As you, and another comment pointed out, the games are different: FT is large ships, SD is small fighters. My gripe with SD (and it's been YEARS since I played), it that every game seemed pretty much the same: both sides close, fire "missiles" (or torpedoes or whatever SD calls them) just before the merge, and then there's a brief furball by the survivors, and it's over. My experience with FT is there is much more variability with the games. Frankly my biggest gripe with FT is with Ground Zero Games (GZG) itself - specifically their website. Sure, I know it's a small "mom & pop" operation, but the lack of photos on the website, especially in this day and age, is ridiculous. As an example, I've got a couple of FT fleets (NAC and Kra'Vak), but have fairly recently started playing more sci fi skirmish ground combat. I'd like to have some more alien figures, but there are so few pics of the alien races on the GZG site, that I've just decided that's not the way I'm going to go. Too bad for them.
Full Thrust for me has the most variability and is free to download. There are a boatload of miniatures you can use. I love the fleet actions you can fight and campaigns you can simulate.
For me, Full Thrust is the clear winner of my time; huge choice of ships, weapons, and simple, easy to learn rules. Plus you can always design your own ships. What's not to love?

Hello, Rob, here is your pal from Poland. I am happy to report here in Poland that Portal Games released the Polish edition of Full Thurst around 2004 or 2005. I love that game. Vote for FT! :)
Full Thrust is great. Love it. Silent Death is more detailed and can really suck you in with far more RPG flavor that is OPTIONAL. Silent Death has ALOT more chrome, most of which is optional. Many people have commented that FT has a ship design system but so does Silent Death, and SD has alot more options. Heck, just design your starfighter, relabel pilot and gunnery bonuses as ECM and Fire Control, and you can call it a cruiser or deathstar. SD has a pretty unique combat resolution system. Once you test it out, it feels extraordinarily elegant. My deceased wife and I played a LOT of games and game systems for almost 3 decades. Silent Death was in the top three, along with SFB. I have to say FT was NOT in the top ten.

Silent Death is fighter combat on a hex map, Full thrust is big ships on a "free" tabletop, but honestly the biggest real diffrence there is that FT ships are more ponderous and SD ships typically have less weapons and tighter fire arcs. SD has no ship design rules, for FT they are core. Both games have their breaking points, neither handles missile spam very well. Caveat emptor: If you want to try FT, you really NEED to get Fleet Book 1 -- it's essentially a second edition of the rules, much cleaner and better.
I still prefer SD over aerospace. Trying to combine aerospace with land units is a pain. When it comes to air combat though, nothing beats Top Gun from Fasa. The movement system borrowed from Blue Max is basically X wing/Attack wing with hex based movement instead of freeform.
Full Thrust for me, for its capital ship combat. I have the Silent Death deluxe box: nice. Another one I tried was Interceptor (fighter combat) by FASA., who also did Leviathan (capital ship combat).
I bought into Silent Death after watching your video and then the pandemic hit. So I have not had a chance to get a game in. At least all my ships are painted.

What I liked about Full Thrust was that you can design your own ships and use what ever spaceship minis you'd like as long as the scale is the same.
