Back in the late 90', Les Mesirables came to Hawaii. Lea was playing Eponine at the time. I attended a private dinner for the cast after the show. While the guests were milling about, my father, the host, asked if he could request her to sing something. Lea was gracious and said "Sure!" Then I piped up and asked if she could sing "On My Own". Just her and the producer who played piano. Her control was (and is) so consistent it's amazing. Her voice just enveloped the room and I cried like a baby. Her singing was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. As clean and pristine as crystal when it's rung. I was and still am so grateful to have been in the presence of such talent.

dohaperson1 This was a 25th anniversary condensed celebratory concert, the guests were drinking, even Lea mentioned something about going 'back to drinking' in her banter in between songs. Also, Lea was singing as the queen bee that she is and has become since her role as Kim, she was not portraying the character of Kim. This was a relaxed performance. These actors have all put their time in over the years, let them enjoy themselves and entertain us!

That’s a terrible comparison. Both Mariah and especially the late Whitney’s voices don’t have the longevity that Lea’s voice has. Lea has great genetics and proper technique that keep her voice supple and stronger as she ages. Mariah and Whitney became terrible live performers because they didn’t take care of their instruments, and they only sounded decent after a lot of engineering of their records. Their live performances were disasters compared to when they were starting out. Lea’s live singing, on the other hand, has only gotten better with age, and she even dabbles in classical/legit soprano musical theater repertoire now, not just material for belters.

Okay, you want to talk technical singing? There are multiple ways you can make each vowel sound. If you want an exemplar, look at how Lea and Rachel form that final vowel on "mi-iiiInd". Rachel pulls her lips back and tenses her jaw, which over the long-term is not sustainable. Lea drops her lower jaw more freely and just lets it ring. And look at how Lea just releases all tension on "fight for me in-STEAD" (huge dropped jaw). You can make that sound in a lot of ways. She's chosen the one that's the most sustainable, and in a lot of ways, that's the difference between her and her successors. She understands economy of singing, and doesn't belt. She mixes. Rachel belts, and that makes it harder to sustain vocally for a Broadway career. I think they're both brilliant singers, but Lea is and remains the queen of vocal technique.

Wow! What an spectacular performance for both Filipino singers. At first, I admit I underestimate Rachel's capacity to make it to the broadway. But, when I listen carefully the way she sings. Goosebumps!!! This is her best performance so far and look Lea's reaction she is even amaze while waiting for her turn. Rachel act and there is the emotion on her eyes every time words coming from her mouth. Both of them shows professionalism as they gave each other a chance to shine. Of course, Lea. Nothing to prove anymore. A legacy in broadway shows.

Rachelle belts out the long ascending lines, the story contrast between "children laugh all day" and "all that [she's] been through." THEN, she doesn't take a breath between the long ascending "true...dream," during the ritard, everything hammering home the drama one after the other, as does the next key change at "dream," then she rips out "the dream I long to find" at 2:28 with her high E descending riff on "find," then the french horn descending phrase from the same high E during her great vibrato at the long FIND at she looks up dreaming. I got chills, her best version of the song ever. Damn, it works; it all climaxes right there. The descending, dramatic, emotional three notes, and also the peak of the story arc at what she dreams to FIND. The audience and Lea literally gasp at it. Later, Lea breathes before her high "dream," and it works almost as well.

    • @peterd.9522
      @peterd.9522 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The really important technique that Lea has is you NEVER hear her breathe. Yes, she pauses, before "Dream", as you said, inhales for a split second, but you never hear her inhale. It's that fast and that clean. That to me , is just one of the many reasons that set Lea apart.

Saw Rachelle Ann Go as Gigi in Miss Saigon shortly before it closed in London. Amazing show, her (and Eva Noblezada) were incredible. Not only is she a great singer and performer but a humble person that makes time for her fans too. My wife (and almost every other Filipino in London at the show) was waiting by the stage door for a glimpse of her and when she came out made time for photos with everyone. An unforgettable night for my wife, well...me too, love the London theatre scene.

Rachelle's a belter (though she mixed it here) and has the wider range but Lea - in a very rare (at least to me) occasion - she belted a high E in full chest with amazing vibrato when normally she mixes the high notes. I'm just floored. Rachelle was good but Lea still holds the throne.

They are not nice, they're mostly noise
They swear like men, they screw like boys
I know there's nothing in their hearts
But every time I take one in my arms
    It starts:
    The movie in my mind
    The dream they leave behind
    A scene I can't erase
And in a strong GI's embrace
    Flee this life
    Flee this place
    The movie plays and plays
    I'll find my true romance
He takes me to a place
Where I don't have to dance
    Our children laugh all-day
But all that I've been through
Can't make my dream come true
    Dream
The dream I long to find
    The movie in my mind
I will not cry, I will not think
I'll do my dance, I'll make them drink
When I make love, it won't be me
And if they hurt me, I'll just close my eyes
And see (they are not nice, they're mostly noise)
The movie in my mind (they kill like men, they die like boys)
The dream that fills my head (they give their cash, they keep their hearts)
A man who will not kill (but every night again it starts)
    Who'll fight for me instead
He'll keep the fear at bay
So no one comes at night
    To blow the dream away
    Dream
The dream I have to find
    The movie in my mind
And in a strong GI's embrace

I have seen this clip so many times. Every time, I just am in aww. Both Lean Rachelle Ann have incredible voices. They are unique. Different from pop music. Made for Broadway. I had the the privilege of hearing Lea sing in "The Colours of Christmas" in San Francisco several years ago. I went by myself and had a seat at Davies Symphony Hall. I was seated above the stage just where the performers would enter and exit the stage. The other big name that night was Ben Vereen. Anyway.....it was Lea's turn to shine. She sang "Reflection" from Mulan. I was literally a ball of tears. The woman seated a few seats away from me just touched my arm and said it will be ok. That is what she does.
