Improving the court experience for all: Inside the Young Adult List court

  • Whether you’re a victim or defendant, or are supporting people in either group, appearing in court can be a daunting experience.
    Originally a pilot programme in Porirua, the Young Adult List court was developed to help 18 to 25 year olds meaningfully participate and understand each stage of the court process.
    Normal court processes are changed to help everyone to feel safe and supported during court proceedings. Complex legal terms are replaced with plain language, judges speak directly to participants, and even courtroom layouts can be adjusted to ensure everyone can be seen, heard and understood.
    Community services including counselling and training courses are also available to ensure offenders have the opportunity to rehabilitate and grow.
