What comedy cannot be political? Takes two to tango and unless all the audience, either the speaker, the listener and message won’t all be on the same wavelength. For a "smart" guy Bill tosses off some dumb stuff sometimes. I'm an agnostic at the very least...so I have no stock in any religions, but "the Japanese believed in it and they did the Rape Of Nanking during WWII". Bill, Buddhism was not the main religion in Japan then. Shinto was the state religion and there were even efforts being made at the time to get rid of Buddhism's influence in their society.
