  • "Ederlezi" is a popular traditional folk song of the Romani people in the Balkans.
Ederlezi is the Romani name for the Bulgarian, Macedonian and Serbian Feast of Saint George.
The song originally got its name from Ederlezi, which is a festival celebrating the return of Springtime, especially by the Romani people of the Balkans, and elsewhere around the world.
Ederlezi is the Romani name for the Feast of Saint George. It is celebrated on 6 May [O.S. 23 April] (occurring approximately 40 days after the Spring Equinox). The various Balkan spellings (Herdeljez, Erdelezi) are variants of the Turkish Hıdırellez, a holiday signalling the beginning of Spring, (Đurđevdan) occurring on the same day.
The first version of Ederlezi - (Goran Bregović, Emir Kusturica); that I ever heard was from the soundtrack of the exquisite film: "Time of the Gypsies" by Emir Kusturica "Le temps des Gitans / Kuduz Dom za vešanje", with music by - Goran Bregović. I felt an instant affinity with this song decades ago; and was even brought to tears the first time I heard this haunting song...only to find out recently; that I have Romanian and other European ancestry.
    Thank YOU Ancestors!
