Most westerners don't understand the raw brutality and mass murder, torture and rape of civilians including women and children.
      This is just for history.
It is in no way glorifying imperial Japan or its deeds.
This is an American war reinactor, most perishable items got lost.
That is a rifle that every American soldier could get if stationed in Japan after the surrender.
The Japanese first used a weaker 6.5mm cartridge but when facing Chinese forces with 8mm Mauser rifles that where alot more powerful with a longer range they had to make a bigger 7.7mm cartridge and rifle.
Very few are in Japan apart from at the bottom of the sea.
The PLA also used this rifle and later converted it to 7.62x39 with a type 56 rifle barrel.
They used KMT 8mm Mauser rifles and machine guns.
      Captured Japanese weapons and tanks.
Some captured war aid given to the KMT from the US.
Then locally made M44 russian rifles.
Later on they made SKS and AK47 type rifles (type 56 rifle and type 56 assult rifle)
Today Chinese assult rifles use 5.8 that seems like it's better that 5.45 Soviet.
Not many Chinese produced rifles from WW2 made it to America.
The museums in Beijing have a large collection of Chinese weapons including one of the first semi automatic rifles invented by a Chinese General and some very rare items.
Only a few Hanyang Mauser rifles ended up in the USA.
Russia took most of Manchuria from China and in some decades a russian war with China is more likely.

fun fact: Japanese riflemen carried so many rounds on them because many of their machine guns, like the type 99 and the type 92, used the same caliber of ammo in order to make ammunition production more efficient. That way, Japanese infantry could readily supply their own machine gunners out in the field no matter the situation.

Firstly: 90 rounds was not an excessive basic load for an infantryman by WW2 (or any) standards. The average US Marine in WW2 was generally carrying about twice that, in practice. Furthermore: notwithstanding the limitations of the issued load-carrying system, ammo supply represented a major logistical problem for the IJA throughout its history. This was reflected in a variety of practices. For example, the regular resort of Jukendo drills in infantry regiments, as well as the long design of the type 38 rifle (optimised as a close-combat weapon and NOT, as certain commentators have posited, a means of improving accuracy or compensating for allegedly poor metallurgy); part of the reason why the IJA favored to launch bayonet attacks with 'nothing up the spout' was also a reflection of this issue (despite the internal propaganda about 'inherent fighting spirit', etc). Japanese doctrine relating to the tactical use of automatic weapons in general was also quite distinct from that of Western nations; doctrinally, the Japanese applied machine gun fire more as a softening effect, rather than a means of suppression. Again, there is an emphasis on the conservation of ammunition (albeit, this approach was likely superceded by the realities of combat). So no, Japanese soldiers were not issued more ammunition when compared to other nations.
Secondly: the Type 96 LMG did NOT use a hopper system; this was an innovation specific to the Type 11, which was the first LMG issued to the IJA. And while it had indeed been the intention that the hopper system would allow the riflemen to use the same ammunition as the LMG, in operational reality the ammunition issued to the Type 11 was different from that issued to the riflemen because the relatively slow-burning powder optimised for the Type 38 rifle produced excessive flash when used in the Type 11. Interestingly, the Type 11 gunner WAS issued with enlarged cartridge pouches, as well as a belt harness in order to carry the extra weight - something distinctively lacking in Japanese field equipment but prevalent with most opposing armies. In any case, the hopper system was considered a failure because it permitted the excessive ingress of foreign matter into the weapon's action, which caused frequent stoppages. The succeeding Type 96 would feed from a detachable box magazine, similar to a ZB26 or a Vickers-Berthier. The Type 96 did use the 6.5mm synonymous with the Type 38 rifle family, while the Type 99 LMG used the 7.7mm round synonymous with the Type 99 rifle, so that in both cases the riflemen could, in theory, contribute to ammunition of the gunner - this had more to do with the simplification of logistics and was common practice in most modern armies. Both weapons persisted in service through to the conclusion of WW2, as did both the Type 38 and Type 99 rifles. The Type 11, although generally thought of as unpopular with Japanese troops and intended to have been phaesd out, would also persist through to the end of the war and find its way to service in Malaya, Vietnam and Korea.

The two front pouches each carried two cardboard packs. Each pack carried three stripper clips of five rounds each. So each front pouch had 30 rounds (in 6 clips) for 60 rounds up front. The rear pouch held four boxes, so 12 clips of 5 for 60 rounds in the read pouch = 120 rounds in total.

I knew a guy who ran with a lightened load of 4 mags total on him in Afghanistan to save weight. His personal rationalization was "By the time I've burned through the first magazine, either the jets or artillery were turning the enemy position into a new crater.", so I suppose it worked out well in his case. But I've heard stories of so many guys running out of ammo in a firefight because they had a light load that I'd always take a minimum of 6+1 standard load but preferably a heavier load of 10 or more magazines. Call it paranoia but a little paranoia has saved a lot of lives.

Standard issue, model 30 (1897) rear ammunition pouch as used by the Japanese Imperial Army throughout the World War Two. Pouch is approximately 6.75 inches long x 3.00 inches wide x 3.75 inches tall. Thick brown leather is in overall good condition with only light surface dirt from age, storage and use. All the seams are tight.
The stitched hinge top flap is secured by passing its leather tongue through a horizontal closure strap on the front of the box. Below the closure strap the tongue fastens to a brass finial which fits through a hole punched in the tongue. The underside of the top flap has markings done in kanji.
The interior of the box has dual pockets separated by a thick leather divider running front to back at center. The box would have held sixty rounds of 7.7mm ammunition. The bottom of each interior compartment has an oblong hole allowing for the passage of air and moisture.
The back of the box has two belt loops which are again, made of thick leather and riveted to the box. Loops are in excellent condition.
Attached to one end of the box is a japanned tin oil can with screw top. This is held to the box by two horizontal and one vertical strap. The vertical strap is punched with a hole that fits a finial on the lid of the can helping to hold it in place. The oil can itself is in good condition with some wear to the japanned surface. The worn areas do show some light surface dirt. The lid unscrews and becomes the handle of an oiling rod which still holds a cloth patch.
This is a very nice and complete example of a rare World War Two Japanese item. 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🈲🈲🈹🈹🈵🈵㊙️㊗️🈵㊗️🈲🈹🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵

The WWI and early Soviet Mosin nagant ammo pouches are a similar arrangement with the cover hinge at the front. The good thing about that is that if you hit the dirt and the cover isn’t latched for some reason, you will jam it closed. As opposed to a normal flap that will get forced open spilling ammunition. The Soviets also (in theory) kept their reserve ammunition in a pouch on the back. The last 15 rounds were not to be fired without orders from the squad or platoon leader.

I have a authentic Vietnamese ammo vest. One of my buddies dad's brought it back from the war. We went shooting one day, I brought a couple of my SKS, and ak 47s for him to shoot. He called me the next day, told me to stop by the house. He handed it to me and told me to take care of it for him. Said he hadn't had that much fun in years. It holds over 260 rounds on stripper clips. That's a good bit of ammo to carry around.

You seem to forget Iwo Jima was one of the least supplied islands yet the Japs were under a good general who refused to use Banzai charges, and they massacred the US troops until theyre supplies ran out.
