10 Years later and this review never gets old, this game is amazing
What's also ironic is that melons can also be used to brew beer as well. I also like how Stage 15 on Super Pac-Man is a maze full of Galboss, aka Galaxian Flagships. It's funny how on most Namco games that everytime they make a cameo as a bonus item, it's food related. Like on most of the Dig Dug games, where they appear as "Vegetables".
There are actually official versions on the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS.

I have Super Pac-Man on my Pac-Man Museum game for my PS3 and I love it. Super Pac-Man is also playable on Ms. Pac-Man: Special Color Edition for the Game Boy Color and the Namco Museum series.
They're supposed to be melons, not hops.
Namco regards _this_ title as the true sequel to _Pac-Man_. Midway created _Ms. Pac-Man_, _Pac-Man Plus_, _Baby Pac-Man_, _Jr. Pac-Man_ and the rather oddball _Professor Pac-Man_ all without Namco's consent (and thus ending the relationship between Namco and Midway in 1984) and, except for _Ms. Pac-Man_, have not been acknowledged as canon to the Pac-Man universe.

But Pac-Jr, Pac-Baby, and Professor Pac all appear in later official games. Even Chomp Chomp, Pac-Man's dog from the cartoon, appears in later official games.
Super Pac was played a few times on the early 80s arcade gameshow "Starcade".
A prototype for the 5200 was found and released by AtariAge several years ago. There's also a homebrew for the 7800. Bother are very good versions.
Ken Wheeler We had Super Pac-Man (5200 rip) on Atari 8-bit back in the 1980s. A really great version that wasn"t released due to the market crash.

In level 10, I believe those are Japanese musk melons. As for Super Pac-Man's not being commercially successful, that might owe in fact to the presence of Ms. Pac-Man, which was not the official sequel, and to this day Namco does not acknowledge it in most compilations. Midway took the idea for Crazy Otto and turned it into Ms. Pac-Man, then turned the rights to Ms. Pac-Man over to Namco, and it wasn't the last time they abused the Pac-Man license. Once Pac-Land was out, Midway lost the license.
I have a full upright Super Pacman machine in my dining room. Such an under-rated game. I'm really excited that you did a review of this game that nobody seems to care about. I care, and I really appreciate the Vectrex reviews you do too, love my Vectrex.

I remember having 1 of those plug and play systems, and I used to play Super Pac-Man on it a lot. Super Pac-Man is awesome and fun. 👏🏻

One really great tip with Super Pac-Man is that when you are super sized, eating the power pellets resets the super timer, so you can stay big, and combined with super speed (and perfect reflexes), you can clean up the maze _VERY_ quickly.
Anyway have you heard of Pac Hero? It's like Pac Man but a fun 'superhero' version !!
This game is actually also a part of this cool little Pac-Man arcade console thingy that I found at a store once, which came with 4 Pac-Man titles. It's the only reason I actually know about this game.

I remember playing this game at my local arcade back in the 80's, my small community did indeed have an arcade, and I think that was the only place where I ever had a chance to play it. I don't think I've ever seen the machine ever again.
I actually once found this game in the wild. 1990-something. Between the power pellets, SUPER pellets, speed and fewer 'dots', I literally grew bored past the half hour mark on the first quarter.

I totally agree that Super Pacman is under rated. There was an arcade machine at a pizza parlor where I grew up and I loved playing it.
The Namco Pac Man Tournament app for Android currently has a Google/Android themed tournament, where the bonus "fruit" are all the different versions of Android, i.e. cupcake, donut, eclair, froyo, gingerbread, honeycomb, ice cream sandwich, and jelly bean. This tournament has bonus rounds that remind me very much of the bonus rounds in Super Pac Man.
Anyway, Super Pac Man is a favourite of mine. I have very fond memories of this one from bitd. :)
This game was in a Ms Pacman Collection on Gameboy Color, I played it when I was a teen. Pretty fun game.
My favorite Pac-Man game of all. I've never had the privilege of seeing the actual arcade cabinet of it though. I've only played it various home consoles and the Game Boy Color.
They're melons, the t-shaped stem is an art icon of making elaborate and good-looking fruit as a tradition for gifts in Japan.

Actually, I remember this game by the Game Boy Color Port. It was on Ms. Pac Man Special Color Edition and I used to play both games all the time. I also doesn't understand why it's not as popular.

Pac-Man Jr. is the one where the screen is about 3X the width and across right and left as you play in the arcades.
I had this game for my Atari 800XL home computer. It was to be released for the Atari 5200 & the XL/XE computers, but never happened. It got leaked into "the wild".
I'm actually more familiar with the Gameboy Color version. Looking at the arcade version, it's pretty damn close to the original.
I'm a long time fan of CGR and the squirrel means something to us. fans CGR is nothing without the squirrel.
I used to have this game on a plug n play when i was in the first grade and it was always my favorite Pacman game ^-^ God i miss this game
Super pacman was on the atari 7800 and i think commodor, I used to own this cab and i miss it now.

Yeah this is a great game. Nice strategy involved to maximise your scoring. The only problem I have is that it hurts my hand after playing a couple of games. When you become Super, the joystick really needs to be jammed around hard to go where you want.
Loved the woo's! You should include more shots of you playing the games rather then just the footage of the game.

FunFact: this game was featured in the tournament finale at the end of the 1983 movie Joysticks, a titty comedy that heavily leeched off the arcade craze at the time, but also unfortunately came when the 1983 console market was crashed. It's a terrible movie, but if you happen to like terrible movies and want some T&A with your Super Pac Man then give it a looksee. :D
Probably the only Pac-Man game I'm actually good at. I scored over 300,000 at my local barcade once. I was about 20,000 points away from beating the current record there.
Oh my god people tell me I'm crazy because I remember this as one of the first arcade games I ever played and I could never find a pac-man where he became big and shattered walls. Thank you!
That thing looks like the savegame icon for Dead Or Alive 2 on the PS2. That round stuff with a stem on top. It must be some kind of exotic fruit. Osage Orange, maybe?
I had never heard of the or played the game up until last year when i went to a bar called Recess they have various arcade machines there but one particular arcade machine had about 20 games in it to choose from and Super Pac-Man was one of them. I thought it was weird and cool that it was different from regular pac-man
Mark should really try out Pac-Man Championship Edition DX on Xbox Live Arcade (not sure if he has already, if not he should) It's still one of my favorite Xbox Arcade games. Wish Sony would get their hands on it and put in on the PlayStation Store for the Vita. It would work so well for the PS Vita, ideal for an handheld.
it seems like they wanted to do the key and door thing with the original pac-man because of the key and lock being in the original pac-man bonus items, and that this game is the realization of that concept.

There was a version of this on the Ms. pac man game boy color game. That's the only place I have heard of this.

There are lots of reviewers with modern games and less with classic games. People seem to forget about older games and want the newest stuff because it looks better, even though graphics don't make the game but gameplay does.
It's a good game, but I can see why it wasn't as successful as some of the other games in the franchise. To me, it just dosen't have that addictive, have to play it one more time feel that the other games have...
Nah the older ones are boring, this one is fast and offers more, get with the times I’m not paying for basic as crap anymore

Actually, there is a home console version from the 2000s, Namco Museum Virtual Arcade for Xbox 360.

Super Pac-Man did see a Gameboy Color port, came on the Ms Pac-Man Color Edition for the handheld.

Super Pac Man was ahead of its time. We were expecting simple games with Pac Man, and Super Pac Man was a complex game. It's a great game, but it just mixed it up too much.
Also, those are melons, the kind that Hokkaido are famous for. The top part are the vines in which they are cut from. Japanese often depict melons in this way.

There Atari 5200 prototypes of Super Pac Man. Super Pac-Man is extremely well made. I consider one of the best arcade ports for the system too bad it was never released.
Technically, it WAS going to be on the 5200 (or at least on Atari's 8-bit computers), but never happened. It got released on the C64, and it came out on the PS2 in the poorly-sold Namco Museum Vol 2.

Probably one of the most difficult pac-man game it would been cool if super pac had a cape in the actual gameplay the music and sounds got better

I think there was a home version of Super Pac-Man, but only on the 5200, & it's rather pricey on ebay. But yeah, this game kicks ass.
Jr PacMan actually was successful commercially somewhat
it was successful enough to actually get a console port on the atari 2600 back around when the game came out, Super Pacman didn't which it was going to have a port on the atari 5200 but it was cancelled

No one knows that for shure. I guess the squirrel just demands to be there. There was a short time where it wasn´t there, but it came back. It was probably on vacation during that time.
What's amazing about this is that they called it Super Pac-Man years before the Super NES came out and every game felt the need to put Super in front of its title.
Funny enough, I've been playing Super Pac Man for 8 years now on my 60 in 1 cab, and just now found out you could use the button to gain super speed. I always assumed it was joystick only like the original.
