Thank you very much for this Video! I am a Turkish Guy from Germany. I have the M149, a friend of me the U87 AI. Both of them has a different charakteristik. As you said, the U87 AI sound much wider. At first listen you might think the U87 AI is better, but after listening several times I find the M149 better, especially at minute 2:46 / 2:54 when you turn the volume up very loud with professional headphones, the M149 voice sounds cleaner. The U87 AI seems clearer at first, but it‘s not clearer, it only makes the voice pitch sharper, but the sharpness, as you said, is a bit too sharp. Both of these have their raison to excist, but I find the M149 heartier, softer. It‘s make more fun to hear.
Strongly prefer the M149 against the U87 in this video. The U87’s upper mids just sound kind of sharp and harsh and overall sounds kind of boxy. The M149 sounds very smooth and natural. Also brings out that rich low end in your voice really well which could be a problem on some very deep voices, but it’s nothing you can’t EQ out and overall it’s just far smoother imo.
The 87AI & the original 87 just to be clear have a massive presence boost. They sound nasally on many singers and the sss ttt ch sounds or overly exaggerated and become annoying. I can pick that microphone out on a blind test unless processed to death to cover up the issues. Those sounds poke out of the mix like a boil.
I have both mics and this is kind of an unfair comparison for the M149. First thing first, you're using different preamps, so it's not apples to apples. Then most of the time you speak to the U87 on axis using a Pop Filter then switch to the M149 without a Pop Filter and out of axis (cause you don't want to pop). I'm sure the levels are also different or they may be something wrong about the polar pattern you're using on the M149, so you're not showing the real potential of the tube mic IMHO.
I agree. In my experience off camera I did prefer the M149 over the U87 when all the settings were the exact same. I used it and booked a Black Adam movie social media job! A great mic.
It depends on what you are trying to do. The Silver is a more natural capture, where as the U87 is going to be more modern coloration on the voice. I personally chose the SILVER over the U87ai.

You need to use the exact same setup for both mics. U87 with a avalon 737 was the go to vocal chain. Preamps make s difference.
