    Good to see more of Keegans Kits out in the wild. I would recommend upgrading the fuel line down the road from the green to the clear stuff. After building 5+ of these, def somethingn you want to upgrade in these kits. Happy Heating - will be a game changer for your winter trips/

    I just ran into this power issue on a different heater that came in a toolbox. Just posted a video on my channel about it, but it explains the power issue and what to do about it and why it happens if anyone is curious. Basically the glow plug/startup cycle pulls 12 amps and the dc cig outlets are 10. Mine also came with an AC adapter so I'm using that. It converts the ac into 12v/12A which is roughly 144 watts. It still tripped on my 300w power station but works on my 500w.

    Great work. FYI, The heater draws too many amps at startup. I use an AC to 15a DC adapter, plugged into a 500wh power bank and it works beautifully.
    For startup, due to draw, I also run the vehicle to charge the power bank, until the heater is fully started. This way you are allowing as much power bank reserves for night.

  • @keeganbuilds
    @keeganbuilds หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Couple quick points on the power thing. The 5kw heaters use about 12-15a on startup then die down to a few amps after startup. The voltage drop you are getting is probably because of the length of cord. It looks pretty long in the video. The extra amperage you are getting with the jeep running is because the alternator is kicking up your battery voltage probably to like 13.5v and the long power line is dropping it down to that 12v. But if your battery is sitting at perfect 12v, then the long line is dropping you down to probably 9 or 10v. Im guessing the output on your solar battery is a clean 12v and that's the issue.
    In theory you could use the jeep battery on startup and once running, turn the jeep to auxilary since its only using a few amps. Maybe give that a try?
    Looks like Hunter mentioned it already, but yea that green fuel line is known to fail so id swap with some of the nylon hard line you see in some of the higher quality kits. I would zip tie any excess out of the way of the exhaust.

      Thanks for the pointers! I’m liking the kit…so I think I’ll upgrade the line like you suggested. We found some batteries that work, otherwise I’d probably give your other suggestion a try.

    A 12 volt cigarette socket is usually around 10 amps and that is not quite enough for your type of heater. Some generators will offer a 30 amp 12v plug and that is plenty of power for a diesel heater. You could get a transformer that plugs into the 120 volt of your generator to supply 12 volts at a higher amperage. Look for generator with a XT60 outlet that offers 12 volts at 30 amps. I have a Pecron E3600 that offers a 30 amp but it is a big unit but should supply enough capacity for me to use a electric blanket and a small 120 volt room heater in my tent. I have not tested it yet but plan to soon.

    It’s just the glow plugs. I use a Jackery, and like others have mentioned, the 10a DC output has issues. In my case I just reset the 12v outlet 1-3x then the glow plugs are warm and no other issues while using. You could simply get an AC to DC plug off your power bank until the glow plugs are warm then switch back to 12vDC. I use my AC to DC adapter from my Iceco fridge to warm the glow plugs if I don’t want to go through the 12v reset song and dance

    I have the Hcalory unit in the case and extended the wiring for the screen so I can have that inside the truck and store it inside the case insread of being mounted on the otside where it can get broken during travel.Also extended the power cables with clamp ends to go on the battery.

    If you already have a heater and want to convert it to suitcase style then I suppose this could be a good way to go. But if you’re going to buy a heater and want the suitcase style then it’s less expensive to just simply buy the unit already set up for $219.

      They are awesome…I used Rob’s Propex last year and loved it. Not sure how much extra propane you need to bring…but I loved it. Also not sure if it causes more condensation that diesel, which is really dry. You might look into that.
