One of the best War Movies made. 1953: the cast, crew and audience were all close enough to the real event that any sugar-coated story would've failed; this was the nearest to Nicholas Montserrat's book (which was more gruesome).
In fact, many of the actors were in the real war.
This was on my reading list from school in the late 1960s. One of the best British war films with actors who had been to war.
_"When you are very tired, even the moment of triumph seems though more than part of the same mad dream."_ Huh yeah, that ain't no joke.
I think it's bad dream. Not mad dream. Jack Hawkins. Great actor
