In an interview Prunella Scales said that when she first met Cleese for the part of Sybil she asked him first thing, “Why did these two people get married?” She said Cleese buried his face in his hands and said he hoped nobody would ask that. 🤣🤣🤣 Between the two of them they worked up a backstory for Basil and Sibyl that informed how they played them. She decided that Sibyl was of a lower social class than Basil (if you have an ear for it, Scales lets slip a number of verbal clues that suggest this, especially when Sibyl’s a bit tipsy) and that aspirational thing that existed in England in the mid 20th century would explain why she was initially attracted to him. She figures she was a brassy, saucy barmaid who worked in her dad’s pub and Basil caught her eye after being demobbed. Maybe she first saw him in uniform, maybe he cut a dashing figure in his 20s. He would have had a bit of cash after his national service and she got her hooks into him with the idea that they’d start up a hotel together. She’d run the place and he would add a veneer of class and sophistication, which made sense in that industry then and to some extent now. Kinda neat how some actors fill in the gaps in the script so they can create a more well rounded portrayal. Usually they don’t share any of this, the work is done just for themselves, but when asked they often come out with things that surprise and delight the original writer of the thing.

For most Brits, nothing sums up British comedy than the vision of Basil giving his car a good thrashing! Is there anything in American Comedy history with the same cultural reference? If you look really closely, you can see one of the home-owners come to the front door to watch the action!
Well as a Canadian, me and my family love it. My dad saw it on a broadcast in the 80's and he introduced it to my mom, then me and my brother when we were kids. So personally, I grew up with it and watched it so often I can quote full episodes 😂
American family here. My brother and I were introduced to it by my parents. We had the entire collection on VHS, and I wore those things out! I pretty much watched an episode or two weekly.
I saw these on first release in the 70s. Our reaction was much the same as yours, millions of us were in tears. It was incomparably the funniest sitcom we’d ever seen. Cleese and Connie Booth (Polly) co-wrote it. They were married at the time. That didn’t last, but their series certainly has.
As soon as you said you'd be reacting to Fawlty Towers I immediately wondered how you'd react to Basil bashing his car with a tree branch 🤣 One of the funniest things I've ever seen. Apparently during filming they tried with branches off all sorts of different trees before settling on the one, which IIRC is from a Willow tree. Simply because it looked funnier than any of the others.
Approximately 35 years after I saw it the first time, Basil thrashing the car may still be the funniest scene I've ever seen. It might be the funniest thing ever put on screen. It can't exist in isolation; it's not as funny as just a clip: you have to have the whole context of the episode in order to appreciate the fullness of it: bad luck + inevitability, Herculean efforts + pettiness, anger issues + an inanimate object, ... it's perfection.

But taken in context of the whole episode, it made me laugh so hard the first time I saw it, I literally almost passed out. My poor wife got the hiccups from laughing so hard. This show is just so awesome, and Cleese & Co are pure genius.
The car being hit with the tree branch is iconic. Cleese did an advert for Specsavers a few years ago recreating it, but he attacks a similar looking police car instead of his xD

Joke about the salad cream is that it is often seen as a low-grade inexpensive substitute for mayonnaise that comes out of a squeeze bottle, not normally served in higher-grade restaurants or hotels. So the scene reflected the bad tastes of the lower-class boy even after presented with a better version in the mayonnaise
That car scene with the tree branch is one of my favourite reaction bits ever! Rick just couldn't contain himself anymore, absolutely hilarious. I'm sure this ends up in a compilation.

During the summer of 1975 our neighbour's son went to the studio recording of this episode. Obviously I knew Cleese but had no idea this was to be his new series. Did my head in when I read that somewhere. Is it true? I’ve heard that is incorrect and he just had the same name, but I could never nail it down - not that I tried that hard, I’d prefer if it was the same guy. 😊
One thing I like that I rarely see addressed, which I guess shows how successful they are at it, is that the fact that Kurt is gay is treated completely matter of factly by everyone. For a fifty year old show that's pretty progressive.
I love the part with the branch and Eric's utter delight at it will never not make me laugh! *Edit* I know this is an older post as it has been up for four weeks already but the description above says episode 2 instead of 5. Feeling like a nitpicker but it's also just a bit hopeful because it'd mean there's still so much more of the first season to come, even though next week is the last episode before they move on to season 2.
As someone whos family uses alot of Saladcream here in England, I'd describe it to you as, a similar condiment to Mayo, but much much more lighter in texture & taste. Yes it can be used on salads as the name would suggest, but really its main use over the years has become one to use on sandwiches with meat, it also goes great on potatoes.
@@ftumschkYou realise eggs have existed before and since mayonnaise right? Just because it uses eggs yolks as well, as countless other things across time have doesn't make it mayonnaise.
Did you know that the insperation for fawlty towers , and basil fawlty where inspired by hotel glenn eagles in torque this hotel is mentioned ones in the first few episodes . The owner of this hotel was Donald Sinclair . In the movie ratrace ( 2001 ) John Cleese played the Hotel /casino owner , Donald Sinclair . Fun little connections to fawlty Towers .
You guys have got to react The Vicar of Dibley after this. From what I recall, it's Britain's next favourite sitcom after Fawlty Towers and Only Fools and Horses.
About Basil not saying the Twitchen last name, I always assumed that he was so thrown off by the man's nervous twitch that he actually forgot the name, not that he was afraid to say it. He even forgot his own name earlier on in the episode didn't he?

Did my head in when I read that somewhere. Is it true? I’ve heard that is incorrect and he just had the same name, but I could never nail it down - not that I tried that hard, I’d prefer if it was the same guy. 😊
If you thought this episode was a perfect storm of chaos and desperation, just wait: there's an even more perfect one coming.
The Germans? For me Communication Problems is the best.
@Swoooze the psychiatrist is pretty chaotic but communication problems is my favourite too
I wonder if they have the uncut version.
One thing I like that I rarely see addressed, which I guess shows how successful they are at it, is that the fact that Kurt is gay is treated completely matter of factly by everyone. For a fifty year old show that's pretty progressive.
Agreed. Refreshing!
John Cleese admitted this place and owner were in fact REAL!
I would put Basil thrashing his car with a giant tree branch scene in my top 10 favorite comedy routines.
I love the part with the branch and Eric's utter delight at it will never not make me laugh!
*Edit*
I know this is an older post as it has been up for four weeks already but the description above says episode 2 instead of 5.
Feeling like a nitpicker but it's also just a bit hopeful because it'd mean there's still so much more of the first season to come, even though next week is the last episode before they move on to season 2.
One of my all time favourites.
As of 2023 John Cleese is developing a sequel series of Fawlty Towers!
IMHO Basil flogging the car is the best moment in all of comedy, ever.
I'd describe salad cream as a cross between mayo and a vinegarette, if that makes sense.
It's basically mayonnaise mixed with vinegar.
@@ftumschkYou realise eggs have existed before and since mayonnaise right? Just because it uses eggs yolks as well, as countless other things across time have doesn't make it mayonnaise.
@@wyterabitt2149 Well, Mayonnaise existed before salad cream, so I really don't see what your point is.
Basil hitting the car must be one of the funniest sceens ever. 😁😁
Love this episode!!! The actor who played the Colonel in this was also in a few shows with Tommy Cooper.
These Fawlty Towers reactions are your best yet. 😂 After FT you should definitely do Only Fools and Horses
I remember watching this live on bbc when it aired… i think the entire UK laughed out loud for hours when Basil thrashed his car
Salad cream is beautiful that’s what it is
Agreed. Unfortunately I can't have it in the cupboard coz my other half only has to look at a bottle and wretches! 😳😅
My fave episode! That branch was the best slapstick I've ever seen.
Note the perfect size of the tree branch too.
Based in French Farce ( high energy fast comedy ) superbly played and eternally funny ! Great reactions all 👍🏻👍🏻😎❤️
Salad cream is imitation mayonnaise, in the same way that American cheese is imitation cheese...
I don’t think you’ve all ever laughed so much at anything. Just goes to show why this show is such a classic.
The scene of Basil giving the car "a Good Thrashing!" Is perhaps the FUNNIEST SINGLE SCENE OF ANY SIT-COM OF ALL TIME!
You want proof?
Have you EVER LAUGHED as HARD at anything else in your entire TV viewing life? WELL?
I thought so!
Case Closed!
