You have to hear him sing these eyes you like that one too but not only does he play piano he plays that flute and what I heard I don't know if I'll get this right that he learned to play that only months before he did this song so he could play the flute in the video. And I read that he is still entertaining at age75 and doing good especially in Canada. Back in the day Robert Plant even said he was one of the best singers that's a big compliment coming from him.
These Eyes is a great ballad of theirs. My dad played it so much. I know the lyrics by heart. Burton Cummings is a tremendous vocalist. Great unique vibrato.
@joelhammond4162 , have to share this. My sister and my nephew who was 8 or 9 at the time were in the car when These Eyes came on the radio. He was singing along then uttered " Levis" instead of These Eyes 🤣😂 misheard lyrics at its' best.
I grew up with this great Canadian band. Burton Cummings learned to play the flute for this song "Undun". Some of their biggest hits are "These Eyes", "Laughing" "No Time", "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature", "Hand Me Down World", "Share The Land", "Bus Driver", "Star Baby", "Albert Flasher", "Rain Dance" etc. Burton Cummings has one of the best voices out there. Randy Bachman later left to form (BTO) Bachman Turner Overdrive & had many hits. And Burton Cummings had a great solo career.
According to Burton Cummings he had never played the flute until he was in a music shop and the proprietor told him the fingering was the same as the sax, which Burton had played. He bought one and played it on this tune on stage that very same night. Take that with a grain of salt if you will but that's the story.
Thanks for the Guess Who Reaction! I have been a Fan of theirs since they came out and served Burton Dinner a few times and talked to him a bit! The Two songs you reacted to were okay. It by far their est Songs are ,These Eyes, I’m Scared,, Stand Talk ! Sorry I don’t have , Laughing, Clap for the Wolfman, Share the Land ,Albert Flasher!
"No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature", same music, but 2 diff sets of lyrics, one by Cummings, the other, Bachman. "Hand Me Down World" is also amazing.
Their greatest song is "These eyes" I was born in 1965 and I grew up listening to all the most awesome songs and singers EVER!! THEY COULD ACTUALLY SING! NO HELP FROM COMPUTERS AND AUTO TUNE! Musicians could play real instruments! There's so so many artists that would blow any of these singers today out of their shoes that think they can sing! That's why most gen x and older only listen to what we grew up with 50s 60s, 70's, 80's and some 90's. Nowadays not even close to what real music really is! Search the song "star baby" by the guess who. That's another kind of fun beachy 60 s song! Enjoy the greatest music and singers in our lifetime ❤❤
"These Eyes," a relatively slow ballad about heartbreak from a failed relationship, is an especially fascinating song in that it was the first single and breakthrough hit for the band in America. It could be argued that The Guess Who were one of the rare bands, outside The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, in rock music that charted ballads, midtempo, and uptempo driving rock songs as big hits during the 1960s to early 1970s.
The lead guitarist was Randy Bachman, who would go on to form BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive). The sound of his solo lead guitar was ahead of its time. Quite a nice fluid sustain. Randy’s son, Tal Bachman, had a pop radio hit in 1999 “She’s So High.” They have radio shows and a YT channel together and perform a variety of music together.
This was a groovy blend of contemporary (late 60s) jazz/blues/rock and it was very popular. The singer Burton Cummings did a great job conveying a special vibe on this tune. FYI - solos were on all these songs from back then because pop songs were limited on duration for airplay.
The Guess Who was one of my first loves when I was in grade school, they were very popular and had several hits. You guys have just scratched the surface with this group.
The Guess Who have many, many hits. These Eyes and No Time were huge radio hits in Canada. New Mother Nature/No Sugar Tonight is two songs in one, the first half by Cummings the second by Bachman. Just look up their hits and you can't go wrong.
Thank you, thank you guys for reacting to Undun. My favourite Guess Who song. You are right, Nick, it rewards more listening and really grows on you. Have never heard that outro before...
'''''Burton Cummings is so under rated. I loved this band. Do "Stand Tall" or "These Eyes" next. You wouldn't believe how good Burton Cummings is live.
Never nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Never even been nominated!! Check out their song Share the Land. Great song with a cool guitar intro.
I think there is too much of a battle of who the Guess Who actually is even now. Recently main founders Randy and and Burton sued the "legal" owners of the band for abusing the bands name playing carnivals with only one minor original member. As the Randy and Burton left the band they relinquished the name...found out later that was a huge mistake.
Thanks for reacting to this song guys. It is my favorite Guess Who song. It was actually the "B" side of the 45 record of a single they released called "Laughing", but was played on radio stations and became extremely popular. I also recommend a song from Burton Cummings solo career called "A Song For Him" which I think you would like. And as other commenters have pointed out, the Guess Who have a lot of great songs that are worth checking out. Edit: I posted before I watched your video and no, I've never heard the music at the end either.
Excellent choice.....I agree with Bachman, my favorite also. This band was simply overflowing with talent. I think the name of the album is a play on the band Canned Heat plus that's what Central Canada is known for.....the cover photo is hilarious.
If you listen closely most of The Guess Who songs are singing about the United States as a Country! It's about how Burton Cummings felt about it! He didn't want to tour here! And wanted to stay in Canada, but Randy Bachman wanted to come here! Burton talked about this many years ago!
If you want to hear some good flute in rock n roll check out Jethro Tull. So many good songs but these are my favorites. Cross Eyed Mary. Hymn 43. Teacher….. This song, Undun, gets very jazzy at the end. Love it! Yeah. I’ve never heard that at the end of the song before.
My hometown boys from Winnipeg, Canada. We are one of the prairie provinces where we grow a lot of wheat and it was a take off on the name of a band in the 60's called Canned Heat. This song has more of a jazzy feel. Lenny Breau who was one of Canada's premiere jazz guitarists lived down the street from Randy Bachman the lead guitarist (In the hat) and Randy was influenced by him in some of his music. To see an absolutely killer version of American Woman please check out the 14 minute version live in Winnipeg from their reunion tour in 2004. It is a banger! Cheers
Burton decided he wanted a flute sound in the song. So he went to a music store and bought a flute, having never played one before and taught himself to play what you heard in an hour or so. Know more as a pianist, he could pick up a six and other instruments and just start playing them. Burton was considered to have one of the best rock male voices in the 60’s and 70’s. You should try their “ These Eyes “ it was in the movie “ Superbad “
Moody Blues - ‘Nights in White Satin’ has one of the most memorable flute solos. Burton Cummings is one of the best vocalists of that era imo and that flute solo was him playing. Also, of all the countless times I’ve listened to this song I’ve never ever heard that guitar solo at the end, so like you guys I was also caught off guard. Great reaction guys!
Nice review. I only ever had the Guess Who's greatest hits, but I listened to that CD many times. Never really knew who the singer was, but I did know the guy had/has some incredible pipes. They've got a lot of good tunes. Check out These Eyes, No Sugar, No Time.
this was actually side B ti These Eyes - I think Undun is their best song - jazzy, bluesym great guitar and the perfect song to showcase Burton's amazing vocals
Your take is interesting. Let me start by saying I appreciate your willingness to examine this song and as much as your personal experience and your knowledge of music makes you a bit confused as to its intrinsic value, still you grabbed on to some ingredients in this song that made you question what you're used to and allowed you to appreciate what the tune has. As soon as you can divorce yourselves from what you're conditioned to you are free to appreciate what's right there in front of your face. Congratulations. You guys are very discerning. Also there's no denying the musicality and the phenomenal voice of Burton Cummings. I'm lucky in that I was only 7 when this came out and I was free to enjoy it with no preconceived notions.
Wow! I heard this song numerous times when it was first released and over the decades, and I even own their best of CD and have downloaded it as well, and I have never once heard that last section, after the main song ends. Cool!
Here are some other 70's songs with great flute parts; "Heard It In A Love Song" by Marshall Tucker Band and two by Firefall; "You Are The Woman" and "Strange Way."
I forgot all about this song until like a year ago and then I practiced it and it is my one of my signature karaoke songs that everybody loves to hear me sing easy song to sing and it's fun and I love the music
Undun is not weird - it's just cool, west coast jazz vocal styling with a backbeat.
Right on !!!✌✌
With that nifty Chet Atkins-style countrypolitan guitar postlude. So creative.
@@jdw5678 Yep - Randy was a great fan of Chet Atkins and Atkins was a good friend to Randy.
No doubt! Saw this and said “yeah I wanna hear this again”. It’s awesome.

Even though this song is old, it never gets old. It sounds great every time!

Even their songs that were not big hits were excellent! Rocking and Artificial Paradise had some great songs!
I agree! Don't forget "Stand Tall." One of my favorites.
@@suzanneprock7286 Stand Tall was Burton solo. It would be another long list to name all his solo hits.
Burton Cummings was originally a sax player that's why the flute came easy to him as the fingering is the same.
I met Gary Peterson after a gig in ohio.... it was quick, but he did give me a pair of his sticks, with his name and The Guess Who on them.
According to Burton Cummings he had never played the flute until he was in a music shop and the proprietor told him the fingering was the same as the sax, which Burton had played. He bought one and played it on this tune on stage that very same night. Take that with a grain of salt if you will but that's the story.
Burton Cummings . . . The best voice in classic rock.
There's only one Burton Cummings. His voice is so unique and singular you can always tell when it's him singing.
Heard the song on the radio a million times, but never ever have I heard that bit on the end before.
Same here.
Really? I've heard that ending many, many times. Odd.
Me neither!
First time for me too!
There are a number of those little musical interludes between the tracks on the album.
Burton Cummings, the lead singer is actually playing the flute on this song!
One of the greatest bands ever
I was 9 yrs old when this song came out. I really liked it and have remembered it all these years. Good memories!
I've heard this song at least 10 thousand times and it gets better every time.............
'' These Eyes '' is the best track for me ❤
"No Time"
Same! Saw BC in concert a couple years ago and, at 75ish?, he went solid for two hours 😮. Still gives me goosebumps 😊
"These Eyes", THAT'S a track that was ahead of its time.
Burton Cummings has such an amazing voice. You really need to do "These Eyes" next.
These eyes ... One of my favorite songs.. brings back deepest memories. The kind you only let out at 3am.
What a voice!
And Garry Peterson is killin' it on drums!!!
I loved the Guess Who in the day. I forgot how much I liked this song.
Another beautiful song with a flute solo is " Colour My World" by Chicago.
No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature is EVERYTHING. Trust me, it’s a must.
The Guess Who is a band from my childhood. I consider it one of the top road trip bands to listen to. Burton Cummings was awesome!
Great band, good song but "These Eyes" and "No Sugar Tonight" are my faves. These Eyes is one of the best post break-up songs ever for sure.
yes, These Eyes

Flute in Rock?? Oh yeah, Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull is unsurpassed. No argument can be said.
Moody Blues featured a flute.
@@cindyknudson2715 Yes, but they didn't "rock" it like Ian Anderson nor regularly featured the flute in most of their music.
Focus.
Peter Gabriel in Genesis played some
