Hi! After watching your video I went looking for my box of insulators bought/found from roadsides, thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace (10 total). Excited to hear that Hemingray-42 is hard to find because I have that one! Also Brookfield and Armstrong's. None of my insulators have been cleaned, that's why I picked up your video to see how you did it - turned out great, beautiful color! Thank you for a very interesting video!
Thank you very much for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I had fun cleaning that up to see that beautiful antique green class. I love history and antiques, but I especially love the smaller stuff like this that was in everyday life, yet eople just took for granted or didn't even notice. These are one of those things that were everywhere and nobody noticed until they were gone. And then wondering what it saw through out its life. And obviously i know it's an inanimate object, but what did it see in it's reflections, what classic car engines vibrated It's glass over the decades. The conversations from people past, or anything that occurred near it. Also I know I overthink all these things, but I love history, it's just fun to think about the world long before our time. Sorry for the long reply, I hope everything came out excellent with yours. And don't forget they make excellent decoration on random shelves. They make great conversation pieces, just keep it high enough so the kids can't knock one over LOL.
@@richdiscoveries When I was a kid we would find them everywhere, not sure what ever happened to them. One in a while driving I will see an old abandoned pole with them on still. I'm going to start talking pics when I see.
No worries buddy. I don't do a whole lot of videos like this, but since I was doing this insulater I figured it would be the perfect time to mention your Channel. I found you through a shout-out from Stepside a while back and I really enjoy it. The more we can get each other's names out there, the more people that will be able to find what they like.
Sorry I missed this reply, but yes it was Stepside Adventures. I have been watching him for a while, great Channel with some great people. He's got a nice personality and is a pleasure to watch. With all the nonsense out there on these days, he is genuine. I really enjoy his finds and what he does
That is cool and it is a glass insulator you can Google how to clean it or TH-cam it there’s many different ways this is something I collect it’s like number two on my collecting list and I’m glad you shared it. You should check out the area there may be several more lying around until then. Later
I have been looking for one of these for quite some time and this is the first one I found. I see other people finding them and I finally got lucky!! There is a few at a local abandoned yard, but they are up on poles. I usually look around on the ground when I'm there, hoping to eventually find another one. Thank you for watching and commenting, I went over to check out your channel, you've got some interesting stuff as well.
I have a small collection of those, different sizes. Some are that color and some are clear. A few of mine have Hemingray on them. I cleaned with soap and water also. Found most of mine around stock tanks, a few at flea markets. Looks cool with the light in it!!
That's awesome, I have been looking for a while. And a flea market is not a bad idea, I need to go check one of those out soon, I just usually avoid them because I spend too much LOL We have a couple of large flea markets around here and I always buy so much stuff that I don't need but I have to have. I have heard of the Hemingray Apparently those are really old and quite collectible . Thank you for watching and commenting, I hope you're having a wonderful weekend
I love these things. I had a horrible ill fated job interview in Brooklyn (greenpoint) n found one of these on the sidewalk. It was heavy af but I snatched it up. It was the highlight of a bad day. I still have it. I forget the branding though. I believe Hemingray. It was already clean!
Hemingray was a popular company to make these. I think those are older and more collectible. Hey at least you found it and made a good day out of something bad. I stumbled across this one myself, definitely was a lucky find because I've been looking for one for a while Thank you for watching and commenting, hope you're having a great weekend
Yeah I'll put something in it to keep it lit up, t-lights not a bad idea, maybe I'll raise it a little so air can get in. And yes I like to laugh a lot, I'm always happy and in a good mood these days, life is finally good 😁. Keep smiling, hope you're having a wonderful weekend
Thank you, I have been looking for one of these for quite some time now. I spent a lot of time searching that old abandoned rail yard that I visit periodically and was not able to find any there, they were all broken or missing. Somebody must have dropped this, it had fresh scratches and chips, but it cleaned up nicely and I will add it to my collection.. thank you for watching and commenting my friend, hope you're having a great weekend
This one I pretty much just got lucky with. But when I go looking for old glass I find a lot of it around old abandoned buildings, hospitals and even that rail yard that I have frequented. I've also had a lot of luck with construction sites. When they're tearing down an old building or garage there's always some random glass that gets dug up, just got to look for the stuff that's not broken. Thank you for watching and commenting, I hope you are having a wonderful weekend
This thing is awesome, I've been looking for one for a while and finally found one. I spent a lot of time searching the old abandoned rail yard that I explore periodically but have not been able to find any there. This one I just got lucky with
I was on the former DL&W line from Scranton pa to Syracuse NY I found a Hemingray 40 glass insulator they were produced between 1910 to 1921! Over 100 years old!
That's awesome, these are getting harder to find but they are still out there. Also thank you for the info on it, always trying to learn more about the past
Thank you. I don't remember exactly what soap I used, but I did end up scrubbing it with soap and water, came out really nice. Now I have it on a window ledge, looks really nice in the sunlight
I use 420 Glass Cleaner, I usually place glass piece inside plastic Zip-Lock Bag fill it with 420 then let it sit overnight. No scrubbing required. 420 is also use on other glass pieces that I can mention on TH-cam Lol. But, ya it works great on Glass, easy and safe to use.
420, I didn't even think about that. That's not a bad idea. I used to use that myself on pipes. Now I usually end up breaking them long before they need to be cleaned LOL
RICH DISCOVERIES that’s awesome with all the facts you have on it you got a good eye for stuff like this when I drive in Lancaster California it’s like every home has something old imfront it’s crazy
@@richdiscoveries yeah I hear railroads are taking the poles down little by little. You can dig for em I guess...we have a lot of rail to trail bike paths so its public property
You probably shouldn’t use mineral containing water (tap water) to clean any historical glass object. 1. Mineral stains 2. Scratches Instead, as I tell everyone, use distilled water.
I didn't know that, but thank you for that. I'm usually finding and cleaning up some old random glass items, whether it be something like this or bottles or something similar. Thank you
Nice. It would make a sweet hanging light fixture! It looks so cool lit up. Just like those blue mason jars we used to put moonshi....I mean...um...er pickles in. Yea..that lol
Yes, pickles🤔lol I figure I'll do something with it but it's going to be lit up no matter what. Maybe just put on a Shelf with a small light in or behind it
Could have been. I do know the house on the corner right there had burnt down a few years back. It's sat boarded up and then was recently rebuilt. Maybe when they were gunning it throwing stuff out that might have been something that was in there? Maybe got dropped instead of making into the dumpster. Really not sure, but it's a really cool random find
Soak it in oxalic acid. Or get some bar keepers friend and a container of hot water and then dump the bar keepers friend in the water and leave it in there for 24 hours. And then all it will need is a light scrubbing
That method works great for insulators. I still have to clean like 70 bottles from my 1890s-1910s dump. I recommend soaking the bottles in bleach because it disinfects the bottles and loosens the dirt a lot so not much scrubbing is necessary.
@@mr.sniperrelichunts8418 okay cool, thank you again. Also I just went over to check out your Channel, I guess you do have some bottles, good stuff. I'll check out some videos later on see what you got
