Used to own a 75 Dolomite - to this day I have never driven a car that was so much fun!! It was unbelievable around corners. yes, had issues with overheating but found new tech radiator helped with that. But off the mark could easy do 60 kmh before had to change gear...
You seem to have tackled the tip of the iceberg as far as the rust is concerned.😂😂😂. Very informative. What is obvious to those in the profession is not so to the normal custodian of these very attractive motor cars.
Thanks for your comments. Tip of the iceberg? Would you care to add other areas of the car that I haven’t mentioned that typically rust? I included quite a few in the video. On this car I have changed floor pans, inner and outer sills, boot floor, wing sections, inner wing sections, outer rear panels, door skins, rear boot and front valance.
Great vid, are you from Dorset ? Car number VPR, I am thinking of buying a Stag, I had one back in 1985 no problems whatsoever, looking for a Stag in Topaz. Your dash and chrome dials are excellent.
Thanks and yes near Dorset/Hampshire. With a few improvements (see one of my other stag videos) it is as reliable and convenient as a modern car. Handling, performance and comfort better than a lot as well. Prefer the stag on all those points to an mx5 that I've driven recently. BTW I like your channels. Lots of subscribers! How do you cope with copyright issues? Any tips?
As I said I owned a stag in 85,on a R plate,I sold it in 1990. There was a Stag dealer in Bournemouth many years ago opposite Spinks garage Poole Hill. I live in France now but grew up in Bmth. I have never seen a Stag in France, I am sure the french would go crazy if they saw one. But Topaz is a rare colour and they are generally around the 15000 mark. I have about 5000K, I own a 1971 Mini Cooper S
It was a long time ago that I did mine but this guy seems to have a video of a technique that works. Good luck, and lots of patience! th-cam.com/video/C2MMj3Rw3H4/w-d-xo.html
Great looking car !!. Awful engines. Even the one above has got bottom end rattle when he catches it "on the crank" and it looks like a good one for a Stag. Severe overheating problems and RUST. I have seen one with 2" of plonk in the doors about 3" from the bottom. I went to a car show near Chard and there was a stag there. Lashy old cam chains and the sides were all humpeley bumpeley in the sunlight. Nearly made me spew. These cars were nearly fcuked when I used to buy and sell them back in the eighties. No shit.
Crobular I Crobular I Thanks for taking the time to participate with comments. In the eighties you are right in saying the quality was not good enough with various problems like rust and overheating. But through perserverence by many problem solving engineers these issues have been overcome enough to turn the stag into a great car for performance, handling, engine reliability and of course bucketfuls of charisma. It takes time and lots of work (years on mine!) but it can be done. Just to touch on a few of your points, my stag has no big end knock, the roughness in the recording is just the mic distorting due to the rather loud straight through exhaust and other upgrades. Yes there are plenty of rusty stags out there still and with poorly filled doors etc. although isn't it amazing that 40% of stags made are still on the road!? This touches on the reason for doing some of these videos, so that people know what to look for and how to improve the stag to an acceptable (i.e. reliable) quality. It took years with mine but it is now completely reliable and runs at nominal temperature at all times even when gunning up to 7000 rpm full throttle and with more power than the original engine. Let's not forget the stag and triumph v8 engine were raced by Tony Hart for many years reliabley. Being an overhead cam engine it revs up willingly and much more so than the competition like the ford Essex v6 engine. Most of the stags that had engine swaps early on have now been swapped back to triumph v8 engines as they are now well understood and are nicer to drive and sound better. I had a ford v6 engined stag a while back and the triumph engined one I have now is much better. So to wrap up, yes it did have lots of problems, but the solutions are well understood now and through logic and engineering it can be turned into a reliable, desirable car.
A very informative film. A "must" for anyone who owns, or is considering owning, a Stag
Thanks for your kind comment.

I have found memories of my Dolomite sprint as well.

I'd love to own a Stag, but it'd have to be a U.S. model as I cannot stomach a car that's not lefthand drive....it drives me nuts....lol

This feller has obviously never been near a Stag ever or his grandad may have told him about them.
Waxoil Just use boiling hot water not a heat gun
Nah, no good for heating a whole 1L or 5L can!
