Originally, Efrem Zombielist Jr. was to star in this film, but he decided to do the FBI TV show instead when he saw the stop motion photography work of the Jerky boys. The armorer for the show was Secret Sam, and the raincoats were provided by the dumpster of a nearby X rated theater. The Raspberry brothers won second and third place in the low rent Robert Lansing look alike contest, and the entire crew was charged under the Rico statute for mopery with intent to gawk.
Only second and third place, eh? That's a travesty that would make even Chaplin take notice. But I must ask, getting your clothing from the dumpster of an X-rated theater is a bad thing? I'm asking for a friend.

@@AtomicSnackBar I'm looking I think when I got the DVD I was changing over from tapes to discs (last longer) so some of my tapeiphiles friends who thought I was selling out snagged it, I will keep looking keep up the good work
I'm surprised I haven't encountered this movie before. I have trolled various video stores here in Chicago that specialize in the obscure and whacky out there movies and shows, and I can't recall ever seeing this title. It may have only been released locally at first before the Night Flight broadcast. Sadly I only got to see a third y minute version of the show that was probably done for syndication. I think if they had the budget they could have gotten Los Straitjackets to do the music, this is right up their alley.
Thinking about it, I'm not sure I've ever heard mention of it outside of that original airing I caught on TV. So if I hadn't been lucky enough to be recording that night's broadcast of Night Flight, I wouldn't know of it either. I'm surprised it even got a DVD release. It's essentially a student film.
Night Flight aired it once in 1982. I came home late from drinks with friends and watched the last 30 minutes. Over 40 years later, the wonderful Mr Sterling helped ID the film and I found it here th-cam.com/video/oy-3yXCvmMA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NulRr3DjixC3wmD2 😀
I poured myself a refreshing UniCola and sat down to enjoy the latest from Mr. Sterling. I must say it was very cool to see the addition of a commercial for my all time favorite toy from my childhood. The Secret Sam briefcase with gun and camera.
The YT version isn't the best quality print, but it is certainly watchable. All rather misleading title aside, it's a neat little, indy movie. Secret Sam says so.
@creech54 your comment about it being on TH-cam and how more people will know of it as a result reminds me of something Mathew Holnes said of his short lived series Garth Marengi's Dark Places, a show much like this movie, a parody of low budget sci-fi shows; he basically admitted if it wasn't for unauthorized TH-cam uploads no one would have heard of the show. The cast certainly doesn't complain about those uploads because they all got career resurgence through them and are getting more movies and television roles than when Dark Places originally aired.
@@raulcruz716 I remember when that one was airing on Adult Swim. I didn't watch it for some reason, though. I should give it a shot, being a big fan of both Richard Ayoade and Matt Berry.
@@AtomicSnackBar please do. That is one of those Meta shows before anyone knew what that was. And for all of us who've made excuses for the low budgets and bad special effects and hammy acting of what we watch, this show is almost cathartic.
@@raulcruz716 Maybe you can help me out on this one. There was a show that ran around that same time, British as well, and I believe was a parody of UK TV. Really funny. I remember there was an episode where they were using science to create the most fearsome animal in existence. But I can't for the life of me remember the name of the show.
I used to watch Night Flight and USA Up All Night (with Gilbert Gottfried) all the time or record their programs on VHS. How I managed to miss this one is beyond me. For years, I carried around VHS tapes of Night Flight New Wave music videos, featuring girls who had the same Farah haircut as the one in this movie. Finally dumped them.
I was a big fan of USA Up All Night as well. I watched both Gottfried and Shear, though I do think I leaned a bit more to Shear. That show was my first exposure to several movies that would go on to become all time favorites. I know it was the first time I ever saw Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama.

Hey I never heard of that movie, I guess I now have to add it on my watch list :) Interestingly enough, Marky Ramone covered the Gentry's "Keep On Dancing" (which itself was a cover).
Basically, I get charged up,cuz you Dig these movies so much. Most I’ve not seen… but your explanation, opinions and vibes, makes the videos you create more fun for me. Opinion expressed. Take care! Thanks!
Oh I’m so glad you’ve covered this movie. Channel 4 here in the UK showed it exactly once during their mid 1980s late night movie slot, when they still did such things. I remember staying up as a teenager to watch this and being amazed at the whole enterprise. I thought it hung together really well. I know what you mean about the sound track though. Did feel it broke the mood somewhat.
Perhaps its from being such a music buff, or even my many years as a musician, but scores are very important to me. I'm not sure I would say they can break a film, though I wouldn't not say that either, but they can certainly help make one. Orgy of the Dead, for example. The score is so good on that one, it takes it to a full other level for me.
@@AtomicSnackBar oh they are so important. The music teacher we had at school, when schools here still had those, once showed us how music adds to the mood of things. The chosen subject was the scene from Hammer's 'Dracula: Prince of Darkness' where Klove kills that British tourist and mixes his blood with Dracula's ashes and revives the count. In the first version he played the original James Bernard score for the scene, then he did it again using "Spider" Rich and Boots Randolph's 'Yakkty Sax' as the musical accompanyment. The effect was startlinng, what was horrific before was just stupid afterwards. So yeah havig music that does fit can at best distract and at worst break the mood forever.
@@AtomicSnackBar can you imagine the scene … the radioactive blob oozes up from the fissure in the earth, the little girl is lost, her mother frantic as the blob slithers ever closer to the unaware child and all the while Yakkty Sax is playing …. now that’s the true horror that X the Unkown was missing.
The original broadcast version for the movie is available (or it was last time I checked) on the Night Flight streaming platform so it is available with the library music and original effects.
Most excellent. I didn't realize the Night Flight streaming site was still around. Have you watched that version? I'm curious about the original music.
@@AtomicSnackBar It's all pretty familiar library cues and actually placed in with a measure of care, unlike the dvd release which is just wall to wall, then-newly recorded synth music IIRC.
I had both a Secret Sam and a James Bond briefcase. The parts got a bit co-mingled over the years, although I still have my Bond shell (not in very good shape, alas). I still have my 0-M Radio Rifle and parts of my Man from U.N.C.L.E. rifle set. It was great growing up with an uncle who owned a toy store!
@@AtomicSnackBar My grandfather opened the toy/bike/baby furniture store in the Hudson Valley in the 1930s. His son Jack (one of my uncles) worked with him and, along with his wife, ran it until about 1980. For years, it was the only place in the area where you could buy baby furniture and get your bike fixed, so every 1950s baby boomer (and their parents) bought stuff from their store. I always knew I was lucky to have an uncle with a toy store.
@@AtomicSnackBar I have worked with a number of toy and game inventors and, in about 1990, learned that one of our clients was the guy who created that James Bond briefcase toy. I got to thank him for all the pleasure it gave me over the years.

Let me tell you, I had to do some digging on this one. I had actually finished the episode when I ran across the tidbit about the director being the keyboard player for Black Oak Arkansas at one point. I had to go and edit that bit in later.
BOA was a fascinating tidbit. I was a big fan of the group and LOVED Ruby Star. Such a fantastic voice. As I said really impressed with your knowledge!
@@R0dan As a big music fan and pretty much a lifelong musician, it was nice to squeeze some music talk into an episode. It's been a long while. And I appreciate that, but it's all about the research.
Hey wassup Rob! Wow, this one sounds like a a cool as heck tribute to 50's classics. Tons of awesome trivia this time around as well! Major bonus points for that stopmotion creature. On a side-note, it's fitting I'm watching this vid on a Friday night and saw a 'Perfect Strangers' reference....a staple of the TGIF lineup. Next I'll be watching some reviews of 'Alien: Romulus' and if there's any references to Urkel, then we'll know the planets have aligned. 😁👍 Have a great weekend ahead dude!
Nice catch. I hadn't even considered the TGIF aspect of it. But man, I sure did like that show as a kid. Heck, TGIF was must-see-TV for me until the Jim Henson hour came along, then it was goodbye ABC.
I first saw part of the film in the 80s when I walked in on a tv in a bus station in the middle of the night (a great time to discover this movie) and couldn't understand what I was seeing. Was it a parody or a serious but bad film. I was able to eventually buy the dvd and see the entire movie. I'm pleased that it has a following and that you have dedicated an episode to it. Thank you.
That is one of the most perfect ways to discover this film. Heck, if it had been raining at the time, that would have almost been something out of a noir. Thanks for sharing, Stephen. I got a kick out of that.
HOW... Is it POSSIBLE... I am not familiar with this Flic!?! I LIVED on Nightlight as a kid, LOVED the TV Dinners Vid & as you are aware... I have a weakness for anything with the word 'Zombie' in the title! You have given me a homework assignment ASB!
I do think you might dig this one. It's quite impressive for what is essentially a student film. The title, though, is a hair misleading. Not really zombies. More so just mind-controlled.
I love the ZZ Top Tv Dinners video. Isn’t it funny that a place called Pleasantville existed before the film with Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon and Don Knotts? I guess the screenwriter for Pleasantville saw this movie. There are other 50’s inspired movies that are available. The Lost Skeleton Of Cadavra, directed by Larry Blamire. Alien Trespass, a U.S./Canadian production that was an inspired film. The Ripper(1985)-Tom Savini as Jack the Ripper, whose spirit dwells in a ring that he wore . If anyone wears the ring, Jack the Ripper’s spirit will possess the wearer. This was my first time ever seeing Tom Savini on screen as Jack the Ripper and his very detailed makeup effects work. The Ripper was filmed in Tulsa, Oklahoma and though it was set in the 80’s, it had a 50’s vibe.
Generally, my rule for the channel is nothing later than 1998. And even then, I try not to go past 1994. But I made an exception for The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. I'm a big fan of that one. I regret not picking up the sequel when I had the chance. I even had it in my shopping basket once at a music store and ended up putting it down for unknown, probably alien, reasons. Blamire has a book out about his character from both films. Been meaning to pick that up as well. I'm not familiar with The Ripper, but I am a Tom Savini fan. I've always thought he was a good actor.
Another fun watch, I've heard of this movie but that's it, thanks. I saw Night Flight in the 80s, I liked it. The Secret Sam kit/ briefcase: there's a couple of versions of this for adults with a real gun and survival kit for the forthcoming zombie apocalypse, you know.
I was a big fan of Night Flight in the 80s, especially later on when it started getting weird. The early episodes that I've seen were mostly just music videos. But eventually they started showing stuff like J-Men Forever, Dynaman(several years before Power Rangers), and Fantastic Planet.
@@AtomicSnackBarI've seen Fantastic Planet on TV, but I didn't catch it on Night Flight, alas, it's a movie I plan to buy someday. It's up there with Akira and Ghost in the Shell.

I wouldn't be surprised. It was pretty darn obscure. Had I not lucked out and caught it that once on Night Flight, I wouldn't know it existed even still. That's neat, though, that you were already familiar with the TV Dinners video. That was new to me.
I was just getting on here to let you know that it arrived safe and sound. Not sure what the delay was, but it most certainly wasn't anything you should apologize for. I really appreciate it, Larry. I watched J-Men Forever the other night and have already begun research for a future episode.
Lovely stuff, these tribute films can either way, I've seen a few very bad ones on Prime - but this one looks spiffy. Saw quite a good Lovecraft one, and there is quite a good film called something like The Haunting of Borely Rectory - there are at least 2 of them, one stars the great Jullian Sands - the other is a black and white film. This film looks good, the ZZ Top connection alone makes it worth a look. I found the film that I thought had disappeared - but I had it in my head it starred Ethan Hawke, when it was in fact Kevin Durand and the film was re-titled Monster Hunter - well worth a look, for a modern film - has a nice crypto feel with some folky vibes as well. Thanks again for a great vid, always a lovely start to my Saturday morning.
@ wetdog1606 - Ah, another H.P. Lovecraft fan. I knew you were a man of discerning tastes. Have you seen another low budgeter from the H.P. Lovecraft Society of Whisperer in Darkness. Really well done until the end. Then it seems to go south a bit. Also, the mid 60s Die Monster Die! with Boris Karloff and Nick Adams is an excellent, if not completely faithful version of Color Out of Space. Great visual effects in that one. Roger Corman's The Haunted Palace takes it's inspiration from Lovecraft as well. Vincent Price and the ever lovely Debra Padget are also enough to recommend that one. Of course, those are more legitimate studio films, but don't let that discourage you.
@@tonysantiago255 I do like Nick Adams - I think of him as the American Doug McLure. I think that Whisperer in the Darkness is the film I saw. I first got into Lovecraft when I borrowed cassettes from my local library - read by David MacCallum - they are here on TH-cam and really worth a listen - kind of a whole media that nobody bothers with; but radio horror/sci-fi really good stuff. Just to take the time and treat yourself to a spooky tale in the dark - it's nice to be good to yourself. I always thought that Julian Sands was the new horror legend - I especially like him in the Haunted Airman and Argento's Phantom of the Opera - I know it gets no love; but I really like it - 'Get behind me Satan', just fantastic.
It's a neat little film, especially for it being not much more than a student film. So it's very amateurish in parts, but it feels really sincere, thus adding to the charm. Now, if it's Whisperer in the Darkness from 2011 you are thinking of, that's actually a really good one and one of the few modern films I dug. Years back I actually did a Top Lovecraft films episode and that one made the list. I ended up taking it down, though.
@ wetdog1606 - Well. You've certainly brought up some solid recommendations. I've always liked David McCallum from his days on the Man From Uncle. And especially the classic Outer Limits episode where he evolved into a future man with a giant pointy eared monster. The only Julian Sands movie I've ever seen was Warlock, which I enjoyed him in. Haven't seen it in years though. And I always do some old school radio drama reading stuff around Halloween to get into the spooky season. The Tube has quite a few. I've even found a couple that were recorded on LPs from my childhood. Great fun.
And this is the movie that inspired the creation of Starbucks. Enjoyed the video, like always, and I loved the video for TV Dinners. Now, if you will excuse me, I have to get back to this book I am reading by a young author named Carody. I'm hoping it answer the question "What is Lucha Lana's bowling average?"
I'm not so sure about that one. Sounds like something only a truly demented mind would write. Might make your pets start judging you, as well. But if you insist, I hope you enjoy it. And I'm sure that wacky writer appreciates you reading it.
@@gregofthelake Yeah, I could certainly see how that would work with Karloff. But I'm really glad to hear you are digging it. When you finish, do let me know which was your favorite story.
One or two companies make an adult version of this with a real gun and "emergency" kit(first aid/ survival kit) in a case or pac, you know, just in case of a real zombie apocalypse.
Woah. That is one eye/ear catching title. Surprised I haven't heard about this one. Or if I did it the aliens have since wiped it from my recollection. I also love me some stop motion so very cool to see./hear about
Definitely eye/ear catching, even if it is a bit misleading. But I think you are 85% correct on this one. This is the most important student film that aliens don't want you to remember.
Possibly shouldn't be too surprised when I announce that I've never encountered this 'un before as it looks like it simply didn't make it out of the States. Shame as it looks like a loopy bit of fun.
@ AtomicSnackBar - I thought it was rather amusing that the enemy spy was a fat kid who couldn't run fast enough to catch the other kid with the briefcase. Probably never passed the JFK fitness standards in gym class. Then again, neither did I. The Tube will probably jail me for 'fat shaming'. Not sorry. Reeses.
@ AtomicSnackBar - It just occurred to me that the Tube being run by bluehairs, wouldn't care about possibly offending a male child, portly or no. So, no strike for me.
Very cool! Even though I was a loyal viewer of Night Flight, I don’t believe that I have ever seen this neat-o looking flick. Gotta love that claymation monster though!
A very cool toy with a very cool commercial. Heck, I'd like one right now for my top secret Snack Bar business.
Heard of it, but never seen it. It's on YT, so that will change. I remember that old "Secret Sam" commercial! 🙂

My mind is absolutely blown. I never knew that this existed, and I was a big fan of ZZ Top's TV Dinners video.
I was the reverse. I knew the film, but didn't know about the video until I started doing research for the episode. Really neat video.
@@TsiolkovskySportingLocks Yakkty Sax. The one thing Hammer has been missing all these years.
@@divergentthinkingproductions Yeah, like I mentioned in the video, this one could really use a bluray release with both versions.

@@AtomicSnackBar possibly one of the reasons that I watched it - not because you took it down - but because you recommended it.

@ awarningtothecuriouswerewolves - " Hm. I don't seem to see it here. There was supposed to be an article of an ornithological variety... "
@@tonysantiago255 -- Tony, are you suggesting my remarks are for the birds? Cheers Warren, an expert on our feathered friends, in other words, a Bird Brain!

The title could be a nod to the 1951 movie I Was a Communist for The F.B.I.
Sounds logical to me.
But was it wacky? Looks wacky to me. Always wanted a Secret Sam case. I still do. HA HA
Oh yeah. It's about three Secret Sam cases worth of wacky.
Do you remember me? You helped ID this film a few months ago & I had been looking for it for 40 years. Thanks again. So it is, or was a few months ago, available here on YT. Anyway, I sent you that link and would like to know if it's the original or the directors cut. Let me know if you need a link & I'll upload a copy on my channel. Thanks for this retrospective.
I certainly do. It was your comment that put the idea in my head of doing a retrospective on it. I'm glad you saw it.
As to which version, the only one I've seen floating around, and the one that is presently on YT, is the director's cut.
@AtomicSnackBar Man, oh man, how I'd like to see it original. But, I must say I do enjoy the directors cut.
Is there any chance you still have that VHS recording?
@@dwh5512 There is a slight chance it is in storage. But my storage is in a different state and it's been years since I've been back.
I've never heard of this movie. What's the best movie you ever saw and the worst movie you ever saw? The best movie I ever saw is Flesh Gordon and the worst movie is The Jar.
I thought that would be a hard question, but I really didn't have to think about it very long. My favorite movie would probably be either Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or Escape from the Planet of the Apes. Vampire Hunter D. is up there as well. As is Duel to the Death from 1983. Okay, maybe it's harder to narrow down than I thought.
Worst? Easy as well. But it's so bad I don't even want to speak its name publicly.
@ AtomicSnackBar - Well... finally found an opening to write: "El Topo!"
@@tonysantiago255 As funny as that would have been, El Topo wouldn't even crack the top five of worst movies I've ever seen.
@ AtomicSnackBar - And just like that, you have another potential category for a 'Top' list. Not the Best, but the Worst. Possibilities...
@@tonysantiago255 Your ne'er-do-wellness is showing again, Santiago.
Got to find this I need to check this out.Another awesome episode
Thanks, Craig. And if you can't find the DVD, it's here on YT at the moment.
