- We regularly get questions from listeners about how many languages Mark speaks, so he's put together a video speaking 10 different languages. As he explains, he's more confident in some languages than others, but in the video he tells his "language story" in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, Norwegian, Portuguese, Mandarin, German and Swedish.

I started at 58 and can hold my own in Spanish now. B2 pushing C1.
My mum did an OU course in Spanish in her 60s, when she was half-deaf, and she earned a first. You can do it!
Oh his German was so great! Especially his pronunciation. I am really impressed!!
And his french is perfect !! prononciation, diction,... everything !

Hello Mark, greetings from West Virginia. I think you're brilliant. I took Spanish in high school & college but sadly I rarely use it. I wanted to brush up on my Spanish & did a search on Spotify for language podcasts which led me to Coffee Break. I've been listening to your Spanish podcast for the past couple months & they have been really helpful. You & Kara make the lessons enjoyable & always interesting. 😊
Although I am from the US, I have heard German from my parents all of my life & have spoken it when needed. Yours was outstanding & with excellent enunciation! I have enjoyed learning Spanish from your lessons over the past few years. Thanks for the great videos!

Salve Mark! This was so inspiring! Your Norwegian pronuncoation is really good Mark, a tip is to remember that in Norwegian we use hard G’s ( sounds like a K) which differs from the swedes soft G’s( sounds like j) 😊I follow your italian class and love it! Julie

Mark I really enjoy all of your work, I completely dropped language learning after secondary school like so many do but have picked it up in mid 20s much in part thanks to Coffee Break. I think this is still a great time to re-start the learning process.

I'm sitting here slack jawed, wondering how one one brain could possibly process ten languages, to I'm learning German and only German but my worry is that wenn i eventually decide to learn something else my brain will just want to switch from English to foreign and get everything mixed up.
I've listened through coffee break German countless times and it's helped me more than anything else.

Wow, after years of listening to your Scottish English and Spanish, this was quite a revelation. Your Italian accent started with a tinge of English, but when you got into your flow you sounded more Italian than me (after 40 years in London, my Venetian accent has resurfaced).

Mark your lessons are amazing and honestly the best way to learn a language if one doesn’t have the opportunity to live immersed in the country and culture. I lived in Italy decades ago and had forgotten almost all my Italian but with coffee break Italian it’s all coming back. Grazie! I look forward to Coffee Break Turkish in the near future. ( btw, my Scottish has also gotten quite good thanks to you!)

I recently retired and and the question people inevitably ask me is "what do you spend your time doing.?" I tell them I am learning French, Italian, Spanish, German, Greek, Dutch and a few others. They look at me as if I am nuts. Having just listened to Mark speaking all those languages, I know it is a very rewarding thing to do. Thank-you Mark for demonstrating that learning lots of languages is entirely possible.
Having started Spanish later in life- coffee break has helped me a lot. Now working on my French. (My daughter is studying French at uni and used coffee break on her way). Mark you’re an inspiration. I had no idea you didn’t start your language journey until high school - keep inspiring and teaching us!

Hello Mark! I began learning Mandarin with Coffee Break over a year ago. Then found that you did Spanish (amongst other languages), when I had to take a course in university last year. I want to speak Spanish well, and I want to speak Chinese, but I am focusing on Spanish currently. Thank you for your hard work.

Ten languages? You make me feel like a linguistic troglodyte, Mark. A fellow Celt like yourself, I speak (in order): English (mother tongue), French, German, Italian and now Spanish. I also speak a bit of Irish (from school) and Flemish (having lived for a year in Brussels in the ‘90s).
You are right about the importance of practice. I live in Mexico now, I teach French and I have a couple of German friends, so practicing those languages isn’t a problem.
The hardest thing I find (like you said in the video) is not mixing up my Italian and Spanish. I worked for four years in Turin in the late ‘90s and when I left I’d completely fluent Italian.
But I’ve been in Guadalajara now for two years, and my Spanish now dominates my Italian, which is very frustrating. Not for understanding. That’s still fine. But for speaking it. I search for the Italian word, but Spanish comes flooding out of my mouth.
So I was well impressed that you manage to speak any Catalan or Portuguese, let along not totally mix up Norwegian and Swedish.
Speaking of which, I’ve listened to some of your Coffee Break Swedish podcasts, which are fun, both linguistically and culturally. Though were I to learn a new tongue, I’d love to learn Arabic. In case you ever think of doing Coffee Break Arabic. 🤔
If you ever (post pandemic) do that tour of Latin America that you spoke about, and are in Mexico, feel free to drop by Guadalajara for a multilingual chat.
Final question, do you speak any Gaelic? The one time I travelled in Scotland, I was surprised by how much of the road signs in western Scotland I could understand through my knowledge of school Irish.
Anyway, keep up the good work, Mark. I’m an avid listener to your Italian (ciao Francesca!) and German pods (though I agree that German grammar is a pain).

It seems that it's kind of a thing, to mix spanish with italian, im afraid to learn italian now, lol. Although my native language is spanish so maybe it won't be such a problem?
@@Ryosuke1208 If you’re native tongue is Spanish, you’ll be fine. My Mexican wife’s speaks Italian and doesn’t get confused like I do. The problem arises when learning two foreign languages that are closely related.

you being an older person gives me soooo much joy and motivation to also learn new languages. i love languages so much but i never felt motivated enough for have a continuous study, but sometime ago i felt in LOVE for Mandarin (id say obcessed is more appropriate). Have find your coffee break chinese and see that you're an older person also learning with the audience makes it so much more relatable, it's the feeling of "he's struggling with tones, with the r sound, with remembering certaing words and me too!! we are on this together!!"

Hi Mark, I usually never comment but could not resist after watching your video. I am 43, and I started learning Spanish with coffee break Spanish 10 years ago and I found it amazing how easy it was to follow your lessons. It helped me a lot as we were going to Spain for a humanitarian project and I had realised that many people don't speak any other languages than Spanish. Now we had to do another project in Italy 2-weeks ago and I started immediately learning Italian on the plane, playing with some podcasts, without making any progress till I found coffee break Italian, then again it was rolling on! though I have to admit it was very confusing with Spanish, and I already spoke French so I find myself very similar to Katie's situation 😅. I speak native Persian and Swedish, and have picked up some German with friends, so it was amazing to watch you switch between all these languages that I already knew, with flawless intonation and pronounciations👍, I was impressed by all of them except for your Swedish , which sounded very Norwegian 😂. I must say I'm very impressed not only by your linguistical skills, but even more by your polite,very professional and humble personality, I feel I've known you for years! Many people complement my language skills, I never studied languages professionally or at university level...so they don't know my secret "coffee break languages" 😉

What a fun video! Listening to you, I was delighted to still understand German and Swedish many years after studying them. I am currently studying French with Coffee Break, and I have been reluctant to revisit my other languages for fear of confusing my brain, haha! But it sounds like maybe this is not the case? Très impressionnant ! Je suis Canadienne-française et parle français et anglais. Il n'est effectivement jamais trop tard pour apprendre d'autres langues. J'ai commencé a apprendre l'espagnol a 61 ans et l'italien a 67 ans (il y a trois mois. J'apprends aussi le créole haïtien depuis quelques semaines. C'est difficile mais pas impossible. Je viens juste de découvrir Coffee Break Italian et c'est tres éducatif. Félicitations pour votre excellent travail !

I`m from Argentina, so my mother tongue is Spanish ( Español del Rio de la Plata) which has some differences from the Spanish you speak, and I can speak Italian. I have been trying to learn Japanese, Dutch, German and French and sometimes i feel like i can't learn that many languages and be good in them too but to see that you know these many languages as well as you do means alot to so many people including me. Mark is the real deal. There are lots of polyglots, but when I hear some of them speak, they are a bit shaky in some languages. Mark is up front about what he speaks well and what he has a fair knowledge of. He is also obviously an internationalist and a multiculturalist. What an inspiration.
Very interesting, thanks for the history in your language learning! A beautiful and fascinating language you might want to consider in the future is Haitian Creole. It’s an incredible language from a wonderful country!
