I'm 51 and TERRIFIED of snakes except the hognose! But i watch snake videos to educate myself about them so i know where to avoid them, learn their habits, etc. I live in Texas so we DO have venomous snakes around, but so far around my house I've seen those small black garter snakes. I'd rather have hognose snakes because at least they don't dart around!

@@monikag1323 snakes are wonderful :) it's nice you're educating yourself about them, because that's how you overcome your fears. garter snakes do no harm and they can actually make great pets!!! they're usually tame especially if you socialize them a lot and they can be quick but they really do no harm. small snakes like them and snakes like ball pythons have very small and gentle bites if they even do

I’m 68 and fascinated by snakes. But like a lot of people, I’m not confident when handling them by myself. Back in the 90’s I bought a beautiful baby corn snake. Hoping I could overcome my anxiety I tried handling her. She never actually bit me but would give me a warning hiss. I kept her for 2 years but as she got bigger and bigger I got even less confident with her. I returned her to the breeder, knowing that she could be rehomed to someone who was more confident than me. Back then there was very little ready advice. If only there was a Snake discovery channel then. If I was a few years younger I would happily go out and buy a Western Hognose. I love your channel, you are such ambassadors for reptiles. 🇬🇧

She’s never happy, and always hissing up a storm. It’s quite funny actually. You can just type ‘pissy’ and ‘exotics lair’ and it’ll bring up the video. You need to do a new video about all of your hognoses since this video is a little dated.
I don’t know if you actually read comments on videos. Plus you get thousands of comments on new videos. So you may never see this. But I thought it was worth a shot. Initially, I checked for the rattle of a rattle-snake, negative. It hissed and swelled its head. My first thought was 'Cobra'...in Wisconsin!?...nope. Lovely snakes you have! I have 3 westerns and an eastern hognose myself. My eastern is captive bred, and actually takes f/t mice with no problems. Every now and then I have to rub a bit of toad scent on his mouse to jump-start him eating, but most days he does unscented. He's about a year old now, and eats an unscented hopper mouse every 4-5 days. I'll probably move that to once a week when he's finished growing.

I had a hognose, as a kid. He was beautiful, and very placid, easy to handle. I found him in the back pasture, close to a spring, on our farm. He turned over to play dead (the only time he ever did, after that he was okay with me handling him), and vomited up a toad. So, I knew what he ate! My mother let me put toads in the freezer, for winter food. I kept him a couple of years, then took him back where I found him, and let him go. The only pet reptile I ever had. His colors were very vivid, really pretty snake. 💜

I didn't; I actually quite like the normal morph. My friend/roommate is considering a sand boa, so maybe he'll get an interesting morph. I've been enjoying learning about snakes; my girlfriend has had a black milk snake for some time and is thinking about getting a rainbow boa.

Emily, our family loves your show and we always look forward to the next post. We've seen you interact a lot with western hognoses and have been inspired ourselves to try a small family breeding project with them. Would you have any recommendations on some good genetics to start with for perhaps a 1/3 ratio setup so that we can have a nice variety? Thank you!

I found an Eastern yesterday morning, but it's coloration on top was dark and bland. The bottom however was a brilliant rose pinkish color. The top had bands on it, but they were harder to see because of it's more UNATTRACTIVE dark olive coloration. It did literally everything you talked about, including throwing up a blood sac as it was playing dead. It hissed EXTREMELY loudly and bluffed me, before it gave up, turned belly up opened it's mouth stuck out it's tongue, and went completely motionless. I flipped him over a couple of times and lol, he kept just going belly up again. Finally I just left him alone, stood about 10 feet from him, and waited for him to do the coast is clear thing hehe. It took about 7 or 8 minutes, but he finally scampered upon his way. And yes, he bluff struck at me, I'd say about 10 or so times, before he played dead. He was freaking hilarious! And gross. He made a mess all over himself when he played dead. Still hilarious tho. And before anyone on here wants to say something negative, NO I did not hurt him, Nor would I ever do that to a snake. And the only reason I messed with him alittle, is because hognose snakes are fairly rare and knowing what I know about them, I wanted to see if it was all true. Lmao, yes...Yes it is! They are such funny little snakes! This was in Southeast Missouri bythway, about 20 minutes from the Arkansas State line, and about 20 miles from Poplar Bluff Missouri.

@@SnakeDiscovery what happens when a Hognose snake ( western ) bites?

    • @MidnightHedgehog365

@@aubreysummers1729 The saliva of a Western Hognose Snake does not contain cytotoxins, neurotoxins or hemotoxins that are harmful to people. There has never been a death caused by a Western Hognose Snake bite. There are cases of Western Hognose Snakes bites causing mild allergic reaction, similar to a wasp or hornet sting.

Please do one of these videos on garter snakes! I'm getting one or more, and I want to know everything about them! Please please please teach us how to care for and breed garters! Mine, unfortunately, have to be wild caught because there are no breeders in my area, and they are completely native here, so I want to try to breed them to give a captive bred option!

    "They don't move very fast"
Someone didn't tell the Hognoses at Imperial Reptile and Exotics in Orlando. I'm looking into getting a hognose and visited them, and when I asked to see their hognoses they took one out to show. It kept trying to run off and explore the store and it was really quick.
