    Drop me a tip!
    ko-fi.com/theinnernerd
    Instructional time lapse video of the full build, painting and weathering of the 1/35 scale British LRDG Command Car by Tamiya in as shown by The Inner Nerd
    The first part of this video shows the use of Photo Etched parts and scratch building techniques to detail hydraulic pipes and electrical cables professionally and cheaply around both the cockpit and wheel bays. Locitite 406 CA superglue is used in this process combined with CA superglue accelerator/activator to join the two dissimilar materials. Evergreen polystyrene strips are used to simulate the hydraulics and electrical wires also
    The second part shows surface preparation techniques such as filling panel gaps and seams with Deluxe Materials Perfect Plastic Putty modelling filler/putty and sanding them smooth to get a seamless join between parts using a range of sand papers from 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000p dpi grit papers.
    Also Black Basing techniques are included in this section using Mr Hobby "Mr Surfacer 1000, 1200 & 1500 Finishing Surfacer" thinned with cellulose lacquer thinners to prime the surface ready for painting, sprayed through an airbrush using Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo Needle/Nozzle: 0.15mm with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar).
    The third part of the video demonstrates the BLACK-BASING technique used to achieve a pre-weathered look and surface texture replicating that of an aged and worn aircraft. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar).
    Also included in this section is the Engine Exhaust painting using Alclad 2 Lacquers (Airframe Aluminium, Aluminium, Steel, Jet Exhaust, Copper & Pale Burnt Metal) and Tamiya clear paints to create a burnt metal effect.
    3 layers of Tamiya X-22 Ts-13 clear gloss seal the decals in. This can be decanted and sprayed through an airbrush such as the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo or sprayed directly from the aerosol spray rattle can.
    Decals follow painting with the aid of Mr Hobby Mr Mark Setter & Softer products. These products allow the decal to form to the shapes and panel lines of the surface which you can see in the video.
    Next is the weathering of the model. This is started using Abteilung 502 & Winsor & Newton oil paints thinned with white spirit to a wash consistency. Then used as a panel line wash the oil is applied across the model to achieve a dirty, grimey & worn look. Further weathering including Unthinned Abteilung 502 Oil Paints to create streaking and water marks, along with AK Interactive weathering Pigments (Gun Metal, Russian Earth, Europe Earth, Medium Rust and Pigment Fixer, Worn Effects, Dark Streaking Grime Rainmark Effects) concludes weathering.
    The final part of the video explains the final assembly of small parts including landing gear, lights, antennas and canopy fitment as the model nears completion. All final assembly is completed with Loctite 406 CA superglue.

    This is the best treatment anyone has ever given Tamiya's LRDG on youtube, really first class video. Thanks for sharing your techniques, the white / yellow oil wash worked great for me.
    On mine, I ended up drilling out the solid headlight and putting a clear lense in, I scratch built the fuel can boxes on the running board and fitting the more detailed cans from Bronco's British Field Accessories kit. I put slings on the rifles and replaced some of the decals with custom made ones. I plan on putting the Lewis on a different mount and fitting a Vickers heavy mg on the pedestal.

    Such a good job, painting this kit - weathering is such a necessary part of making a model. I think that most are overdone, and I just love videos of model shows and all the jaw-dropping results of all that patient work. I can remember building this when it first became available, many years ago; weathering wasn't a thing I considered. It was the color of Gulden's mustard - a very eye-catching camouflage brownish yellow. It's the exact same kit, but the current standards for weathering make this one look very different(and MUCH better)! Thanks for sharing this.

    Have you considered upping your damage and weathering? Dented hoods and tailgates, bullet/shrapnel holes, bent bumpers and twisted grills. A vehicle/aircraft on its last legs would be absolutely INCREDIBLE.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes actually. I might have a go at a diorama or something with a worn out or burnt vehicle alongside some sort of armor kit. Not sure what yet but it will let me use limitless artistic license! thanks for the inspiration too!

  • @clintonr9804
    @clintonr9804 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You have exceptional skill and patience. Remarkable work.
    A suggestion for a video theme:
    Build a series of dioramas depicting an early WW2 vehicle, preferably Nazi, perhaps something like a Panzerspahwagen, at first like-new, as it would have appeared in review before Hitler in late '30's Berlin. Then -- age it, slowly, over time. Show it as it might have appeared, say, invading Poland, or France, worn but still proud. Then the same vehicle in the deserts of North Africa, even more scarred and damaged but still functional, only to be evacuated to Sicily or Italy, battered but defiant. Finally, show it broken and spent, thrown into the collapsing defense of the Fatherland.

    Only thought why it popped up is recent BBC series on SAS: Rogue Heroes and reading up on Long Range Desert Patrol Group. Having spent childhood on backside of Sahara Desert, there is one thing missing which might go into the diarama you hint at in a reply to a comment - the sand. Would some fine dried paving sand be correct scale to blow over the whole thing to get grains stuck in crevices? In real life, it's a thing that you just can't remove completely

    I'm assembling the tamiya SAS jeep and I believe is the same dessert paint scheme... the instructions call for a flat dark yellow, but you use buff as the main color.. Is the dark yellow too yellow?? I haven't painted mine yet.. trying to decide what looks best..

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool! I hope its going well so far. Yes using reference photos and a bit of imagination the dark yellow seemd to strong of colour so I used the buff instead. I think the more subtle tone looks more realistic and bleached compared to the instructed yellow.

    As a Kiwi I'm so glad to see your amazing work on this kit. Its a real stunner Mate! Sadly your timing with this build is quite appropriate with the recent passing of Norman Gedye, New Zealand's last surviving veteran of the LRDG. Who passed away on the 21st of December 2018 at the age of 98. And quite benefiting Norman, his coffin was transported away from his funeral on a 1942 Chevrolet in the colours of the LRDG.

      @@soneyliston7902 Well in sorry to hear that, I hope my future builds can be enough for you to return to the channel and subscribe once more. I admit the music was not my best choice on this one and will stay clear of this type for all new videos

    Great job on the model. I'm not too keen on the technokink porno music used in the first fourteen minutes of the vid, though.

    What about the figures?

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see myself as a figure painter and feel that the majority of my viewers are more interested in the vehicle and weathering processes I use rather than the figures. However I have saved the figure sprue for future use if people feel they want to see me work on them :) I need some practice first though before I release a video for people to rip to shreds...

    Great job but too tidy, the body needs scratches, dents, rust, a bent front bumper and a couple of bullets holes. Also at the back needs some improvisation and mess. Please, don't get me wrong, you did a great job but too by the book for me...

    • @brnesouthwest9915
      @brnesouthwest9915 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you done one? The bumper is shorter on the driver's side and has been altered, you had to be sharp to be see it but when the sprues were shown with their parts the bumper was an even length on both sides. Along with some serious scraping damage on the driver's front wing. To put a 7.92mm German bullet hole in the vehicle would require a heated darning needle to be pushed through the plastic and then moved around to increase the hole size any where from 2mm to 2.5mm if you're going to do it to scale, and the house will smell acrid for a bit. However I do agree with you and Shui Ki Cheung that if it was on an operation there would be plenty of fuel jerry cans and water jerry cans painted with a white cross them. Then there would be boxes of ammo, rat packs and Lewes's bombs.
