Went in 88 and stayed for 6 weeks. Arrived to see Thornton there with Munga Barry. Thornton ended up getting malaria and not in good shape. Massive swell came in the middle of the night and washed under all the losmans. Munga was only one to go out in the morning to have a go. I'd travelled to far and thought I have to paddle out just to be in the water to watch the power of it all. Was on a 7"2 ..still remember paddle for the horizon with a massive set coming...Munga was inside and turned around and went it. Little fella had balls of steel. Barrels were so big a semi trailer could fit in. Thornton ended up getting carried out very sick next day looking real ordinary.
@@bjh2997 chee, I moved to Hawaii in '89... Munga was no stranger on the North Shore during the winter. Balls of steel, blowing minds at big, heavy Sunset

Ive never surfed Nias. I`m pretty sure some of you have? It`s such a perfect wave and is really intense at the drop and the barrel is sick. It obviously goes into deep water after the barrel. Is it totally worth it? Is it totally rewarding? Do you ever get sick of it or bored? Just asking and Iive on Kauai and we got barrels sick ones but nothing as perfect and ,,,,Does anyone understand what I mean? Mahalo, Kinda Wondering Creature, Kauai Boi
I've been and scored some incredible waves. However under usual circumstances it is often very crowded. There aren't really any other waves nearby, only one take off spot. When all of those accommodations along the beach are filled with surfers, spending all day staring at or surfing the wave and nothing really else to do, you can imagine it gets pretty pressure cooker. The locals are great, but the way the 🇧🇷 operate there is gross. The amount of people in this video is dream-like, but not the norm. Dunno if that helps. 🤷

why is no one surfing the wave to the right of this ?? at 1:59 you can see it grinding down the point no on eout ???
That wave is called indicator and it's super shallow,almost dry reef, very rarely surfed, hopefully the next swell someone will give it a try!
Nias seems to have changed shorter and steep take off ...earthquakes?

Naa it's not shorter,it's just the straight south swell makes it hollowed takeoff and shorter tube.
