Principle: Reducing Sugars under hot alkaline condition undergoes tautomerization into enediol form. Enediol are strong reducing agents and convertscupric ions of the Benedict'ssolution into cuprous ions. The cuprous hydroxide formed during the process of heating is converted to cuprous oxide as red precipiate.
Wow its exactly written in satyanaryana Cupric is reduced to cuprous and color is cuprous hydroxide yellow and cuprousoxide red Another good to test is osazone reaction Which involves phenyl hydrazine
Very helpful sir by the way I m not MBBS student, I am From Paramedical (MLT) field & sometimes I need to watch your lecture sir & pls sir upload a more Practical video such as it is Benedict's test Thanks sir
Can we use water bath to heat in all the test of carbohydrates...i think result will be proper and easy to come..if we don't use in some test the soln is coming out of the test tube hence creating difficulty to get results
Does the solution turn green *to* brick red *after* cooling? I feel green ppt was due to less concentration of the reducing sugars in the solution, and brick red due to higher concentration. Right? Well explained👍
Reducing sugar in hot alkaline medium forms strong reducing agent Enediol. This reduces cupric ions to cuprous form. There is formation of Cu(OH)2 and CuO2 which gives different colors dependent on sugar concentration.
you would seperate the sample, and test both separately. as far as I know - there's no way to actually test for non reducing sugars and reducing sugars within one test tube
If the Benedict’s test gives negative result then we have to slightly heat it using hydrochloric acid and then let it cool down. Then add an alkali like sodium hydrogen carbonate to break down the glycosidic bonds in the non reducing sugar and then carry out the test.
If Benedict's test shows blue at the start, dont we already know its non reducing, so why do the things after? Y is hcl used instead of water to break down sugar?
No, maltose and glucose are types of sugars- carbohydrates. Non-carbohydrate substances will definitely not have these two reducing sugars present. The solution will remain blue (CuSO4- Copper Sulphate).

This is very big sentence
What will happen if we dont heat it? Will it still change colour
Thank you so much....

its so dangerous to shake the tube like that

Depending upon theamount of reducing sugar in the urine the color will deffer such as green(+),yellow(++),orange(+++) and prik red(++++)
Thank you so much sir😊
To observe the colour change clearly it should be immersed in a water bath and heated.
Sir if I learn nicely all ur vedios can I score well in biochem in proff?

Can you use some kind of catalyst for this method , and deposit that copper on som surface ,or exsample gripping a copper mirror?
U are carrying it in alkaline medium is any catalyst further required
Why heated alkaline is used
How to make sample
Sample means I mean kesa sample
what we can take in it
Mam if while heating the colour doesn't change but after 15 minutes you get red ppt settle at bottom, then will it be reducing sugar

Why should we add only 8 drops of urine because it is a semi quantitative the thing is what happens if we add more drops of urine or less ?
If u add more .the non- carbohydrate which have a reducing property gives false positive for Benedict test .
Benedict's reagent react with reducing sugar color get yellow,.why?
give the scientific reason easy to understand...
Reducing sugar in hot alkaline medium forms strong reducing agent Enediol. This reduces cupric ions to cuprous form. There is formation of Cu(OH)2 and CuO2 which gives different colors dependent on sugar concentration.

Urine
Sir if we have to recognize non redusing sugar and reduisng sugar which are in one solution ,how can we identify them separately?

i think it's to determine the concentration

Nope

Yes.Non_ carbohydrate like uric acid, ascorbic acid ,glutathione give false positive for Benedict test
It is not right method.
