- We traveled out to the Mojave Desert to roleplay the end of the world with four thousand other people at Wasteland Weekend. At first glance, this looks like a Mad Max fan festival (and it sort of is), but it's also so much more than that.

"Deadline" is such a fantastic name for a wasteland newspaper seller that I'm genuinely shocked I haven't seen it until now
muckraker too if you know american history

Sadly history is written by the Victors and the wealthy😢
Muckraker was an equally brilliant name for a journalist player.
@@Ashtarte3D can you explain to my why?
Deadline here! We’d be glad to have Muckraker on permanently at The Wastelander. Too many of our reporters wander blithely into war zones for the sake of a few bottle caps. Ipso facto, we need more reporters willing to do so.
HAHA! I just texted this to you.
Gods, if I make it to Wastleland, I'll come write. I've never seen an editor so interested in paying his writers since I started in journalism!
Generous man, love the stuff you guys do. LOOKS INCREDIBLY FUN!
love it
I legit want to try my hand at small time reporting if I chose to go here.
Hey, Smiles from the Faceless Merchants here! You didn't actually cheat by forging a signature (well, technically you did); there's supposed to be a sign out front of the camps we send you to if they're not available for trading, so you're (kinda) good! Give your self back a morality point Carrion!
And yeah, the whole point of the merchant quest is to help newcomers get involved with the Wasteland experience! I'm real happy it worked so well for you!
I hope to see you both next year!
P.S. There is a system for the trade route, but getting Wastelanders to do anything more complicated than drink and yell is like herding cats.
Oh interesting. This makes me more excited to come. Four more years till I'm actually old enough!

"We get all the blood bags and steering wheels we can eat" had me in stitches. This is just post apocalyptic LARPing on a big scale and I love it.
The funky thing about the LARPing is that it's a gradient from "in costume with a funny name, but otherwise yourself" all the way to "basically doesn't break character outside of certain trusted campmates the entire weekend" and no one really bats an eyelash either way -- I've seen conversations where people doing either extreme end up talking to each other and it flows more often than you'd guess
My wife made the Fuck Off fan that you bartered for at the Public Eye! Excellent video.
That shit was mad funny
Having that fan is a good find actually.
Wish you and your wife nothing but the best 💕

Preacher of the Rustorationists here, absolutely a delight having you visit our little corner of the post-apocalypse.
Hello!! Thank you so much for letting us film the dirt baptism. If you’re wondering why we didn’t use your audio in the video, it was one of the only technical errors we had during the trip and I am GUTTED about that. -Chris

"He's not a war boy he's a newsboy"
"He's precious"
"He is a little war brother"

Artisan Tybs here! I'm so happy you had a good time. That was my first year too, so us bumbling around as baby wastelanders was a lot of fun. Thank you for participating in shenanigans, muckracker has a future in being a art model! And thank you for accepting the name Carrion /Carry-on/. Genuinely it was a joke that was too good to pass up, but i knew you really wanted a crow. i kept that in mind for the patch. Even though it was hastely made it fills my heart you accepted this gift.
Please continue doing what you do, and i hope we meet again!
Keep calm and carrion!

I'm a sucker for it, but there's no world where I don't tear up at the dedication and passion for events like these. I took a big swing this year and went to an event like this for the first time which was crazy for me. There's no understating how kind and how much genuine care is found in people connecting with each other at events like these. Wasteland, I'm coming for you next year. Also extremely fun climbing the Thunderdome with Carry-On on Saturday night. Y'all are quality folks, hoping to meet you out on the sands of the Wasteland again (edit: the solo shot of me standing in the wind with my kufiyeh scarf up is awesome, literally the one of the first pieces of B-roll in the video!)
You were all so warm and kind and wonderful! Thank you so, so much for putting up with us. The Boltcutters were my personal highlight of the whole event. -Chris
While I'm here, my own philosophy on Wasteland Weekend is basically: It's an immersive event, somewhere between a LARP and a (p)re-enactment event with a hearty dash of desert festival, and so a lot of the best Wastelanders really are the folks who are willing to collaborate with each other and make a bigger bolder future. The Wasteland is not kind to people who are into more toxic flavors of rugged individualism!
@@gregorysteffensen3279I love that, this whole thing is so cool
@@gregorysteffensen3279that's such a beautiful ethos. That's honestly the kind of thing a lot of people need, though more attuned to their specific flavour of weird - the ability to play, be immersed in a simulated world, opportunities to build genuinely close-knit communities of like-minded people.
I hope I can attend Wasteland Weekend someday, or to see something similar like it pop up around my part of the world
@@gregorysteffensen3279"(p)re-enactment" is what sold me. Excellent wording!

@@Thesavagesouls You clearly don't get the point lol. This isn't about day to day survival, it's about what life might be like if modern society broke down or if we hadn't made up a bunch of rules and regulations.

I love parsing language. Words are a vasal to convey meaning. If you aren't literate to parse that meaning, it can be misconstrued. That's why a "fuck you" can be received as a polite invitation or an offensive derogatory curse. The very encouragement of looking at context and meaning is boon to society, and encourages a " benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise" perspective that I value greatly.
Hearing that its a bunch of queer and neurodivergent people wasnt really that surprising but also warmed my heart to hear regardless. Would love to come some day, but unfortunately im entering college on the opposite side of the country

Zinc oxide is absorbed in small quantities through the skin. So covering your whole body with a lot of it might not be the best idea. Titan dioxide on the other hand isn't toxic and even whiter than zinc oxide. It is also called titanium white and can be baught as pure pigment for cheap.
I guess the extra zinc might come in handy if he catches a cold/flu off someone though, hah. But yeah, titania's the ticket here. Regulators got a bit freaked out about it recently because of some shitty science, but it's basically biologically inert.
@@Ithirahad "Should we go get Sarah so she can play Titania?"

Next year will be my 10th year attending Wasteland Weekend. It honestly changed my life, has inspired and driven me as an artist and I've met so many incredible people - it's more meaningful than any other holiday. I love that you had such a great experience (that you were able to share) and hope to see you at Neotropolis!🤩
Are you worried that now that hte internet has found it, it'll be overwhelmed? California City is very small (I lived there so that's how I found it) and has one hotel, I imagine it won't take much to ruin this event with a nerd pilgrimage.
@@fnhatic6694 Not really that worried about this. I do expect an influx of new people coming after the new Furiosa movie hype (the same happened after Fury Road came out) - but we always want new people coming in - not everyone sticks around forever either. The bar is set somewhat high in comparison to cons or other nerd events and I do think it remains intimidating for many . I don't think the appeal would ever reach Burning Man levels - it's still a niche. Instead I would just expect more events like this to be created for many little niches, which would also be cool. Time will tell :)
@@ArtisanAlli Hopefully. I only found out about it because of the sign they put on the highway that would say "Event ->>" and I was like 'what in the fuck there's nothing out there, it's just desert'. So I just drove out there and couldn't figure out why all the cars were like Mad Max vehicles. Then I got up there and, of course, Lord Humungus or something wanders up like "are you lost?" and I admit I was. The next year I put on a little costume that was more fallouty than anything and wandered around a bit but had no idea what was going on. Took some fun pictures and left.
I'm in Vegas now so it's still pretty close, maybe I'll dive in deeper this year.
A missed opportunity to not have the patch say "Keep Calm and Carrion"
I kinda liked that "Live on Carrion" can be read as "keep living, Carrion," or "Live on, carry on," or "subsist on scavenged food," or as a play on "Live on Camera." It's got layers.
"Carrion" should just be his first name. A last name would give him some dignity. How about "Regardless?"
The hilarious cut to Chris shirtless in war boy paint and then he decides to role play as something he already does 10/10
To those involved in this event, wow. I personally wouldn't do this yearly but it seems like so much fun. I can see the effort that goes into making those cars, the tents, questing. Like the guy who runs the newspaper stand knows he wont get many people engaging with him but he still commits. Really well done.
This has been on my bucket list for awhile. I don't even care if I'm in my 70s, I will experience this before I die!

Sympathy for Chris, but "metal fume fever" absolutely made this video for me
I heard that story the day after and absolutely bust out laughing (in a friendly way, cheers to Muckraker for rolling with it) -- it was truly the most Wasteland thing I've ever heard
I showed our welding instructor at work this video, and as soon as she saw the zinc oxide she was like, "OH NOOOO I KNOW WHERE THIS IS GOING." She said the zinc shakes are no joke, and that's why we don't allow welding galvanized steel here.
The _instant_ I saw the bag of zinc I yelled "NOOOOO METAL FLU" 😂 My brother worked in a metal shop for a while and he got it from being too close to the (improperly ventilated) laser cutter for too long

Lots of ex-Burners (including my campmate Shade who made the Warboy Union pamphlet) at WW, and there's a fair bit of overlap in stuff like low-cost windproof set building, even if it's a fair bit less of a Burn event than it superficially looks like
@@Jamjosh Have you been to burning man? it's an arts festival, not a mad max renaissance fair. There's also no bartering. Both BM and WW are amazing events.

I'm Buttons of Hobo JunXion and now I have a another video to show all the people who don't know or understand what Wasteland is.
I hope to catch you in person in the future and possibly throw my bacon pancakes at you as a thank you.

@@GALL0WSHUM0R I've tried responding to you and linking the video but I've come back a few times and I see the response is gone so I think the people who post the video don't want me linking to outside videos
@@jeannebuttons5301 Yeah, I think links get filtered sometimes. If you can tell me the title of the video and/or name of the channel though, I can look it up :)
@@GALL0WSHUM0R it''s called "Wasteland Weekend: A Roadside Attraction" by Mel Films
nah, that's youtube itself's fault. links are a no-no. easier to make a playlist and tell people to look there @@jeannebuttons5301
HUMANITY IS INHERENTLY KIND AND THIS CONTINUES TO PROVE IT 🥺
"Hah moss:" Hold my beer... er...RPG
Please go again and show us more of your storylines. This is so amazing and fun, these people seem so cool!
Couldn't be happier that a place like this exists, what an excellent video.
Muckraker talking about collective action is the funniest thing I've seen in weeks
I gave a ride to Muckraker 36:08. It's great to see their video up. And kinda cool to see my car in it. Hope to see you guys again next year.
One of the most engaging videos i've seen in a while. Nice to see communities like this band together even though its just a short event.
This is amazing. I am a huge Mad Max fan so this has officially gone to top of my bucket list
Shit, I may now be making some questionable financial decisions for next September thanks to this video. This looks like so much fun!
As someone who attended for the first time in 2023. Very much recommend it. Life changing experience. If I could give one tip. It would be to let people know you are a first year. Usually they will try to go out of their way to let you in on activities and get you involved. Along with some camps and people will give you things to say, help you start bartering, or add to you costume/outfit.
Ngl…me too 👀 I wonder if they’ll see an influx of international visitors next year
I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. You have no idea how badly I want to make those same decisions and join this beautiful, crazy thing next year.
I live in the netherlands and i think i really want to go here now and just explore! I want to "play" as a wandering dealer that plays games with strangers and builds a reputation as the shaman of luck. I honestly think im going to now save up to go here alone and live out what looks like the most fun time of a life time. Thank you for this video cause its making me really excited
One of my campmates comes from NL every year she can afford to -- long trip, but well worth it!
This looks amazing! I'm so glad that this exists, I hope one day I can see it for myself
Thank you for sharing this video and showing such a wholesome community!
Glad to know I won you some money, congrats and welcome to the waste.#DHA from #DukesoftheNuke Co Warchief
