The whole not washing my hands/not combing my hair until I get revenge seems to me like a standard folk type of promise. I have heard such here in greece as well like "I won't cut my hair until.." so it made sense to me like that
5/5. Although it may be too much of a modern interpretation, could the not washing hands and hair not just mean that he was so concerned with avenging Baldr that he didn’t even take the time to take care of himself.
About dreams, my dreams are like fictional stories. I'd like to remember them completely and then write them down, but alas! I only remember tiny bits of a story and the general feeling of it. And after waking up completely, just the general air of my dream. This has been the way of my dreams as long as I can remember (50+ years now).
Mr. Jackson, I'm so glad I have found your channel! You're so generous with you knowledge. I appreciate it 👍 I really liked this form of video. Very easy for me to listen at work.
That was a fascinating video! It is definitely a different style but even the short quiz was helpful for thinking about how to evaluate texts about Norse myth.
Yep, really fun. I guess I’ve been well served by not partaking of the more popular Norse/Viking literature. For example, I had never even heard of Balder being associated with any number, so I assumed that statement was false.
Whoo! 100%! I like this video format from time to time. They are fun little nuggets. The video title made me giggle as well. Good job whoever recommended it!
Love the gameshow format! Only missed the first one, but I've always seen Breiðablik translated more as "broad-gleaming" (Simek uses "far-shining one"), though I can see a Dutch-angled "blik" as view/vista being valid. I would want Thor-rivia next, maybe followed by Odin-rrogatives.
I was at a "rendezvous" (fur trade/frontier reenactment) near a zoo once, and around the campfire that night the wolves from the zoo started howling. It's an awesome sound! Couldn't make them out on the video but glad you could hear them!
More Baldr-dash please! I began reading in Norse mythology and religion (past and present) several years ago and came across your channel during the pandemic shutdown, so this is a timely opportunity to test my judgement of the texts and themes in the literature. Didn't hear the wolves, though. Maybe next time.
This was a lot of fun and love you started off with my fave Asa Baldr, there's so little about him and glad to have things cleared up! Keep up the great work Game Show Host Crawford!
Thank you so much for posting such interesting content, especially when most information about it is sparse or incorrect. When you heard wolves in the distance, I hoped that perhaps the descendants of Geri and Freki were there with you. Finally, the incongruity of an American cowboy-type sharing this information is delightful. Thanks again.
I scored 5/5. The next quiz should be "Freydian analysis" the next a pune on Dane and denial #2 I assumed you meant the rune aesh, NOT that the Latin ligature "AE" is a rune itself
This was good, I would watch more videos in this format. Thanks for your channel. I only got to take 1 class at Pitt in Norse lit., as an elective but its a main interest over the years, and there's sooooo much bad information out there, some looking legitimate. This channel is a great wealth of dependable information that I appreciate greatly.
Cheers bruv if there's one I've learned from watching your videos is always be a skeptic with mythologies and others interpretations. It's helped me see past the whimsical side of things presented by some, and to see the the real lessons and wisdom presented by our ancestors. Not just in Norse, but in all the different mythologies around the world, even those odd monotheistic ones.
I enjoy learning about misconceptions that are taught by modern interpretations so I don't begin taking it as fact. For example if you try to learn about the different worlds of Norse myth they will always tell you that there are specifically nine realms and that the Bifrost connects to them and such. Everything has to follow a strict logic and ruleset in modern interpretations it seems to me.
I didn't really choose false or true on #1, because I couldn't even recall what Baldr's hall was named. As for #2 I'm going False - I know he has connotations to light and being "bright", but that doesn't make them those things. #3 - 9 Has a sort of holy connotation, but Baldr no. I would guess at best you could argue that connotation to 9 maybe with Heimdallr "being born from 9 mothers", but even thats a stretch/ #4 I missed that and forgot about Baldr's Drauma. I whiffed. #5 I really didn't choose, though it seemed odd but in such a way that I wouldn't really think of a modern interpretation - because why would you add no hair cutting or handwashing or that he started fighting the first day of his life. I'll definetly have to do more reading. I'm starting to try to learn ON so hopefully at some point I'll be able to actually read them originally.
I enjoyed this and I did really well, but then I am both very interested in reading good myth translations and in (purely for fun) the various forms of weird divination. So I completely recognized the wrong stuff from the latter websites and the right stuff from the good translations.
8:45 isn't it possible to be like swearing an oat? Like we say: I will not rest, until I do this. And not washing your hands for a long time is uncomfortable. It's like not eating. Weren't such oat popular in Medieval Europe?
I liked straight away because of the brilliant pun. In spite of great ignorance about Baldr, I guessed right on all counts. I figured if it was weird in a foreign-culture and oddly specific sort of way, it was probably original. (But, then, I am used to reading ancient literature; Sumerian and Akkadian literature is usually really weird and detailed in ways we wouldn't have made up if we were writing something like Gilgamesh today.)
Certainly wouldn't mind more in this format, it's a nice way to give bite-sized nuggets of info about Norse myth, and would be kind of fun to test my knowledge about broader myth rather than Baldr specifically. On another note... got any recommendations for hiking/camping/shooting spots around Pike's Peak? I moved to the Springs from Junction somewhat recently, and seems like there isn't so much usable public land.
The "never combed his hair" part reminds me of the Suebi, who I've heard it said had a tradition of not cutting your hair until you've killed your first man. Dunno if we even know that's true, and deffo not saying there's necessarily a connection, but it's interesting.
Hi Dr. Crawford, I was wondering if you've ever heard or seen the Old Norse language in Age of Mythology, or even the Norse playable civilization. Seems right up your alley and I'd love to see if it's accurate
lol, I was so thrown off with the second question! I was like, "wait, there's an æ rune in Old Norse? huh?" I had to grab my rune-list to double check XD! (and yes, I do have a list of runes, yes, I am a nerd, but I am a proud nerd!)
The part about Odin's son not washing his hands or combing his hair until Baldr's killer has been brought to the funeral pyre. I think this is either a cultural act taken by those seeking vengeance or it might be a personal one. But I think it does make sense, I think what he is doing is forsaking civility and a normal life until he has gotten vengeance. Like if a character said he would never take off his armour until he had vengeance, or that he would never play golf again until he had killed his fathers killer.
I did not think that I would enjoy this format...but I did. It was a short, fun, mini-vacation into Norse mythology.
90% of the budget went into developing the title.
Alright folks. Let's get the theories rolling, why did Jackson decide that specific dream sequence as example?! WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!
😂😂
He seems so cheerful. In this one. I hope he’s gettin on alright in the Colorado winter months.

Please! More quiz shows! Maybe every couple months?

And after waking up completely, just the general air of my dream. This has been the way of my dreams as long as I can remember (50+ years now).
I knew them all. Do you know what Odinn whispered in Balder's ear before he was burned on the pyre?
No one knows! Except Odin and Baldr, of course.
I know, but I’m not telling.😏
Please do more of these!
This video was so cool! It’s very fun trying to remember all the knowledge I’ve amassed (lots from this channel) in the form of tests. This was great!
The sudden pause and i just heard a wolf of othinn was amusing.
Baldr and saxo.
this was fun! i only got like 2 right...shame on me! to the corner with the eddas i go!
Actually, book reviews or reviews of other translations of the Eddas etc would be really cool as well 👍
Mr. Jackson, I'm so glad I have found your channel! You're so generous with you knowledge. I appreciate it 👍 I really liked this form of video. Very easy for me to listen at work.
Light-hearted and fun. I actually got a couple right! Always learning.
That was a fascinating video! It is definitely a different style but even the short quiz was helpful for thinking about how to evaluate texts about Norse myth.
I think most people would say that we're all weirdos here.
Yep, really fun. I guess I’ve been well served by not partaking of the more popular Norse/Viking literature. For example, I had never even heard of Balder being associated with any number, so I assumed that statement was false.
Got them all right! May you never cease to shine light on the murk.
Whoo! 100%!
I like this video format from time to time. They are fun little nuggets.

I literally made my family do this. Dinner time is kind of weird now.
Quizzes in college: Boo!
Quizzes with a professor on TH-cam: Yay!
Please do, continue with the quizzes.
I was at a "rendezvous" (fur trade/frontier reenactment) near a zoo once, and around the campfire that night the wolves from the zoo started howling. It's an awesome sound! Couldn't make them out on the video but glad you could hear them!
FANTASTIC! This was so fun. Also, I won!
I really enjoyed this video
While I don't know some of these, I absolutely love this kind of video :D
More Baldr-dash please! I began reading in Norse mythology and religion (past and present) several years ago and came across your channel during the pandemic shutdown, so this is a timely opportunity to test my judgement of the texts and themes in the literature. Didn't hear the wolves, though. Maybe next time.
Intertaining and informative. Please do more myth quizzes
I love this.
Fun video format - and how can I not love a video with the backside my my home mountain (Pikes Peak) and the wolves howling in the distance!
This was a lot of fun and love you started off with my fave Asa Baldr, there's so little about him and glad to have things cleared up! Keep up the great work Game Show Host Crawford!
Started out thinking this would be cheesy. Finished up liking the point and learning a thing or two.
This was fun! Thank you Dr. Jackson Crawford!
More quizzes.
They remind me of younger days, watching Icelandic born Magnus Magnusson hosting the British quiz show "Mastermind".
This is fun 😊 I also like your beard tremendously
That was fun! Great way to review. And gorgeous light in the background landscape.
Fun video! I guessed 100% but they were guesses informed by this channel as well as “The Poetic Edda” and “The Saga of the Volsungs” on audible.
Fun - yes please for more videos in this format!
I am a patron and did enjoy this very much.
This was highly entertaining! I highly appreciate the wordplay the title; good show to whomever came up with that! 😁
An interesting way to present the information, I liked it. "Hogwash", I laughed, hadn't heard that since I was a kid...
Great stuff! Yes, more of these please
Definitely loved this! :D
Please do more of these! I loved this!!
This was a fun and entertaining format for a test of my knowledge of the subject matter. Thank you for shaking things up.
I scored 5/5. The next quiz should be "Freydian analysis" the next a pune on Dane and denial
#2 I assumed you meant the rune aesh, NOT that the Latin ligature "AE" is a rune itself
Meir af þessu!
I really enjoyed it. Let’s have more!
This was fun! More would be appreciated!
3/5. Does that mean I don't get the dinette set?
This was great! Thank you for your time!
Very cool video!
Thank you👍👍
Looking forward to your Odinn or Odear! video
Yes, I'd enjoy more videos like this!
I genuinely felt so excited when I saw this! Thank you for your videos. I love these games!(even when I don't do exceptionally well) 😅
I loved this! Please do more!
I love this! And the name gave me a chuckle. :) Great stuff, and so shareable!

This video is great!! I'd love more of this!
How fun! I loved this.
More please and thanks!
5/5 and I like the speed goat on your collar!
I really enjoyed the video! Got most of them right at least. I would be happy to see more like this!
This was so fun, could we please have more. i would actually love a mobile game that is like this.

That was fun and a great way to learn
I very much enjoyed this format! A good way to kick my mind into gear, almost like a warmup.
Love it
really enjoy your content! would love to see you play god of war 2018 and god of war ragnarok on stream

Some how I got all 5 correct not knowing a thing nor ever hearing these names! Very fun but let's make the future ones harder
This was fun 😄
4/5 pleasantly surprised. 👍
Make this a new thing. Great vid!
Loved this.

Yes, like. I got two wrong and I want to do better next time! 😁
This was so much fun

Dr Crawford did you hear the news about that runestone in Norway has been found recently?
Yes! Gaming is a good way to reinforce learning.
I liked straight away because of the brilliant pun. In spite of great ignorance about Baldr, I guessed right on all counts. I figured if it was weird in a foreign-culture and oddly specific sort of way, it was probably original. 5 out of 5 … it helps that I have read your translation!
This is great! I only missed two
Hi Dr. Crawford, I was wondering if you've ever heard or seen the Old Norse language in Age of Mythology, or even the Norse playable civilization. Seems right up your alley and I'd love to see if it's accurate
Where can I learn more about Hothr? I had kind of forgotten they existed!
Lol, enjoyed it!
lol, I was so thrown off with the second question! I was like, "wait, there's an æ rune in Old Norse? huh?" I had to grab my rune-list to double check XD!
