  • I'm testing out the Panasonic LUMIX G9 autofocus again. This time I'm investigating if locking your face when using face tracking help or not. Some interesting results.

I've just upgraded G9 to FW 2.4 and I made a quick video test, which was quite challenging, and I have to say, the 1st impression is: WOW. AF works like a charm. I will run few more tests shortly, but I'm already considering switching G9 from MF to AF-C for recording all my videos.
I also took few hundred photos while my 5 years old daughter couldn't stand still, and again, out of 500 photos I had only 2 out of focus.
I selected 1-Area with large square, and then I enabled Human / Animal Detection, and I also had Eye / Face Detection ON.
I could actually see the green box around my daughter's face, and the green cross lines never losing her nearest eye.
For the photos I was using Olympus PRO 12-40 mm at f2.8 or f4 if it was too bright, ISO 200, SS 1/1000s (I live i tropics so the daylight is very bright).
For the videos I used f4 to keep the randomly moving subject in focus.
please do the FW upgrade and see if you can agree with my 1st impressions, that G9 AF got so good that it actually is usable in videos now.

I just picked up the G9 today. Updated the firmware to 2.4 and the kit lens to 1.3. Did some tests, and....fricken WOW. I love it. I never thought I would say "Panasonic" and "reliable autofocus" in the same sentence. Yet, here we are. I am so thrilled.
At about 3:35, the sun was behind you which did not give the G9 much contrast to work with. As a result, I noticed there was more focus hunting in the background. Earlier when the sun was lighting the side of your face, I didn't see any focus hunting at all.

Hello. The 2.4 really makes the AF perform better. It's still contrast based autofocus bit much better. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

SHHHHHHH. This is a hidden secret of the G9. Nevertheless, a great demonstration of the G9's AF ability that is more realistic than other reviews online.

This is the common AF trick on newer Lumix cameras.. sadly it's hard to do when you or the subject goes out of the frame, every time you have to re-acquire it. If you want to film yourself far from the camera same problem.. and the camera still lacks of "AF Custom Settings (Video)" option in the menu for speed and sensitivity like on any other Lumix.. btw the new G9 2.4 firmware will bring also better AF from Lumix S5 in June (in theory).

50/60p and faster shutter speeds than usual also help, 24/25p are the worst for AF performance. The faster the shutter speed the better it seems to be able to judge edges. That doesnt fix pulsing in the background but should improve you being IN focus more. The sigma lenses seem to be the only real 'cure' for the pulsing.

nice test, but you/we should not overestimate the focus-nailing too much, the human eye is also constantly focussing between center and backgroud.
