Thank you for explaining about body weight movements I learn that recovery and sleep is the key for me when it comes to going CF classes I have an old back injury doing deadlifts I made sure from now on I have the app to track on my progression weights on btwb. All the exercises you explained especially with conditioning body weight movements help with progressively.
I wish CF class told me to start from the beginning I recall being overwhelmed my first week of classes. I’m 5 months in I have a whole different perspective make the body weight workouts super challenging but works for me. Being healthy and fit is a lifestyle something I truly love and enjoy especially with CF.

Hi Jason, thank you so much for this video. I have just got back into fitness aged 36 and I went all in with weights and I found myself watching a 21 year old for advice and inspiration. She’s great but I’m old enough to be her mum! 😂 Plus, she’s already been working out solidly for 3 years. But I still went straight in with weights and working out 5 times a week. (I’m all or nothing too!) I’ve ended up twinging my shoulder and I’ve just felt exhausted. Now having watched your video, I’m going to take a few days to a week off and start again with less days and body weight. Rome was not built in a day, right! Thank you so much for this video. I feel newly inspired and I will be checking out your other videos. 🙏

Just found this channel. I've done x-fit since 2014 off and on. got really strong but still was chunky AF, Now in my advanced age of 46 years old and retired it has been challenging to get back into the habit of getting back to the gym. It has been tough to fight through mobility issues and recovery. This has been the major issue I have encountered the past few years trying to restart my healthy fitness and skinny jeans quest. Some great advice

I have been on and off with CrossFit over the years and I was very similar, I threw myself in fully and wrecked myself doing it, my head was also definitely not in it at the time. Thanks bro, 🇲🇾 subscriber here, i was born in 1989, i'm 5ft 10 in, and i'm quite relatively young in this crossfit sport. I never join sport in my younger life, so i decided to join this crossfit and see how it goes. After a year, i suddenly got wrist pain, joint problem, and shin split. Due to the fact that the WOD is very intense, my muscles overwork and mostly i'm tired. I'm sure you've been there as well. After that i learnt about Nutrition, getting enough sleep one of the main component to be perform better and consistent in Crossfit sport.
Apart from that, i look into various resources to learn more about technique, and i realized that with my height so tall and i got difficulty in weightlifting. So i learn to change the technique. I learnt that tall people need to train twice as harder than shorter people. I subscribed your channel because you inspire me to believe in ourselves that we can do it. With your age above 40, really inspire and motivate me to work harder.
I look back at when i started my crossfit journey, i just signed up crossfit member without thinking twice of the potential injury, now its like a journey to self discovery. Moreover, i keep learning more about the technique, nutrition, muscle anatomy, doing recovery, its so many i can't list out of them 😂. The more i read and learnt, the more i dont know about it and i just keep continue to learn. Its very intimidating and i like to explore and keep breaking my limits.
I really valued my knowledge, my investment, and my time in doing crossfit and i will keep doing it. I believe i can reach my ultimate peak of fitness in near future.
Please continue to make content, please dont stop to share your story, insight, we need genuine people like you to inspire us!

Watching your channel as a 40yr old 5'8 male myself with similar overweight story has really help push my fitness and health goals incredibly. THANK YOU! I do have one question (of course lol). I've come down from 225 to 200 hundred snd my goal is to eventually come down to 180 with a crossfit type fitness plan. How many calories would you estimate you eat daily? I was 5'8 and 225 lbs of fat in 2019. During COVID I ate and drank way less and managed to lose about 75 lbs, now I'm looking way trimmer at 39 years old, but realized that I had absolutely no muscle mass. I bought a pull-up bar for my apartment back in October and have gone from cheating out 2 pull-ups (not properly resetting back to a full hang) to 5 more or less proper form. I've still got a long way to go, and I definitely need to be incorporating more cardio, a greater variety of exercises (especially lower body) and eating better, but it's nice to see some numeric gains even if I don't see the transformation in my body quite yet. Hopefully by the time summer rolls around, I'll be drinking less and eating slightly better, plus biking and continued progress in my work outs will have me at the best shape of my life by the time I turn 40.

Great video and very practical. I turn 46 next week and this motivates me to be more consistent in my activity. I already swim between 1.5 to 2 miles twice a week, but I feel like I need to supplement that with more cardio, like biking. I'm hoping to take your tips about setting small habits and working towards at least getting 5 days of cardio a week (3 biking and 2 swimming; I HATE running). Honestly, my biggest struggle is going to be getting my nutrition dialed in. That's what got me where I am. Maybe if I can start building small habits in that area, I can be more successful.
    Thanks for the video!

Crossed my first continuous year of doing it 3 times every week (I've started it earlier, but the pandemic ruined my progress a bit), going up to 4 times as you've suggested in the last Q&A.
Even though I've learned some barbell exercises, I've put them aside and rather use kettlebells (those feel like home to me learning kb earlier), I don't feel dexterous enough for Olympic weightlifting routines, can't enjoy those yet, but probably I should give them another go in the long run. Another thing I still don't like doing is box jumps, I always feel like it's just injury waiting to happen; very easy to get so fatigued to miss a jump and crash yourself. It didn't happen so far, I've just hurt my feet here and there, but I still don't feel confident doing those, I lean towards replacing them with something else.
Besides these, I really enjoy doing CrossFit so far, I've lost around 40 pounds and it was a good choice to replace a regular gym with it. Even if I swap some of those disliked exercises it can be a hell of a work to get through a wod if I give in everything I can. And scaling up is always a thing to push further. :)

I'm 41 and wanting to get back into shape. I signed up for the gym yesterday and only did cardio for 25 minutes. The reason being, I always go way too hard when I get back into working out and end up hurting myself, resulting in not being able to workout. Anyways, it's nice to see this confirmation that "just getting back into it" in any shape or form, is the way to go. I'm currently 225 and my weight class, according to BJJ coaches in the recent past, said I would be a 155 pounder. lol. I have ways to go. Obviously 155 is a weight cut scenario so Ideally I think I want to shoot for 175 walking. Here's to the long ass journey to drop 50!!!!

First of all, Jason you are a hero to the CF Masters community. Thank you for sharing your amazing story. As a newly minted 50 year old who still feels 35 mentally, do you think it’s possible to gain muscle and get significantly stronger into your 50’s? I am 5 months into full time CrossFit but had been lifting, running, doing tons of push-ups, pull ups, and sit ups prior to starting CF. I started my fitness journey at 44 and managed to go from 152lbs to 160lbs now. But realistically, even though I can occasionally do a Men’s Rx workout and compete most body weight Metcons, I feel like I need to be at least 10 lbs heavier to be strong enough to do this at a high level. What are your thoughts about that?
    Thanks - Patrick

Excellent! You ticked off all the boxes that have helped me.
51 years old, 167 lbs, been surfing since my teens but not in the best shape. Surfing is great but not regular enough.
Started w/ walking on a regular basis. Stopped drinking 1-2 beers every day. Cut out soft drinks, table sugar, etc. and added more lean protein and healthy fats. Added 2 more days to strength training from only 1. Currently laying a foundation of cardio conditioning w/ sprints on the beach and brisk walking. I basically said to myself, what can I do today to add to my health and fitness? What can I do that I'm not doing even if it is very small.

I’m 46 and finally in the best shape and still progressing. I’ve done running, calisthenics, powerlifting, CrossFit… IF, low carb, high carb, blah blah bla-- listen. Mix it up. Be consistent daily. Get your cardio and work capacity up, eat moderately and don’t punish yourself. Push yourself harder than you ever have before on some days and dial it back the next day. Be consistent daily. Clean your house and do projects before or after working out or running or whatever you’re doing that day. Be consistent. Don’t ever take a full rest day. Your life will toss you enough days that will force it- so don’t schedule it. Be consistent daily like brushing your teeth. If all you can do is ten minutes.. then do ten minutes and go hard. Make it count. But do something everyday. Be consistent and patient and do it for physical and mental health. The aesthetics well come but shouldn’t be the top goal- it can lead to body dysmenorrhea and self loathing. Focus on performance, how you feel in your own skin and pushing yourself when it’s wise to do so. I currently follow these principles and find that I’m progressing faster than when I took off days, pursued aesthetics and strength only.

Ha! My first visit to a CrossFit gym with an instructor led session and we did barbell squats and hangcleans with overhead press! Two things that you recommend not to do right away. We also did the reverse handstand wall crawls. I though they were all fun and difficult and I went back the 2nd day. Despite my leg muscles being super sore I thought surely it won’t be another leg day. Wrong. Lots of leg workouts like the one-leg scissor squat (not sure that’s what it’s called), and burpees followed by medicine ball lunges.

I wake up sore most days. But not in pain. Somebody pains are normal… But they can also be a result of improper form or technique. Do you have a coach they can take a look at your movement? Or would you consider a fairly inexpensive program to master bodyweight movements before you move heavier weights?

Sharp rib pain is likely a pulled intercostal muscle. It sucks, since your rib cage expands with each breath.

Strange. The first Crossfit gym I joined wouldn’t let me join any class until I went through a few starter class and show that I was comfortable with the movements

Fitness needs to be a lifestyle not a fad. The number one obstacle to fitness is mental so that's why it's important to make it rewarding and fun! Cross training in my opinion is important. Any training program that is regimented will lead to burnout. I observed a crossfit class and was shocked at the extreme jerky movements. If you want to be an elite lifter then it's one way to go but not for the average person wanting to get into shape. I do hit the gym at least three times a week but also mountain bike, disk golf and ill push mow the yard instead of using the riding lawn mower. All for training! But most importantly is you diet. No junk food. Keep your meals light and more often. All the traing in the world won't make up for a poor diet.

100% agree with the foundation of good sleep and nutrition! No way around it.
Sorry you had a bad experience watching a CrossFit class. A good gym with exceptional coaches will keep people very safe. As a fitness modality, CrossFit is very safe - but there are bad examples out there in just about every sport or fitness program unfortunately.

Your first point is the number 1 reason so many fitness enthusiasts absolutely hate CrossFit. Olympic lifts are very technical movements for a human to perform correctly and it's widely accepted to throw complete noobies into a class for the first time and have them do exorbitant amounts of reps with a technical movement under load. Your asking for so much unnecessary trouble.
