ArtsyIslandGirl ....I love the content and topic of this video. As a US citizen trying to get a dual citizenship with Jamaica; hopefully this year, it is the Jamaican people, culture, their pride, the rich history, and the beautiful locations/attractions around the island that I love so much. I will never be Jamaican, but I can be the next best thing, a Jamaican citizen. I believe all expats and visitors of the island should support local island business (called mom and pop businesses here in the US) and the local economy as a whole, rather than franchised foreign businesses. I do this in the US and try to do the same in Jamaica as I believe it is my responsibility as a visitor to support the locals/local business. Yes, as you stated I believe the local people should be aware and recognize the impacts, but I also believe visitors should respect and support the local people and culture. Not take advantage of, or change it.

I would like to hear your own personal experience of the impact of expats on jamaica good or bad. As a visitor to jamaica with friends who are expats living on the island, the number one issue is housing which has become expensive. Secondly the variety of food available has improved and as much as expats complain about island time I have seen a slight improvement in services. Negatively expats don't always interact with the locals, some due to safety concerns.

People who move from wealthier countries call themselves 'expats'. People who move from poorer countries are called 'immigrants'. 🙂 Jamaican culture is hundreds of years old and very strong, so I'm not worried about it changing to please people who are moving in. Regarding housing, most countries like Jamaica are having a problem with this. There are not enough housing for everyone, so they are expensive. Nowadays few people want a starter home, most people seem to want luxury and that does not come cheap.
