      I'm not clear about what body and lens combination you're using. If it's a Canon 250D, then it's a cropped sensor and that means the effective focal length of a 50mm lens on that body is close to the equivalent of being an 85mm on a full frame body.
      Perhaps you can clarify this as I'm sure you do not want to mislead people about the true effectiveness and performance of a 50mm lens.

    Exact same as me. I bought the 250d with the 18-55 kit lens. Then the 50mm 1.8. Its been great. I've only really used it for pics of the dog or the odd woodland shot 😂 but I'll try it for landscapes too. Great video again! U come across confident so no issues there. Forget the impostor syndrome. U belong infront of a camera if that's where life has led u to. And also behind a camera as ur shots are fantastic. 👍🏻

    A forest in the morning is indeed a beautiful feeling, especially with a camera. Be careful though, it’s only a matter of time before you start taking an interest in photographing the wildlife! I thought landscape photography was expensive and time consuming, Wildlife is a whole new ballgame, but so so rewarding!

    ENJOYING THIS VIDEO! I'm a Nikon camera guy, and I had a nifty fifty 1.8 lens on my camera until a few months ago, and it was lost. My camera tech guy didn't have any more 50mm but he did hava 55mm macro MANUAL focusing lens that he recommended. I wasn;t happy, but I got the lens; once I got used to the manual focusing, I fell in love wth it! I also have a 24-70mm zoom that I use every day, so I'm good to go...but the 50mm lenses are a MUST for photography! Thanks again for your tips...

    My personal thoughs to "talking to the camera":
    I personally find it more pleasing if people not always talk to the camera. Maybe because I don't like being stared at.
    I'd say not always talking to the camera is more natural.
    You always had a good mixture, and I find your videos very pleasing to watch. They match the topic - nature - they are calm. It's also your "style". In the past I lost interest on some channels, because they were trying to do things like "all other youtubers" and lost their distinction.

    Back in the day many photographers started out with a 50mm, and then manufacturers started putting cheap zooms in with the bodies. The 50mm has always been a great focal length, if used right. I have an old Pentax 50mm 1.4 manual focus lens that I paid $10 for a few years ago. I recently bought an adapter to mount it on my R5. It's a little more effort to use and get good focus, but still does a great job. I used it to take some portraits of my daughter last weekend and I was impressed with the sharpness on a few of them. Definitely a fun little lens, and it's the fastest lens I own.

    A very informative video Joshua, especially because I just purchased a Nikkor 35mm F1.8 Prime lens for my Nikon D500. Because my camera has a crop sensor body, my 35 mm equates to around a 52 mm focal length. It is going to take me a bit to get used to the prime lens, but in the long run I think it will make me a much better photographer! Thanks for all of your information Joshua. I have now viewed several of your videos and have liked them very much. Greetings from Oregon USA.

    Joshua I've only watched a couple of your videos so far but I do enjoy them. I am retired and I've just taken up photography as a hobby a few months ago. Up until recently the camera was merely a means to take pictures of family and friends. But now that I'm retired I've found that taking pictures just for fun is exactly that; fun. I guess I should get to the point of this comment. My daughter gave me a 35mm Yongnuo prime lens for Christmas to use with my Nikon D5100 camera. The lens has a 2.0 Apreture. I also have a couple of zoom lenses that give me focal lengths that run from 17mm to 200 mm. I've been told that a 35mm lens for a crop sensor camera is basically the same as a 50mm lens for a full frame camera. My question is, will the information I've received from this video work with my 35mm lens? I ask because I enjoy outdoor photography as well as astrophotography.

    Thanks for your entertaining videos. Very informative and inspiring! What i'm a bit confused about in this video, are you fond of this actual 50mm 1.8 lens in general regardless of which camera you use it with, or are you fond of the actual focal length equivalent of around 80mm (on 250d) this lens ultimately produces on a crop camera?

  • @ryanz486
    @ryanz486 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is the second video I've seen of yours, and gotta say I'm really enjoying them. Educational, helpful, relaxing and enjoyable to watch.
    Though I must say you've got me conflicted. I like the higher mp of the 90D (32mp I believe), all the controls on it, the SD card slot location and the 45-point auto focus...however seeing what you are able to do with the SL3 is impressive. SL3 where I live is around $450CDN cheaper than the 90D.
    Oh and like so many, the Nifty Fifty was my first lens purchase. Still use it most on my old T1i (500D).
    Are all the photos on your websites portfolio done with the SL3?

    Hi Joshua, thank you for the videos, I am still fairly new to photography and enjoy landscapes and chasing sunrises and sunsets, having watched (and thoroughly enjoyed) your videos, I can see you have your camera attached to your rucksack strap, what piece of kit do you use to attach your camera to your rucksack? I currently have a Canon M50 and I carry it using a wrist strap as I find with a neck strap everything bounces around too much, but with the ruck sack attachment I can see it keeps both hands free while walking. Plus anymore tips on kit you take on your walks would be appreciated (or have I not reached that particular video yet)?😁

    Interesting vid. I want to 'hike light' and, even though I have the nice 70-300mm (105-450mm equivalent) zoom, I fancy taking my 33mm (50mmm equivalent) instead. It's lighter and I'd just rather have the small chance of taking a great tailored pic on my random walks than be walking around with what feels like a miniature birdwatching lens.

It's what called 'short telephoto' range that is occupied by the portrait lenses mostly (85-100-135 on FF or 50-85-100 on crop). Technically you can use it as any other wider lens that allows you to step from the scene a little (or not so little) bit further, like not crossing the small river or bridge or road but then it should be closed well enough to become an alternative to the wide angle lens and sometimes even 11 or 16 is not enough for that lenses. Or, as you usually do with portrait lenses, you use it to separate the detail from the background, because 50mm is not enough to use it as real telephoto for animals and birds, so only flowers/bees/branches/leaves remain.
    Probably it can be used as a macro lens with some additions. But once again, 50 mm is not very good in that role as it's neither too telephoto to use close-up filters, nor too wide to use extension tubes. Real challenge as to me, that's why my typical crop setup is 10-18 and 55-250 and I rarely miss 18-55 range for landscape/architecture/tourism. And 18-55 becomes handy only for everything related to people like portraits, fashion, street photography.

    Cartier-Bresson used the 50mm for his street photography. I wondered if the choice was prompted by simple economics.

    How affordable are those 50mm lenses 1.8 or 2.8 i just have a kit lens 18-55 zoom?

    Please help me understand, as I'm a total beginner in photography. Tell me if I'm getting it right. So, the focal length of the lens is 50 mm, but since your camera APS-C it means the actual focal length is 80mm? And all the photos here are actually 80mm photos? Or I'm wrong?

    Is it a standard 50mm on your camara or it's equivalent to a 80mm?

    How do you like the Peak Design Capture clip? I'm currently trying to decide between one of those and the Slide Lite strap for carrying my D7100 with the 18-140mm kit lens. I am also wondering if the plate that comes with the clip fits your K&F tripod head without difficulty. Thanks for the helpful videos!

      I love it, wouldn't go anywhere without it. And yes, it works as a tripod plate absolutely fine 👍

    One of my first cameras was a Canon A1 a 35mm film camera which came with a 50mm F1.8 FD lens, and although I later bought telephoto and zoom lenses, it was always my preferred go to lens. It was very sharp in just about all f stops, in all, a very nice lens.
    I now shoot with micro 4/3 and use a Lumix 25mm F1.7 lens which is the crop factor equivalent of the 50mm full frame. Once again this focal length is as sharp as can be and is very versatile, I love it.

    Joshua, the pictures are fabulous! 💯
    I have a query. I purchased the 50mm f/1.8 STM for my Canon 600D. I read somewhere that because its a cropped sensor camera, 50mm focal length becomes 85mm f/1.8. Is this true that cropped sensor cameras cannot fully utilize the focal length?

    • @TheJoshuaPeg
      @TheJoshuaPeg  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is true. The sensor in a Canon crop camera is 1.6 times smaller, so makes standard focal lengths appear 1.6 times narrower

    It would be nice if Canon made a 50mm prime EF-S lens.

    • @carlosreyesf19

      Why would you need that? The EF 50 mm is very good, cheap, and light already 🤔

    Basically: the 50mm is not the best for landscape photography, BUT, its not bad
