- Hey everyone! Welcome back to another entry in my series of modifying and customizing wooden trains! Today's victim is Oliver, a knock-off I've had since 2013, so I feel it was the perfect time for a revamp! Hope you enjoy this journey in restoring this classic character

That little rectangular thing in front of his dome is a feed pipe, if I remember correctly. It’s also noticeable on the LMS Black 5.

fyi these bootleg wooden railway engines are painted and riddled with lead paint. Do be careful when working with these bootlegs!

I actually had the led paint wooden railway knock off Rheneas. In my opinion the worst part was the white wheels and the Sir Handel’s face instead of Rheneas’ face! I never paid the price with the lead paint
@@zig987 As long as you didn't breath it in you should be ok. The problem with that though is lead paint doesn't have a smell to it. If you have any feelings of fatigue, abdominal pain, or hyperactivity *GO TO THE HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY*

I do suggest to add cleartape over the decals. It serves as a slight protection incase you spill something on it. In this case, I add my decals on my customs after they're all painted and clearcoated.
Anyways, seeing Cosplayers with Oliver was super unreal, I hope you had fun!
Thanks so much! That’s a good idea for the decals, I might consider doing that in future! The clear coat from the spray paint does a good job covering the decals atm.
And yes I had a ton of fun :)

This was an awesome journey to walk us through. I have recently discovered your channel and really appreciate the crispness to each of your customs. The time you put in makes them super impressive. Awesome work!
Just a tip.
If your not going to use a air brush, I recommend dry brushing.
It may take a little longer but, it saves paint, gives you more control, and makes the end product look smoother _WITHOUT_ having to sand it!
Also next time add the primer to the parts before gluing them together(obviously don't paint the sections of wood that are going to touch and be glued) I find that doing this helps me find mistakes faster earlier on.

I have done a bit of dry-brushing in the past for painting detail on some dioramas, quite a handy technique!

8:58 That's the cover for the top feed and it's pretty common on both GWR locomotives and those on the LMS from Stanier onwards. Henry and Duck also have top feed covers.

This is a great custom man for my favorite character you definitely did him Justice. I thought the 2014 2015 model was perfect but then I realized it doesn't have a firebox. Like your City of Truro custom you knocked this one out of the park. Personally I think Duck should be next so that you can round out the the Great Western engines. Keep up the good work man.

Wow, that is insane! This is a level of quality custom that I could never hope to match. Although I did manage to make a pretty good custom Mavis using a knockoff, however it's nowhere near the level of effort as this.

a beautiful watch, honestly this is the best wooden railway oliver i've ever seen
i always was intrigued by the idea of using these knockoffs as bases for customs, but i never bothered to try it cus i think i heard somewhere they had lead paint? and i just didnt wanna risk it. but with how nicely this turned out, maybe theyre more capable than i woulda thought.

Once again, it's fans like you I can count on to make high-quality Thomas Wooden Railway models, which is more than can be said for the official company. Heck, if I were in charge of Thomas Wooden Railway, I would have had an Oliver model like this available for commercial sale in Early 2023, most likely bundled with Toad.

The thing between Oliver's Chimney and dome is a topfeed, a device that helps mix the cold water going into the hot boiler. Henry has one too (after his rebuild).

This guy polished a turd-of-an-engine and made a masterpiece
If I would make one change, though, I personally think the back wheel should’ve been a trackmaster pull a long wheel. If you’re unfamiliar, they’re kind of like take-n-play wheels, but designed to be slightly bigger and fit on trackmaster track.
As such, they are noticeably smaller in size than wooden railway wheels, but close enough, that the perfectly represent bogey wheels in wooden railway scale.

I would definitely like to see how you’re going to tackle Duck, considering that he doesn’t have any knockoff in wooden railway that comes to mind. My best guess is to use another knockoff Oliver and possibly an Edward for the face? (IDK, I just want to see the original face design again.)
I don’t want to spoil much, but I’m hoping to use an official model for him, but not 100% sure yet
Now I know this normally doesn't fit well with wooden railway, but if you really wanted to, add some custom windows like on the Tomy 1998 Oliver but this is just a suggestion!
I’d be proud to see a tutorial on decals, and maybe a custom of Dudley made from Gordon (engine) and Emily (tender)

I’d have to disagree. Everyone has a start in their modelling journey with different levels of skills, and that’s just where that individual happens to be.... His skills will develop and improve as time goes on, what’s important is if you’re happy with your work or not.

Not good at lining? Just use thin vinyl tape or thin paint pens. If brush skills start off not good best thing to do is find alternatives which won't ruin the model.
