Thank you for posting this! It's sometimes a struggle finding George Raft films, and a VHS of this film fell into my hands. Unfortunately, I don't have a player, so you can imagine how happy I was to find this! Fun movie with all the trademark soapboxing of the era!
Great direction by Fritz Lang, who displays a humorous vein such as I had not witnessed in any other of his films, both in the USA and abroad. Career best performances from Raft and Sidney, wonderful expressionistic cinematography. Must-see. Thanks for sharing.
It's strange but Lang didn't like this movie but now it is a little gem. Such an unusual Flim Noir set to music. Raft and Sydney were good in this movie but not enough people have seen it since it's not on TV anymore. That's why I uploaded here.

TY for this post. It seems this project went thru a lot of changes in almost 2 years of pre-production. Not really sure how much of this music is Kurt Weill. Krasna expected to direct but the film fell into Lang's lap. And, for once, pan faced Raft emotes a bit. I do remember Lang thought it was a lousy film. But it may be a key to understanding Lang in 1938. v
Lang didn't like the film but it has become a classic and one of the only Film Noir's set to music, quite original. How dare you call my man pan faced on my Channel for him? LOL The shame is George was very animated in his 30's films the ones no one gets to see on TV anymore. I'll be putting more of those up so everyone will know he could emote a lot more then they knew. I love this about film noir, time and time again: the stylish robbers! Men arrive to rob a store. They are wearing smart suits, shiny black shoes overcoats and hats. One guy wears his raincoat over his arm.

Valentino's ex-wife wanted George to take Valentino's place after he passed but George refused. He was friends with Valentino and didn't want to build his career on someone elses.
I have heard for many years that he has the look of Valentino but he is nothing like him so it's rightly so that he wouldn't want to do that that would not be wise actor name Antonio Marrero said he can't compete with a ghost

George lived longer and this movie was many years after Valentino. Time moved on and George did many movies where you couldn't compare with 1925 movies of Valentino. @@hollywood-thegoldenage5310 yes rightly so on that level because this was someone at the time when I was a kid didn't really know too much about him only when I had saw him on a Canada dry commercial back in the seventies so I asked my mom who is he she told me his name is George raft he play some gangster pictures so the only thing I can say on that matter is over time when I became a teenager I picked up a book called great romantic actors and he was in that book but they always emphasize him it's just a gangster actor but I know years later they started really picking up when his dancing abilities now the reason I said it wasn't a wise idea taking another actor's place on that level because it can make and break you in a profession so I agree that he has to look of him but I just didn't know that they were close friends because at that time with information that had on them I don't know who was really mentioned or not I really don't know at that point so you're right I'm just discovering him more his dancing abilities I never knew he was a good dancer also I really didn't know he was that good of a lover in the pictures so I rediscovering some things about him and I'm trying to really look at his pictures but as you know on the internet they try to stiff me on five pictures of him I want to see

No, it wasn't he made maybe another 20 more movies but it was his only Proto Noir set to music. Quite unusual and he thought it was not a good movie but over time it turned out to be not only good but quite unique. I'm glad to post it since I have George Raft's FB Group to keep his legacy alive and many people have forgotten all he did do in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Look how people forgot this little gem.
After I watched this, I found a long interview with Ms. Sidney that was pretty good (bad sound and she wasn't wearing anything to assist her own hearing, which was actually pretty hilarious in spots). I LOVE GEORGE RAFT, zomg, I found a clip from "Broadway" where he does a super-fast version of his "Sweet Georgia Brown" dance, and I was knocked out by it! I love all the minute living details in this picture...it really gives you a sense of how they lived back then...Also did you know George George Raft was a REAL gangster in REAL LIFE? He started out with Oweny Maddy in the 20's. Oweny came from Leeds England. He soon rose through the ranks on the streets of New York eventually opening THE COTTON CLUB in Harlem; with Raft as his right hand man before Oweny sent him to Hollywood...Gangster for Sure...
Actually, he was not a gangster. Because he was born and raised in Hell's Kitchen, he knew some. Oweny Madden was a friend from their youth, though. Madden did not send George to Hollywood. George was not too thrilled to be playing gangsters in films. He was a dancer. That's how he got to Hollywood.

If you are reading this thread, you can see that most of the people that watched this film thought it was quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, for Lang and Paramount, however, it was a flop at the box office, and Lang eventually abandoned his stylistic Expressionistic touches in his subsequent films (except for cameo flashes here and there), and had to deal with smaller budgets, grade C actors, and grittier scripts. Personally, I couldn't buy the plot premise that Joe would be all hot to want to rob the store whose boss provided him with a job just because his wife didn't tell him she was an ex-con. Why would a jailbird like Joe put on such airs? It doesn't make any sense. Another scene that stretched credulity was the thieves' party reunion. You know the old saying, "No honor among thieves," these guys would not be sticking together after getting out of prison, let alone all get jobs at the same department store. And why would Joe's mob boss go through with the robbery that netted so little profit if he was warned by "Mr. Big" that to do so would bring on severe consequences? In my view, this movie was pretty average at best (AllMovie gives it two and a half stars, imdb 6.9); Paramount was hoping for a Christmas, feel-good type movie hit here, but the script was full of holes and the choice of Lang as director was probably mostly due to the fact that Kurt Weill was involved. However, it was definitely the most oddball film noir I've ever seen. Now, if you want to see a MUCH BETTER film noir with similar elements to this one, but without the cornball humor, check out Jean-Paul Melville's "Second Wind" ("Le deuxième souffle"). THAT film will keep you on the edge of your seat; "You and Me," OTOH, put me to sleep.
@GH3K3: J-P Melville 's "Le Deuxieme Souffle" can't compare with this film because screenwriter, Jose Giovanni born Joseph Damiani was a real-life WW II collaborator, murderer, gandster & blackmailer of hidden Jews during France's Occupation. Proud of being a former gangster & Milice member (underground paramilitary fascist collaborationist group), who was on death row, he wrote about his experiences which became the source material for several films through his books. Celebrated films whose screenwriter & dialogue writer he was include "Le Trou" (1960), "Classes Tous Risque" (1960), "In nomme LaRocca" (1961), "Les Grandes Gueules" (1965), "Les Aventuriers" (1967), "Les clans Des Siciliens" (1969), "Deux hommes dans la ville" (1973). The films cited have superb casts who make the director's work come alive in their portrayals of the characters on the written page. Two Jews, Fritz Lang & Kurt Weill --- already famous in Weimar Germany, escaped the Nazis & brought their artistic visions & talents with them. Luckily for us, we can still enjoy their work today.

@@GH3K3 I highly recommend the films mentioned primarily because they had great directors who worked with superb casts making the scripts come alive. The pre-Code & post-Code eras in American filmmaking are as different as night & day which is reflected in scripts, acting & directing. Those working in the post-Code era had handcuffs on which were later replaced by HUAC. Fritz Lang began in the "Golden Age" of Germany's Weimar cinema where he transitioned from silent films to talkies. As a contemporary of Murnau, Robison & other early directors, he employed the uniquely late-19th Century German Expressionist directorial/artistic/cinematographic style to tell a story. Examples of classic films include "M," "The Informer," & others. The Weimar cinematic visionaries had an important impact on post-WW II American & European filmmaking.

I taped this movie in 88', and loved it !!!
and it was never seen again onTV. That's why I uploaded it here. Most of George's better movies are not shown on TV for a long time now. What a shame.

Now, if you want to see a MUCH BETTER film noir with similar elements to this one, but without the cornball humor, check out Jean-Paul Melville's "Second Wind" ("Le deuxième souffle"). THAT film will keep you on the edge of your seat; "You and Me," OTOH, put me to sleep.
Lang didn't realize he had a gem in this movie. I believe it is a rare Film Noir with good music throughout the movie. A bit unusual.
@GH3K3: J-P Melville 's "Le Deuxieme Souffle" can't compare with this film because screenwriter, Jose Giovanni born Joseph Damiani was a real-life WW II collaborator, murderer, gandster & blackmailer of hidden Jews during France's Occupation. Proud of being a former gangster & Milice member (underground paramilitary fascist collaborationist group), who was on death row, he wrote about his experiences which became the source material for several films through his books. Celebrated films whose screenwriter & dialogue writer he was include "Le Trou" (1960), "Classes Tous Risque" (1960), "In nomme LaRocca" (1961), "Les Grandes Gueules" (1965), "Les Aventuriers" (1967), "Les clans Des Siciliens" (1969), "Deux hommes dans la ville" (1973). The films cited have superb casts who make the director's work come alive in their portrayals of the characters on the written page.
Two Jews, Fritz Lang & Kurt Weill --- already famous in Weimar Germany, escaped the Nazis & brought their artistic visions & talents with them. Luckily for us, we can still enjoy their work today.

So your argument is that this film is better because of the writer's prior history of derring do during the war? I will agree "Le Trou" was better than this snooze fest as that is the only film of those mentioned that I have seen.
@@GH3K3 I highly recommend the films mentioned primarily because they had great directors who worked with superb casts making the scripts come alive. The pre-Code & post-Code eras in American filmmaking are as different as night & day which is reflected in scripts, acting & directing. Those working in the post-Code era had handcuffs on which were later replaced by HUAC. Fritz Lang began in the "Golden Age" of Germany's Weimar cinema where he transitioned from silent films to talkies. As a contemporary of Murnau, Robison & other early directors, he employed the uniquely late-19th Century German Expressionist directorial/artistic/cinematographic style to tell a story. Examples of classic films include "M," "The Informer," & others. The Weimar cinematic visionaries had an important impact on post-WW II American & European filmmaking.
