my To Do list.

Sounds like you are doing so much with the system. That's great, and thanks for the ref to the pixie class book.

Love this game and all the creativity put into it. Thanks for continuing to bring us this content!
Ravagers of Ruin is great. Some of the best art in the entire series.
Very well done, love your videos.
'Four Against Darkness' would be a great band name.
What sorta genre would they play if you dont mind me asking?
@@rpgchronicler Dwarfpunk, of course! (don't think that's an actual genre of music, but it sounds appropriate) 😋
I would love to see more of these
