I'm 27 have a wife and 3 kids and I'm trying to save my small family farm in Pennsylvania in a town where nobody wants working farms in high school I was looked down upon because of my farming lifestyle when I take my equipment through town I almost enjoy the looks of disgust I get and I'll never stop trying to keep going your an inspiration to me and I thank you for representing farmers like you do

Hey Wes, I agree with you 100%. I spent my share of time in an office environment as a necessity (family, etc...). I am now a truck driver and absolutely love it. I do work for someone, so my time belongs to 'them', but I absolutely love it. I too put up with the 'oh, you're a truck driver', but I tell them I'm the happiest I ever been.
    Love your videos!

Farming is the most under appreciated career in the world. It takes ingenuity like turning a chop-saw on its side and clamping it to rails to chop. Now, that is what I call smart. Kudos on that.

You are so right about the time thing. I worked in and out of an office for many yrs. down in NC. Had a small cattle farm on the side. The happiest day of my life was when I left the day to day hassle of working for a company and went to the little farm full time. Dirt, cows, tractors, repairs on hay equipment was not work to me. The enjoyment of spending my "time" the way I wanted to was so rewarding. Keep the videos coming

Wes, I left the farm 21 years ago to chase a dream of being a wildlife photographer. Photo shop has taken all of the money out of photography. Now any dumb weasel can take a photo with a cell phone, take it home and photo shop it and get a great photo without any real photography skill.
I now live in Alaska and love Alaska, I have people that need me to stay where I am but oh how I miss farming. My hart is in farming. Most days I wish I had never left agriculture.
I will stay where I am at because of people who I care very much about. As long as you keep making I will be connected to my roots. I like how farms work and bandit farmer and a few others but every morning that I am home I look forward to your videos and when I get back from a long trip I rush over to the computer to see what I have missed.
    Thanks ,Wess

I spent 8.5 hours on the ocean today I took over 300 photos and I hope to have 3 good ones. The humpbacks where lazy and just didn't do any spectacular lunge feeding shows not one breach either. I normally get 3 to 5% good but today the whale just didn't cooperate. I had one harbor seal that seemed friendly enough but the light wasn't what it needed to be.
If you know any budding photographers who want to shoot wildlife and wilderness photos I have a good tip for them. Shoot high school sports for free. Until you can predict what basket ball player is going to do you don't have a chance with wildlife.
I will check out your cannel.

My family comes from a rural background and in some ways we still are. Rural people are some of, if not, the most intelligent people that I know. Their abilities to think through a situation and to look through the dazzling effect of B.S. never ceases to pique my interest and, frankly speaking, to amaze me. You're down to earth, compassionate and very wise, although a tad crusty around the edges. Just like good bread you were raised right. Keep doing what you do and it'll all go right. Thank you for your thoughts and channel.

I agree with you, public perception of farming "downtrodden", that about sums it up. People from all walks of life take food for granted, go to the store grab what they need.....
My wife and I were driving home from Fort Edward the other evening, just starting to get dark, outside of Argle, NY on route 40 came onto traffic going about 15 to 20mph as some people pealed off and some passed we found ourselves behind farm tractor with no lights, and you are completely right about jerks driving with no care or concerns. Debbie and I stayed behind tractor and I used my 4 ways to keep speeders off from his rear, truly amazing how people of every back ground don't give a crap about anyone else on this Earth, really sucks...
My close friend Scott and I work together delivering argon during the week. But he has mentioned that he would like to start growing Christmas trees with seven acres, but very apprehensive. I bought a 5' tiller so he could start, now he's trying to find seedlings, slow process, but we have great respect for hardworking farmers.
Keep up the good work, p.s., were you able to get new brain for John Deere? $1700 hope they replaced that used one that came through as new.... unbelievable

Wes, I have always envied farmers for the down to earth life they lead. I wish my life had gone in a different direction because I always loved working in the soil and growing crops, even though it was just for personal consumption. You have a honorable profession and I'll bet that if some of those other people who look down their noses at farmers, took a good look and compaired their profession and life to yours, they would have to agree that what you do is much better than what they do and your job is much more rewarding in the long run.

Wes I have farmed for over 40 yrs. At a class reunion 35 yrs ago some one ask what I did and I said farm .
He said I figure you for becoming a Dr . I thought it strange since I had spend most of my high school yrs in
    shop and Ag classes.
You are right about thinking being a farmer is just dirty old job. But how many of those people drive a combine that cost
over twice what there house is valued at today.
A lot of these people have no idea what it costs to raise a crop and far few could manage the operation and show a profit.
We as farmers get live a life of freedom few of them could deal with everyday.

My Dad would have said "you've hit the nail on the head".. Wes - you've summed up exactly why a man (or woman) would rather be in business for themselves rather than punching somebody else's clock be it more profitable or not - because it's "your life"! I posted a video on my channel time back voicing almost exactly the same sentiments, so I know for sure where you are coming from. Watching your video today confirmed probably why I enjoy looking forward to your daily postings so much every morning during my coffee break. I'm a woodworker, not a farmer though farming has been in my family forever - but the basis for our lives are pretty much the same. I respect mostly how hard you work, how aggressive and passionate you are about your life and so appreciative that you share it with all of us. I'm only about 30 miles east of you and hope some day we cross paths. Thanks so much Wes!

Hey Wess, I totally agree. Back in 2016 I started a pressure washing company. I did everything I could do to gather up business but supriseingly for a desert, I hade a hard time and I started to actually run out of money trying to keep this creation of mine going but one day I got a job to wash a dozer, grader and one or two other prices of machinery. The night before I went to the local gas station to fill up my truck, pressure washer, and a couple of gas cans. I hauled around two 330 gallon water tanks on a trailer so I could be totally mobile. Unfortunately after I toped off I pulled away from the pumps and there was a small dup in the lot and I crossed it, about 20 feet after the trailer passed I heard the sound of wood cracking like thunder and metal snapping. And my truck came to a complete stop. I got out to (with the front half of my truck sticking out into traffic) see what the noise was, and to my suppress both of my water tanks broke through the floor of the trailer. I was mad and wanting to cry all at the same time, but I got back into my truck put it into 4low and pushed the trailer and tanks back up into the parkinglot. Once I got everything back home I know I hade to get to this job tomorrow. So I put a water tank in the bed of my truck and filled it up with water and drove it for a couple of miles just to see how the truck would act. It didn't go so well. So I hade to tell the customer I was not going to be able to come out to wash his equipment because he was in the middle of nowhere and I hade no water. I tried for a couple more months to make it work, but with a name like (John Deere's Mobile Wash) I kept getting a lot of calls for remote washes so I couldn't do it. The moral of the story is... we will always have tsst's in our life, you just have to answer and keep doing your best and keep moving forwards.

Came from farm stock on both parents sides. Dairy farming in Upstate New York. Both grand parents were farmers, 7 uncles were farmers, 5 cousins and currently none of these families are actively farming and its a shame. Used to travel across NY on route 20 and would see many working farms now there is a handful. Hard work that no one wants to do.

I used to work on a dairy farm when I was a teenager. Milked cows, put up corn silage, bailed hay. Later I joined the Air Force and then became a computer programmer. I must say I miss the farm life. I can still smell the hay, the diesel, feel the hot sun on my skin, taking a break in the field to eat lunch, hanging out all day with like minded people, and the feeling of a hard days sweat. Unless you have done it you won't understand.

I'm jealous when someone says they're a farmer, Here I am stuck working for the "man" being told where and what I'm supposed to be doing. When all I want to do is be a farmer and work for myself. All things come in time with hard work and I guess once I finish working for the "man" in 2yrs I'll be retiring with my 20yrs of service and I can start my farm and begin doing what I want to do. In reply to the woman looking at her phone swerving towards your Dad. The text and driving people have replaced the drunk drivers. They may be worse. I see it every day going to and from work, and have had several close calls while hauling my Fairlane on the trailer. I have at least 3 to 4 close calls every week due to inconsiderate people not paying attention to where they are going.

I think I was about 12 when my Dad looked at me and said - You need a part time job to keep you out of trouble. He piled me into the car and drove Us to the end of our dirt road where it connected with the main 2 lane road. We stopped in front of a Farmhouse. He said - walk up to the door, knock, introduce yourself and say " I'm here to apply for a farm hand ".
    This being the early 70's.
This was a 2 Family farm.
I worked there every day after school and most weekends. We milked 75 head, raised angus beef, sold cord wood and also had a Apple orchard.
Stayed thru the good times as well as the bad times ( a death of a family member due to a tragic accident )
I even managed to come back during my off time from College.
Finally left after I started my full time career in a different state.
some 35 years later... I see this as some of the best times of my life.
    Always thank a Farmer.

Thanks for sharing what that young man had to say. I've hauled a lot of hay into that part of Ohio, Mt. Hope, Kidron, Wooster, Danville, etc. It's beautiful countryside down there in Amish country compared to my northern Ohio flatlands. But the idiots are getting thick down that way between the tourist traps to visit the Amish and the suburban transplants moving out of the Columbus area. I'm glad to see another young man trying to make a living at farming. Like you said, there's no better life if you can farm full time. Hopefully at some point, I can do that too. For now, part time farmer and full time maintenance engineer will have to do.

All types of works are needed, but to put down, or think your putting down someone because he/she has chose this type of job is just terrible. Work is work and it dosent matter what you do. I used to drive trucks for a living, you meet a nice lady, and the first thing they want to know is , what do you do for a living, ...Truck Driver, and away they go.

you have to love what you do. farming is honest and hard work, I just don't see why people look down or feel sorry for farmers.
I graduated in 87 I wasn't that popular and looked down on on school because I wasn't into sports, took vo-ag and was in the FFA. since graduating I have seen maybe four people from my class. we just had our 30 year reunion I'm probably one of a handful that live at the same address and never got a notice or invitation not that I cared to go because I would've just got that "I'm sorry" attitude. I only found out about it because my neighbor went to college with some class mates and the topic came up.
I feel the same attitude from family we just had our family reunion a lot come from Pittsburgh and Detroit and want to come over to watch me milk cows and I can tell its just a novelty to them.
l love and enjoy the country and this way of life it would be better if milk prices were at fair levels compared to inputs but I still wouldn't trade it for any shop job that I have to worry about being laid off from or to have a BMW and I don't miss anyone I went to school with.

  • @lukestrawwalker
    @lukestrawwalker 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    AMEN and amen!!!
I've had similar experiences... It's not that I COULDN'T do anything else... I had a full ride scholarship to a tech school through FFA and I've got my HD diesel certificate, but I farmed all through tech school and came back to it afterwards... jobs were in VERY short supply when I graduated and the Gulf War 1 had just ended and lots of vets coming home looking for nonexistent jobs. I could work on garbage trucks in Houma, Louisiana, or I could farm-- didn't take a lot of math to figure that one out! I worked for United Gas Pipeline mowing rights-of-way til they folded up the local office and moved it all to the other side of Houston. In 96, we had a KILLER drought that wiped out our crops and I managed to save the cattle herd (most of it anyway) and once the rain returned and we put up enough hay for the winter, I decided to go to the police academy at the college in the next town over, and graduated near the top of my class as a licensed peace officer. I planted the 97 crop in the week off between the state exam and the graduation, matter of fact, and decided to keep farming.
No, we're not "upwardly mobile". I don't drive a BMW, nor do I have any desire to. I was engaged to a girl that eventually I figured out we were simply incompatible, so I broke it off-- she wanted to live in a big house on a hill and drive a new BMW, and I could care less about those things. If that's what she wants, more power to her, and I hope she found it with someone else. At any rate, I have a decent home and decent (if old) vehicles, but I can go anywhere I want to go anytime I want to. I drove a school bus for nine years before my nerves were finally shot, and the new bosses decided their definition of "success" was not having ANY calls from irate parents... and people nowdays totally SUCK and will call on you for looking at their kid sideways, let alone for fussing at them for misbehaving or not sitting down so they don't get injured or killed if some other idiot on the road hits the bus and causes a wreck. So, we mutually parted company and that was that. My time is my own again, THANK GOD!
My sister is one of those people who think they're "better than you" because she's got a fancy-pants job (middle school band director) where I'm still 'on the farm'. She and her husband, who's an assistant principal, make DOUBLE what my wife and I make (in terms of take-home pay) and they have a new car and a brick house in town and all kinds of fancy stuff, but they can't even afford a McDonald's cheeseburger once a week, because for all their money, it's all going to pay for all that fancy stuff. They actually scraped up enough money to take their two kids on vacation this summer for a few days at a water park in north Texas; that's the ONLY family trip they've made in probably the last five years or more. My wife, daughter, and I, go to Indiana to see the family twice a year (I go twice more to help the BIL with planting/harvesting crops) and we even went a third time this year and last year because our nephews were getting married. We take trips all the time here and there.
SO, you REALLY hit the nail on the head with the "who should feel sorry for whom?" question. I know I'm very blessed to be doing what I'm doing. My wife is a school teacher, and I run two farms 100 miles apart for my elderly mother, as I ran them for my Dad before he passed last year and for my grandmother before that. My Granddad passed away in 1983 and within two years I was basically running the farms by myself-- my Dad worked at a nuclear power plant because he could make SO much more money than farming.
We're fairly small farmers, but I never really wanted to borrow a bazillion bucks and be a bigshot farmer, either. Life is about how you live it, not in how much money you have, how fancy a car (or truck) you drive, or how many acres you run... at least not to me...
    Later! OL J R :)

Wesley, this could not have been put any clearer. We all chase success and fortune, in our own way. Some choose to chase it in a large office, while some of use chase it from a tiny off surrounded by nature, and lots of dirt and dust. I could not imagine myself doing anything different. I've watched and been subbed quite a few years, sadly I come home at night, and sometimes sitting in the field taking a break and watch YT videos about farming. When we do what we love it IS our life. Finally, we all are passionate about what we do and the reason we watch others might be to get ideas, give advice, or just simply because we understand the daily struggles. Hope you have a great day!!!

I left my office jobs during and after college, and went full time farming. A few called me insane, but thankfully a lot of people here yet in NoDak have a lot of respect for agriculture... sadly it is getting worse and worse here every week to the point where I hate having to go to the bigger cities.

I 100% agree. I'm in high school and I do want to get into being a agricultural mechanic with my own business and do some hay farming as well. And all my friends are aspiring to do great things in life and I just think to myself why would you want to do that and not get to make your own decisions on what you do to make a living in this world.

But in the end i went back to working at a farm and at the same time I started up my own farming business from scrath. I may hav to work 100 hours a month moore to even come close to the same income, but. I´m 100% happier!

Farmers feed the world, I personally look up to farmers with respect, give way to tractors and other farm machinery on the roads. It is a reflection on society today where there is little or no respect for others and if you do not drive a fancy car you are not a success. Hey if I could swap my car, job and life to be a farmer I would. Total respect to all farmers, probably the most honest paid job on the planet.

Wes, I was born and raised (3rd generation) in residential and light commercial construction. As a youngster, I got tired of wondering in the wintertime if there would be a roof over my head or the next meal. So, I got an education and became an engineer. I did this on my own! Now, over 40 years later, I look back on my professional accomplishments, and there have been many. Sadly, for me, I can't show others what I accomplished in my professional life. There are people alive today who most likely would not be had I not done my job better than the next guy, but they will never know. I can show others the hundreds of homes I helped build as a kid. I can show buildings built or worked on with pride by my family over the many years before and after I was born. We each largely choose our own paths in life. Good luck to you and yours on your choices and endeavors.

Ten percent of my little class that graduated 55 years ago are still farmers. Of those three two have college degrees. all three grew up on farms and farm the land they grew up on. They all make good livings and one "retired" meaning his little brother two years younger runs most of the farm but in retirement he has been ordained a minister. Nothing these guys did is less than any of us other 27 who some farmed and are dead also.

Worked on God father's farm when I was 12 then worked at a large nursery very much like farming meaning plowing, discing, planting, etc. Always fixing things when broken if I was able. I loved it but could not making a living at it. Unless you have worked ground you don't understand the noble experience that being someone who worked this field. I graduated as an engineer flew jets for many years and did end working Special Operations when I retired. However the most rewarding work was working the soil. How totally ridiculous to think that way. Where do these people think produce comes from? I admire you Wes!

I totally agree. I wear many hats but I am a farmer and a plumber/HVAC tech mainly. I get that all the time being a plumber. People.have no idea what is involved in the plumbing field and how much you can actually make as well. You tell them you're a plumber and they immediately look down on you. I then ask them what they have in the way of college debt, and I then inform them the average pay of a plumber and their jaw hits the ground lol. Now there are massive benefits to being the guy that comes in and allows you to buy their time too. Like not having to be worried to death if he can make this particular bill or pay for the broken 4960 transmission or taxes etc etc, but I totally get where you're coming from. What I can see you know but failed to really express (no offense) is the deep impact farming really has on our lives. People with big office city jobs don't understand it and never will have the pleasure of doing so. Like the photography guy was saying, it gets in your blood. Watching a crop you busted your ass to put into the ground, working way into the night to beat a storm, working it's way up in neat rows. Fog laying above in the sunrise. Or when you get done harvesting. And there's the smells. Yea not all are pleasant but there's the undescribable but wonderful smell of freshly turned dirt in the spring. Or that smell corn makes as you are chopping it or shelling it. How about freshly mown hay. I'm sure you know all about that one Wes haha. I don't know how to describe it 100% but if you're a farmer it feels like a life choice more than just a choice of profession to me. And if you quit being a farmer, the yearn to do it never really leaves you. You still constantly pay attention to the weather. You see others running equipment and you want out there in the cab with them. That's what that kind of people never will understand. Let them look down on you. Just smile inside because you know you have so much more than they do and you know what they're missing.

    • @sstroh08
      @sstroh08 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Also will agree with assholes on the road. It's not quite as bad here in southern Indiana I don't think but there are plenty of idiots that come from the city to go boating on our lake that do ridiculous things on the road. I usually just ride the middle of the road when not approaching a blind hill or corner so nobody can pass me if I'm on a narrow road like you was showing the other day. Ticks them off but it also doesn't risk anybody getting killed. Kind of like putting children in a playpen the way I see it. If they want to behave like children I'll treat them like such.
