Those pancakes look so awesome. Will be looking to hit that place on my visit to Krakow later this summer. Also the underground theater. Great video here.
Piwnica Pod Baranami is an institution dating back to the 1950's. It used to be known for its political cabaret. I absolutely love all the restaurants and bars located in the cellars in Krakow.
Vid. 12 mim34 : Always suited and booted a hat and suit and brandishing fresh flowers, the bronze Piotr Skrzynecki is Vis a Vis bar's most loyal customer, so loyal that he exhibits total disregard for opening and closing times. Sitting out front at his own little bronze table - a favourite spot of the real flesh-and-blood Piotr Skrzynecki - this fella is just a few doors down from Piwnica Pod Baranami, the legendary literary and political cabaret he founded in 1956. Until his death in 1997, Skrzynecki was an essential component of the Cracovian - and Polish - art scene, directing films, screenwriting, acting as Piwnica Pod Baranami's conférencier, critiquing art, organising unusual cultural events. I could often saw him crossing rynek by Ratusz in his straw -boater hat - always smilied when greeted. I read practicly every book about Piwnica pod Baranami Jacek Wójcicki born and bread in Salwator - star of Piwnica pod Baranami is Ged's neigbour . Ged's fave shop Sekret smaku where he buys his pierogi, I noticed a poster advertising a concert with Jacek Wòjcicki in their bigger restaurant in Bociania Str. Ps. Just found out in the group starting Piwnica in 1956 with Piotr S. were students: World known later composer Krzysztof Penderecki & Bronisław Chromy - sculptor of the Dragon blowing fire by Wawel
Well done Poziomka! That's a real great history of the famous Piwnica Pod Baranami. Just one more famous artist worth mentioning and a great singer discovered by Piotr Skrzynecki was Anna Szalapak, a friend of mine, we went to the same high shool and sang in the school choir. Well, memories.😍😍😍
@@planetkrakow This would be an awesome video Ged, by all means do it! English Wikipedia has the article on 'Piwnica pod Baranami' and I would encourage you to read it. This place is absolutely legendary, all the biggest names of the Polish jazz and poetic cum cabaret song performed there, many of the biggest names of the Polish film (Wajda), literature (Miłosz, Mrożek), journalism (Turowicz), science (Vetulani), classical music (Penderecki!) were in one way or another involved in Piwnica pod Baranami. I still remember some performances shown on the Polish TV from Piwnica pod Baranami back in the seventies and for me, a young chap then in his late teens and early twenties these were formative events. And I remember Piotr Skrzynecki, the founder and animator of Piwnica pod Baranami, whose statue you saw at the entrance to Piwnica. It is also worth mentioning that Piwnica pod Baranami is part of the historic Pałac pod Baranami (Palace under the Rams) which dates back to the 14th century. Part of the palace was in 15th and 16th century home to one of the best known inns in Cracow, frequented by such giants of the Polish literature as Jan Kochanowski and Mikołaj Rej (if you don't know these names, then I can tell you that their significance for the Polish literature can be compared to the significance of William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe respectively for the English literature). The Palace changed ownership many times; it was owned by the representatives of the most important aristocratic families of historic Poland such as Ostrogski, Radziwiłł, Sanguszko, Wielopolski and Potocki. In my opinion this Palace and its 'Piwnica pod Baranami' is one of the most important historic and cultural landmarks of Poland. When you enter it, you breathe history. I noticed that you got the vibe immediately and realised that this place is not just yet another pub, but something far more important and sophisticated - and it really is.
