  • England, under the volatile Tudor dynasty, was a thriving home for the arts. An international community of artists and merchants, many of them religious refugees, navigated the high-stakes demands of royal patrons, including England’s first two reigning queens. Against the backdrop of shifting political relationships with mainland Europe, Tudor artistic patronage legitimized, promoted, and stabilized a series of tumultuous reigns, from Henry VII’s seizure of the throne in 1485 to the death of his granddaughter Elizabeth I in 1603. The Tudor courts were truly cosmopolitan, boasting the work of Florentine sculptors, German painters, Flemish weavers, and Europe’s best armorers, goldsmiths, and printers, while also contributing to the emergence of a distinctly English style.
Join Elizabeth Cleland, Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, and Adam Eaker, Associate Curator in the Department of European Paintings, to explore The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England, which traces the transformation of the arts in Tudor England through more than 100 objects-including iconic portraits, spectacular tapestries, manuscripts, sculpture, and armor-from both The Met collection and international lenders.

As a Brit, I grew up seeing many of those iconic paintings of Tudor royals reproduced in sets of encyclopedias, and have seen a couple of them in real life since. To see them all together will be a remarkable experience for anyone lucky enough to be able to visit this exhibition. What a coup by the Met!

GET TO NEW YORK TO SEE THIS EXHIBIT! It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. The armor! The Holbeins! The tapestries! The illuminated manuscripts! The clothing! The jewels! Even a baby's rattle and other everyday paraphernalia. The Tudors really come alive.

I had the honor of attending this exhibit last Tuesday. It was indeed magnificent. The filter of "Inventing a Dynasty" was an excellent way to focus the curation of the objects and that theme was consistent throughout the galleries. I was a better-informed art patron when I reluctantly left the museum.

To witness a Holbein in person is a treasure in itself. The man was a genius and it’s just so sad he died so young and that artists back then were treated like laborers on the royal payroll .

it's completely insane how they were able to draw and paint like this back then, i can't fathom having the ability to create this level of artwork, but 400, 500, 600 years ago!? it's incomprehensible. i saw this in person in new york last year

"Suddenly" the King turned on Wolsey? Oh, come on. Even the most casual history buff knows that Henry VIII dumped Wolsey *because Wolsey couldn't get the Pope to annul his first marriage.* If Wolsey had pulled that off, he would have stayed in power.

This was a fantastic overview of the exhibition.
Update: Oh my God, if you have any interest in the Tudors, you need to see this exhibit. There was not a lot of focus on Henry VIII's wives, but if you're interested in the monarchs, the themes of propaganda and myth creation highlighted in this video were very well articulated in the exhibit and those paintings are stunning in person. No photo could capture how luminous the pearls looked and the grandeur of those huge portraits. The plaques finally provided useful insight into the pieces being displayed. This was one of the best exhibits at the Met in years.

Another price tag you can add on apparently Henry spent 4000 Pounds in spices at The Field of the Cloth of Gold while entertaining Francis.
And Hans Holbein the Younger started his career out as a religious painter til The Reformation came along. And he also did the painted portrait of Thomas Cromwell

5:08 "Everything was over the top. More was definitely more!" I would disagree. If you were claiming that Baroque or Rococo art was OTT I would agree. The art of the Renaissance, however, whether in Italy or England, was beautiful, balanced, harmonious and exquisite. Nothing OTT about it. Perhaps this curator has no sense of the utter beauty and the glorious workmanship of the period, based on Roman and Greek precedents.
