Thank you 😊 My Patrons like to see the final drawing in the video because they can also look at the downloadable reference photo as well - I think it's helpful to have both available!
Very helpful tutorial...Brilliant Work🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I love your work because it is very detailed!👍👍👍👏👏and I can understand your journey of why's and how's👌💯 your classes are uplifting💞👌👌👌Thank You for being here Kristy Rebecca🙏👍
Yes, I totally agree! It's grainy and doesn't take many layers of pastel... But the smooth side is great for coloured pencil - there's not a lot of toned papers to choose from so it's a good option 😊
I’ve been a fairly competent artist using soft pastels but have been battling with pencils for a year now - this has to be the best informative tutorial I have come across; concise and easy to understand. I am so excited by this video I am joining your patreon ‘club’. So grateful for the time taken to upload this tutorial. 🙏🙏 Do you cover portraiture in coloured pencils on your patreon site, please?
I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial 😊 At the moment, I only have pastel portraits available but coloured pencil portraits is something I want to do in the future at some point!
Thank you 😊 I use a variety of coloured pencils but these ones are mainly Derwent Lightfast, Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran D'ache Luminance, and Derwent Drawing. The white pencil for highlights is the Derwent Drawing Chinese White PS: All the supplies I use are listed in the descriptions of each video so you can find them quicker next time 😊
It depends what you mean by "normal" paper! If you are wanting to use these techniques and get similar results with colorued pencil, you won't be able to achieve that on printer paper or most generic drawing papers (they don't have enough tooth, won't hold solvent, and won't allow as many layers as you need to get this kind of result) These are some of the papers I like to use with coloured pencil when I am using solvent to blend: Hot-pressed watercolour paper (Arches or Fabriano) Canson Mi Teintes pastel paper (not the touch/tex) Clairefontaine Pastelmat
You can use white transfer paper, or you can rub some white pan pastel on the back of your printed reference photo (or freehand sketch on a different piece of paper) and trace over the outline so the pastel from the back imprints onto the drawing surface 😊
Thank you 😊 The actual drawing process took 2-3 hours but that doesn't include choosing/editing reference photos, creating the outline, the filming/editing process etc 😊
It depends what your goals are and what your definition of "cheap" is! If you are concerned about the lightfastness and longevity of your work, then I would suggest buying professional grade supplies and maybe start with a smaller pack of 12 instead of buying a 150 pack of "cheap" pencils. You can learn to layer your colours to create the colour you need with a set of 12 good quality pencils instead of trying to make poor quality pencils work Professional quality pencils will give you completely different results and if you choose lightfast colours, they will not fade/discolour/yellow over time
I use Art Spectrum Odourless Solvent (it's an Australian brand) but most solvents that oil painters use will work fine (Gamsol, Mona Lisa Odorles Paint Thinner, Odourless mineral spirits, Zest It etc)
@@debbienixon4460 you could probably print onto this - the paper is thin/smooth enough and if you use a faded black outline, it should work I would actually recommend just using the transfer method. You can just print your reference photo on normal printer paper, turn it over, rub some Pan Pastel or graphite onto the back, then trace over the front of it.. so the pan pastel/graphite from the back will imprint onto your drawing paper You can also buy white transfer paper by Saral where you just slip this between your printed reference photo and your drawing paper and trace over it - same concept 😊 amzn.to/49nLV7j
I dont see anything useful for beginners here, you just blabber around as your video goes on swiftly... this is like a tutorial which doesnt actually teach you anything: look the dog? wanna do it? shows sketch a few ideas of how to make it and then boom its already done and looks perfect but you dont tell us how to do it unless we pay for your Patreon, given that it would teach us only if we pay but it might not even help in truth....
I'm sorry you feel that way, but I have a lot of tutorials that walk you through how to create the drawing (not every video has the same format, otherwise it will be boring) This video shows "Tips for beginners" not "full length tutorial for beginners" so unfortunately, this is one that is not "step by step" but if you watch a few of my other tutorials, you will come across some that show you the steps Keep in mind that the full length tutorials on my Patreon channel are real-time, slowed down versions where I explain every step of the way, and it takes many many hours to create each tutorial. It is a very small monthly subscription in comparison to an actual art class. I provide these free "tips" tutorials on TH-cam so I can help as many people as possible, but if I created every full length tutorial for free, I wouldn't be able to keep doing that for very long because I wouldn't be able to pay for a roof over my head, which would lead me to getting a full time job, and not uploading any videos at all 😊
I like how you put the finished drawing in the top right corner so you can track the progress and compare it to the final image. Nice work!
Thank you 😊

This one’s on my bucket list. Beautiful
Thank you 😊
That is a beautiful one.
Thank you 😊
You are aswm and your tips are great. Thanks and keep it up

Thank you so much! Very interesting tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
This paper is honestly disappointing for pastels but I’m glad to see it works much better for color pencils at least.

Hi Kirsty, super drawing, what coloured pencils did you use here please and which white for highlights? 😊

love that paper, it comes in so many great colours, just a shame its not lightfast, unless they have done something about that in the last few years
en.canson.com/pastel-colour/canson-mi-teintes it's actually archival/acid free etc (has all the info on their website) 😊
good to know because years ago it would fade horribly
Awesome video.💜 You have so much knowledge! Will the effect be much different using colored pencil (prismacolor) on pastelmat?
Thank you 😊
You can use Prismacolor on Pastelmat, but you may need a few more layers to get a smoother result!
Awesome tutorial!
Can u also suggest any alternatives for solvent?
There's a natural brand called Zest It that will be very similar 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt thank you:)
Could you do "Girl with a Pearl Earring" using pastel pencils, please. 😍
hi Kirsty can you make a tutorial that uses normal paper? I tried this piece of art but i didn't have the same paper.
It depends what you mean by "normal" paper!

How did you get that white outline

Hello, can i use metallic colour pencils for this
I've never tried them, so I'm not sure... the best way to find out is to try it yourself 😊
This is amazing! How long did this portrait take?
Thank you 😊
The actual drawing process took 2-3 hours but that doesn't include choosing/editing reference photos, creating the outline, the filming/editing process etc 😊
Will cheap colour pencil work on grey paper

Can you copy a print on this paper ?
Sorry, I'm not sure what you're asking?
Like can you print on this paper?
Or can you transfer your reference photo to this paper?
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt I have a printer and was wondering if I can copy or pdf on this ? I don’t free hand

Will the size of the paper always be 12 x 16 inches? I have the 9 x 12 inch but will pick up the larger size if necessary.
This one is actually 8" x 10"
I choose the paper size depending on what will look best for the artwork, so it changes quite a bit 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt The link is for the 12 x 16, thanks for clarifying.
