The repetition is what makes this song such a disciplined song to play. Some off time lines combined with the structure have reminded me to keep it in my play through repetoire. Nice job!
We used to have a TV show called Dr. Madblood that showed horror films like the creature from the black lagoon and they used this song as the intro. Great cover, Thanks Troy!
@@TJH3113 I did the same to my 1972 Precision after seeing Beck Bogart Appice. I didn't like the way it sounded either until 1980 when I put an active EMG PJ set in. That fixed the volume drop when rolling up the volume for the J pickup, also when either is soloed they sound like they do in their respective basses.
Came to your channel throught your -fantastic- work with Rush's bass lines, and am now exploring the whole of your TH-cam work, with mucho gusto. This band I didn't know of (another thing I like about listening to your covers) remains me very much of Blue Oyster Cult. Another great bassist there. Thanks for all.
Dude! Awesome job! It's like you read my flippin' MIND - I'd been hoping you'd cover this one & of course, you ROCKED it outta the park! Sssssssssssweet!
blinddog1212 Thanks. I've got one song done and I need to start scrounging around for the next one. I'm not certain, but I think both songs you mentioned have a lot of flamenco stuff going on.
Why is it every time I decide to do a cool cover, it turns out you already did it?! LOL Just seeing this one. Nice job. Oddly enough, the J is the perfect tone!
So great you covered this - An old fave of mine! As usual, impeccable work. I play this all the time to annoy a guy in my acoustic act as he hates "hoary old 70's songs" . Thanks for all the work you put into these videos. Also - I am FINALLY going to see RUSH this tour ! ! ! My wife and I scored some tickets for Boston. And I finally got a connection to get my rests to Geddy some time this Summer.... I will faint if he actually uses them (Jazz or Ric) 142 days until Halloween.........
***** From a bass perspective, I think Closer To Home would be a more interesting choice, Although I like Into The Sun as well. From a more bluesy take, Time Machine would be good. Their cover of the old Joe Cocker tune Feelin Alright would be cool too.
Indrek92 Thanks. That's a good question but not one I could quickly and easily answer. It might be a good video topic at some point. In short, it depends on the song. Some songs, like King Henry's Madrigal and Bouree, are so complicated that I start from the first note of the song and work my way through in order. Other songs, like say Cold Fire, are not so difficult to play and have simpler arrangements, but have lots of small details throughout. On a song like that, I'd learn the basic parts and structure of the song and then go back and put in the details one by one. Sometimes, if a song is difficult to play, has lots of small details and a challenging arrangement, like Headlong Flight for instance, sometimes just listening to the song over and over, away from my bass, helps burn it into my memory. Beside listening to the bass, I'll focus on the the other instruments might be doing relative to the bass in order to pick up cues I might have missed by just focusing on the bass. Sometimes it's a combination of all of the above. I could go on but thanks for the idea.
Does he seem just a nano-fraction of a second late finishing those last 3 notes in the main ostinato? (the riff during all the verses)? The original was most likely played with a pick, which _can_ be a bit played a bit faster than fingerstyle aka plucking. I suggest playing it with three plucking fingers a la Billy Sheehan, who talks about this technique in a (most) excellent bass tutorial here on TH-cam: th-cam.com/video/CrKKl50JuQk/w-d-xo.html (section on 3-finger plucking runs from 19:25 until 26:23) Another possibility is to use an upstroke with one of the plucking fingers, although the tone is different and somewhat weaker due to striking the string with your fingernail. Or finally, you may just want to learn how to use a pick and add that to your tonal palette. Best of luck.
@@TJH3113 A mere suggestion from one hack to the hack brotherhood. I thought I was leaving a - let's say a _useful idea_ - for some kid who came along and wanted to play this line. I didn't think you would still read msgs from a 5 yo vid, much less answer one. Hence the 'he' and not 'you'. As far as my critique: well, you _are_ just a wee smidgie behind on that last note (of the 3) IMAO (IMHO only A=arrogant, or @$$h0£€) and I think that's due to a drawback of two-finger plucking. I've always used three for speed whenever necessary, but only because no one ever showed how to play properly. Imagine my delight when I came across that Sheehan vid and saw one of the greats playing just like me...only better, of course. Okay, MUCH better. I do hope you'll check out that tutorial, it's very interesting even if you never use the technique. Also, it's surprising how eloquent and knowledgeable Sheehan is.
