  • Monthly Grocery Budget: $100.00
    Grocery shopping on a Dave Ramsey inspired zero-based budget can be tasty if it’s a budget grocery haul. This grocery haul for one is a monthly grocery haul on a budget. Made much easier by meal planning for one and grocery shopping on a budget. My secret to personal finance success is meal prep and budget grocery shopping.

    I noticed that chia seeds were sold in two different locations in my grocery store, one being the "health aisle", the other being the baking section. The seeds were SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper in the baking section, so might be something to check out!

      Well, the almonds in the baking aisle may tasted a little soapy one time. But that's okay for the price

    you do know that food banks regularly give out expired packaged/canned goods right? and "expired" produce isn't automatically gone bad or even stale especially flour or smthing. it's still good

      @latoyawilliams4578 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      soupleaf if it was still go then it wouldn’t have a use by date on it. I would never eat, keep or give away any expired foods.

    • @colinmcrae8134
      @colinmcrae8134 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@latoyawilliams4578 you have to differentiate between 'use by' and 'best before'. 'use by' should not be consumed after that date, best before only means that the company garantees a certain quality until that date but the produc won't be harmful immediately after expiration.

    • @beccaleigh7744
      @beccaleigh7744 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      They can use things after a "sell by" date, but not expiration dates. Donating expired goods is actually just giving off the chore of throwing those foods away. Public pantries dispose of nearly half of all food donations because people don't know how to differentiate between "best by/ sell by" and "expiration/ use by." That cake flour was still in date in my mind, but I also understand not feeding impoverished people food that you wouldn't consume yourself.

    The flour was still good. If you are neurotic about expiration dates, then I don't know why you couldn't pop it in the freezer until you're ready to make a cake. Maybe you should go through your pantry once every 3 months or so to take stock and see what you need to use before it goes bad if you are going to toss things out if they're expired. I used to be hung up about expiration dates too, until I learned they're created by the manufacturer to get you to toss things out and buy more of their products.

    • @areyes2828
      @areyes2828 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. When our kids first moved out we continued to buy the same amount of food well just about but threw out a lot at the end of the month because it became stale/old before we used it. I've since figured it out. A loaf of bread goes right into the freezer, I take out slices as I need to. Summer when can find baskets of blue berries for $2 and bananas at next to nothing they too go right in the freezer for my smoothies. I large pot of black beans are broken down into smaller servings along with steamed brown rice and placed in the freezer. Etc. etc. I cannot believe how much $ I have saved on my grocery bill.

    I took a lot of agriculture classes in college. Some of those best by items were not "expired." Companies are the ones that determine the sell by dates, not the government. Companies almost always pick a closer date than actual expiration in order to 1. sell more of the items sooner and 2. be on the absolute safe side. Bottled water even has a sell by date but it does not actually ever expire. You live and you learn, now you'll save more next in 2020 :)

      I definitely agree...and if yall want your flour, cornmeal, cereal, chips, rice, noodles, pasta, nuts, etc. to last longer...freeze it first for at least 48 hours...that way, no bugs...if you have the room in your freezer, you can just leave it in there until you need it... most of us don't have the extra room, but since I live alone, I do. But yes, using something that is only a month or two or even three over the date, is perfectly fine...I would do what you do, Stacy and then find a way to use them first, so you don't have to throw them out.💖🙏💖🎂🍰

      And actually dry foods hardly ever expire in the sense of going bad and making you sick... you can use dry or canned foods for many many years after the best before-date (exemption are foods that contain fat, like nuts...they can turn rancid of course). It's for a reason that the EU is discussing about getting rid of a best before date at all - it's crazy to through away foods just based on a random date... without using your brain, i.e. common sense.

    Hi Stacey!! Thanks for the video!! Since watching TH-cam cooking (Vegan) channels, I've recently learned a neat kitchen tip that you may or may not have seen: Save all of your vegetable scraps in a gallon size ziplock bag and store it in the freezer. Once the bag is full, put the frozen (or fresh) vegetable scraps in a pot with fresh water and cook which makes your own homemade vegetable stock! Season to taste and then strain. Pour the stock into ice trays and freeze. Once frozen, pop out the vegetable stock cubes and then store in the ziplock freezer bag in the freezer and use the cubes as needed for flavoring homemade dishes.

  • @tmcdgreen
    @tmcdgreen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Wow, I’m discouraged reading some of these comments. Please don’t donate expired food. As a former pregnancy center volunteer, it made me sick to my stomach how so many people could donate food they wouldn’t feed their families to new moms. How can you say you care for babies, but treat the mothers like they deserve only the crumbs? We threw *all* expired food away-regardless of how many days you could ‘technically’ add on to the end of the sell by date/use by date. Poor people don’t deserve less, and don’t suddenly become emotionless about the food just because they are hungry. Giving people expired food reinforces the idea that they are as worthless as the food you didn’t want.
    Poor people also don’t plan their lives around the 30 or so days that they can ‘technically’ eat the donated food other people didn’t want, and neither do the self-respecting volunteers who process donated food. Volunteers are the ones who have to throw out the food people don’t have the decency to put at the curb. I still remember the list of companies and people who donated items that we knew to throw in the trash immediately upon receipt. You *never* forget those folks.
    You don’t give a half eaten sandwich to a homeless person at an intersection. Donating expired food to food pantries is doing basically the same thing. If you’re privileged to waste enough food to have to donate it every year, please remember that wasted food is just that-wasted food. Donating it is not virtuous, especially if you believe people less fortunate than you should be satisfied with less than you. Be a better consumer, and treat others as you would yourself, your best self.

    I cringed when I saw you throw away good food. You could have eaten all the cake.
    I've done something a bit similar to you when it comes to food. I took inventory of everything I had in the fridge, freezer, and cupboards at the end of December. I made January a no-spend month, with the exception of bananas and milk because I use them often. Now that we're half way through the month, I can see that I won't be able to finish all the food already in the house. So looks this this will go beyond January. It's a great way to save money, cut down on food waste, and it forces me to be creative with my meals. Keep up the good work. I love watching your videos.

    Watching you throw out a whole thing of cake flour was painful. It doesn’t magically turn bad or know the date. Pasta and flour and most of those condiments are 100% safe to eat. The dates are just required to be there, it doesn’t mean it’s bad. Milk has a date on it too, but unless it’s sour, it’s not bad.

    I am glad to see that I wasn't the only person really upset by the wasting of perfectly good food. Prepackaged things are so full of preservatives that they can last well beyond their date, particularly if sealed. I personally would have eaten some of that myself, but if there was an item I was going to toss, I would most certainly donate it. Food banks can determine its usability particularly when it comes to starving people who won't care if the flavor of something isn't 100% as long as it is safe to eat.

All my life I was brought up on the whole, "oh, it's on sale! you should get it - you never know when..." and when I was out of work for 6 months I did a deep cleaning of every room in my house and the kitchen was the most disappointing. Buying things that are a dollar, but never get used, are dollars wasted. I vowed to never be that shopper again. Second most disappointing was the closet. There were clothes I purchased YEARS ago that still had tags on them - never again. Thanks for sharing and I know that hummus is gonna be yummy!!!

      Just seen your channel has cash envelop videos! I've been wanting to start doing it. Will be checking your channel out!
      I just cleaned my kitchen out and I threw so much out. So disappointed in myself. I always buy so much stuff just because it's on sale., need to stop doing that. It's so wasteful!

      Hannah Kayee welcome, love! Yes, do it! My channel keeps me accountable and mindful of purchases I make. And tell me about it!!! Where I am, the 99 cent store is like a heaven to a shopper! I’ll go in there specifically for something and come out with about 15-20 bucks worth of things. “Oh, THIS is such-and-such brand! Let me grab this and try it out!” and “try it out” never comes. 😔🤦🏾‍♀️ Now that I budget, I’ve gotten better with making my list and sticking to it so I don’t waste money or food.

      Ive been doing that too Dee. I have some things that I buy and keep on hand as regular items but I have been planning our dinners for at least three nights a week and buying only what is needed for the dishes. Have save me tons and I am accumulating less as well. I started cleaning out my pantry in January and found 3 cans of red salmon the expired 2 years ago...girl I could have made salmon croquettes for dinner one night...what a waste!

    Are you from KC or Chicago? Knowing you’re in the Midwest, I applaud your come up even more because I’m from KCMO. I see people being snippy about best by dates in the comments but I understand that when you grow up eating the cheapest food available which is often expired, when you get out of that you might place more emphasis on the quality of food you put into your body. I mean I’m sure if you had to, you’d eat it. I loved your response to another comment about donating only the quality of food that YOU would eat. I believe you’re spreading great messages and real life examples of how we can budget our groceries and use the excess money to attain our financial goals. Thank you for your work 💕

    Thank you for this, I know there's a few things in my pantry that I need to discard, I've just been too lazy to sort things out. As for storing spices in you ur cabinet drawer, get one of those large shower caddies that hangs on the neck of the pipe that comes out of the wall that becomes the shower head and hang it on your wall. That way you can see what spices you have and you don't have to waste valuable cabinet space.

    Looks great. I'm surprised you didn't get any salmon for at least a meal or two. I know how much you enjoyed it with the Home Chef recipes. I love salmon as well. Looking forward to seeing you cook some new recipes.
    BTW. The flour would have still been good and safe to use for several months after the date. Some expiration dates are really more of a guide to using something at its top best quality rather than a point that it goes bad.
    I would check expiration dates more often of the items not in regular use to give yourself time to plan using it before it gets old. Only a few dry items need replaced after dates like baking powder or yeast which could lose their chemical or living properties. Flour being inert if kept properly stored at correct temperatures, kept dry, and in air tight containers that prevent bugs that like to infiltrate flour from access, etc really does not usually become "bad" just because of the package date. .
    Just for future reference. I know it feels good to start the year with a freshly cleaned, stocked and organized pantry. Good job❣️ Love & Prayers

    I smile so big when I hear your income number now.
    I try to check my cabinet and fridge regularly for expired foods. Now that my girlfriend's mother has moved in with us, I realize that she hoards food...like she will buy something she "has a taste for" and then never eats it and I end up tossing it because it's expired. She gets mad but I'm not keeping expired foods in the house and I need her to be more mindful of what she buys.
    I love to watch your grocery hauls and see you prep the food. Please do a video when you make the hummus. I know it's super simple but I hear the taste of homemade hummus over store bought is like night and day.

    🎉 Happy New Year! 🎉 First, let me say congratulations on the increase in income! Lol I smiled when I saw that your food budget was up and practically cheered when you mentioned your income😀
    Stacey, you have definitely inspired me to focus on abundance rather than lack. I remember when you wanted to pay off a bill (medical, I believe) and felt you had to do it because you had the funds then. You realized that you were worried about not getting that much again and chose to focus on the possibility of you making more in the future. Now look at you!
    I truly see 2019 being a stellar year for you and I wish you the very best🍀

      Do not give expired food to pantries. That is not healthy for the families who consume the food. If you are going to give, give fresh foods and or pre-packaged foods that are as fresh as possible. That is what is best for people in need. Not food that is on or past it’s Best Buy date or expiration date.
      People insist that these dates mean nothing. People are wrong.
      The standard of healthy food is not what someone is willing to eat because they are starving, poor, or desperate.
      The standard is healthy, non-toxic, whole foods.
      When I give to pantries, shelters, and group homes I go to the grocery store and purchase fresh food and drop it off the same day so each man, woman, and child eats at the same quality that I eat. That’s what giving means to me.
      As someone who ate expired food from pantries, shelters, and group homes I am asking you to stop the habit of GIVING TRASH to people in need.
      The consequences we suffer can be prevented if people THINK before they give rather than give out of EMOTION.

      The Northern Illinois Food Bank will throw out anything past the package date. Donations of out-of-date food is at the discretion of the individual pantries. If they don't distribute the out-of-date food the donation only adds to their trash removal expenses. Please check the pantry's policy before donating questionable items. ❤

I've missed a few of your videos, so my apologies if you've already addressed this question: for the past several months, you've been saying your debt is approximately $200,000. • @StaceyFlowers

      It will decrease likely when I start paying my student loans. I paid of $5,748 last week so I could say my debt is $195,000 but my interest is very intense on my student loans so once I start paying on those then I'll be super precise. Great question!
