They may have failed at what they were initially made for, but there were many other things they were able to do fairly well. Perhaps the Bluebell Railway would’ve saved one if they could’ve. It would’ve been nice to see one in the National Collection, wearing Marsh Umber and opposite Boxhill, but the class probably wasn’t significant enough for public preservation, at least not back then.
Maybe if Billington had went through the effort of making an original boiler design or reuse an existing from a successful class maybe the e2s could have been a bit better

The loco just needs a fan club big enough to fund it, as happened with Tornado, the new Atlantic and the new Clan. With the global interest in Thomas, raising the money could be surprisingly quick. TH-camr "Lawries Mechanical Marvels" managed to raise enough money to buy and save a diesel in one day!

Here are ALL the livery they were: LBSC days: no 100 was painted in photographic 103 and 104 were painted in Marsh umber brown And 101,102,105 , 106 , 107, 108 and 109 were painted in LBSC black Southern railway days: All the class were Southern railway black with green lining till the great depression when the lining was removed Eventually all the class was repainted in Oliver bullied is livery (this one at 0:40) British railway days: At the beginning the e2 were not repainted and they just put the BR numbers on top of the Southern one 102 was only one yo use" british railways " letering" After some time all the class was repainted in BR black 104 and 108 were the only ones to use the new 1956 logo (1:25 and 1:20)

😢What was horrible about them? I cant't think of anything but they could probably have done with a bit larger bunkers. They were the strongest 0-6-0Ts that the Southern had, no doubt why a pair went to Dover to shunt traffic on and off the train ferries. Maybe they should have been tried on the Folkestone Harbour branch. I was always pleased to see one and anyway, I considered them to have "style".

The I2s were purely passenger engines and therefore needed a constant adequate supply of steam for such work. This was not necessary for the E2 since their work generally only required an intermittent steam supply. It was because of this requirement for shunting engines that, for example, the boiler fitted to Maunsell's Z class was based on the Brighton's C3 design with its small grate area for such a large engine. The boiler given to the E2s was perfectly adequate and I cannot understand why you consider the fitting of alternatives. The E1 boiler was an all-round smaller one and those fitted to the radial tanks mostly had the same length as the E2s and leaving aside Stroudley's West Brighton, the E3s and E4s had virtually the same grate area as the E2s and the later E5s and E6s were only a couple of square feet bigger. You mention "blinding" and I assume that you mean that the middle coupled wheels could be flangeless, presumably with a lengthened wheelbase. A moment's consideration of such an idea should give rise to the thought that this would restrict the radius of curves that the engines could traverse, a not unimportant asset in a shunting engine; curves in yards were not laid to main-line standards of curvature. I am at a loss as understand why the fitting of different cylinders would affect an engine's riding. This is down to balancing and weight distribution.
