Sometimes all it takes is a realist with a PowerPoint. So many Americans, almost shouting with caffeinated excitement at you, while skipping over key details. Really the second lesson to be learnt here is tea > coffee.
Darren, thank you so much for this video! For me as a beginner it’s crucially important to understand and get all the figures right. This is the only video I found going in so much detail and is so clear. Best wishes to your business indeed
Great video Darren! A really thoughtful and concise explanation. It’s certainly answered all the questions I had coming into the video! I think I’ll be subscribing!
Genuine , yes very good explanations and informative video. I've imported aircraft parts from US before through Freight/Forwarders and it was an expensive nightmare twice. So done it before through trial and error but may have to do it again should learn my lesson because very expensive but this video is excellent and helpful ! Thanks.
Fantastic video. Well structured, easy to follow and full of useful information. I have watched a lot recently and this was by far my favourite. I have one(possibly silly) question. Once you have calculated duties & vat, how do you pay them assuming you are using a freight forwarder like world global?
Great vid. Do you have an update for this with Brexit? If I import to uk from China but limited company is in republic of ireland....do I still pay uk vat and customs?
Yes, if you caluculate all the taxes on everything we buy, our Overlords get a hefty chunk of everything imported and made in the UK. Add to this the tax you pay on your earnings to enable you to buy stuff then it gets pretty damn like daylight robbery......
The EORI number is not as long winded now from what I can see, I generated one the other day just using my Gov Gateway which took less than 5 minutes, and to my understanding this number never changes, you just use it indefinitely. I thought it was just a number allocated to you which ties you as an individual into the customs/VAT and so they can find you for any unpaid duties.
i went on Government website to apply for my EORI number & got the number immediately, like the second i clicked "submit" it was there on the screen in a green box :-) Happy days
I’m looking at starting a small business importing dumbells and other gym equipment from China, still very unsure as to how it works ordering from a Chinese supplier plus the costs etc, although this video was quite helpful
Just applied for an EORI number today. Actually, now HMRC have greatly simplified the application. They take most of your contact details via your National insurance, or UTR number. A few tick boxes regardiing VAT, no mention of goods or values (I think they rely on the forwarder to check packing lists/invoices). I was shown my number immediately on submitting. They state it might not be active for 5 working days though.
Hi thank you for time on this video, could you please explain how we will actually clear from the port? Can we clear the shipment without involving any agent?
Great Video . Do i have to Pay custom duty or vat for cosmetic items worth 100 GBP. Also , what is the minimum quantity or price for which custom is charged
Great video. So even though we are not VAT registered (below threshold) we still are charged the VAT for incoming products and cannot get reimbursed for them? I am confused as to what the difference would be being VAT registered, surely we don't pay VAT twice?
Thanks Shane, correct - before you are VAT registered you pay VAT on purchases but don't charge it on your selling price. When you become VAT registered you have to charge VAT on the selling price but can claim back the VAT you have paid. Here is a recent video where i cover VAT in more detail: th-cam.com/video/ViN-TeiWBiI/w-d-xo.html
Thanks so much for the video Darren. Very simple, to the point and precise. I was wondering in which order do the steps in the import process takes place. Do you contact the freight company before your supplier dispatch the goods? And after you register for an EORI? But in that case how would you know the container number for the EORI application? Anyone's got any ideas?
Great video Darren.....really helpful. I am just about to go my first import from China so this was spot on. One quesiton I have is that I am having goods sent to myself , not Amazon. So do you know if there is any difference in the form filling. Also I need to get them shipped from the port to myself, have you any experience on this ? As you made this video in 2018 how are you finding the importing so far ?? thanks. Chris.
Can you explain how the product is identified to be yours ? How does amazon control your sales ? Is there a barcode they give to each of your product ?
Awesome. That was extremely helpful. Folks I would really appreciate some advice regarding shipping costs as I am about to place my first order and getting all sorts of quotes. Based on your experience, if the total weight of my products is between 250 - 300 kg and I’m using air freight. Roughly speaking, what should I expect to pay excluding duties and tax? Between 1000 pounds and 1500 pounds or between 1500 and 2000? Or more? Many thanks.

Hi, thanks for the great video. If i have taken DDP (Door to Door) , do i still need to register for customs and pay duties/VAT ? I am based in Portugal but planning to sell in Amazon UK.
Hi Darren. I have watched many of your videos and I appreciate all you do. I am looking to expand my FBA products into Amz UK but the 'mystery' surrounding VAT fees at the time of shipment and Amazon deducting VAT from every order has stopped me in my tracks (even though we became VAT registered and got our EORI in 2020). Since this video was made in late 2018, is all the information in this video up to date with how things work now with shipping into the UK and VAT?
Great video. I have a question if the exchange rate is calculated on arrival, how you estimate your budget in advance.? Do you use an average exchange rate for the calculations?
Hi Darrn, thank you for the video! It is very informative. I am looking to import oranges to the UK from south africa and there is a standard import value charge of 63.3 euros/100kg. This is a hige cost and you did not mention anything about it. Could you please provide more information about this charge. Thanks

Jurij Timkov I believe Darren said in a previous video that the freight forwarder can pay it and charge you a handling fee. Correct me if I’m wrong please.
I applied for Amazon handmade and my company is outside of UK and EU. In Turkey. We produce our own handmade products. If I apply for VAT and EORI number without creating a company in UK for VAT filling , can I use an online simple accounting service to submit VAT? When I sell a custom product, we simply make it and sent like ETSY. Amazon is different. ETSY or instance gives us its own IOSS number. Amazon does not do that. Amazon does not do that VAT itself for handmade stores. That is really weird.
