No one plays Zorro like Tyrone. Powor the rest are all imitators . The charisma lives on even today.
My Dad met Tyrone Power during WWII. My Dad was a Marine and Mr Power graciously flew Dad and several other Marines back to their base.
@JesseOaks-ef9xn What a great story!
Thank you very much for sharing it with us.
I'm a Native combat veteran and whenever I have the honor of meeting a World War II veteran, I feel privileged to shake their hand, veteran to veteran.
The people who served in that war literally SAVED THE WORLD.
We would not have the freedom we have enjoyed since 1945, without their heroism.
Your father has my sincere admiration and gratitude for his service, not only to our country but to the world.
Again, my thanks for sharing a family story about 2 of my heroes, Tyrone Power and your father.
Both men are heroes in my eyes.
Semper Fi! 🫡
@ElmoUnk1953 Although I was never a United States Marine, I have nothing but respect for them.
On more than one occasion, when our team had been pinned down and close air support was unavailable, the USMC came to our rescue.
I've never been happier to see those Fighting Leathernecks in my life!
Eventuality, I got the chance to cross-train with Scout Snipers and those guys were all go, they never stopped, not once.
As far as I'm concerned, the United States Marine Corps are the greatest fighting forces ever.
This is the BEST ZORRO MOVIE IN MY OPINION
Easily.
The best Zorro film ever made. Great cast.
The only one where Diego's mother is alive.
I was going to make a comment saying the same thing, you beat me to it!
Basil Rathbone was probably the best fencer in Hollywood during this era. Tyrone Power was also well qualified. Their duel in this movie is classic and holds up well even today because it was performed without stunt doubles.
BASIL RATHBONE was a magnificent fencer.
I fenced for about a year before enlisting in the Air Force and then picked it up again after 15 years in government service.
My fencing coach afterward was a master fencer and had just missed out on the US Olympic team. He told me that Basil Rathbone could well have been one of the finest fencers in the world for decades had he not chosen to have been an actor.
During one of his tours in later life, to paraphrase, he said I could have cut Errol Flynn to ribbons any time I wanted!
He was so witty and charming.
He's my favorite cinematic Sherlock Holmes, edging out RDJ slightly.
Great comment!
Basil Rathbone taught both Errol Flyn and Tyrone Power to fence and said that Tyrone Power was an excellent swordsman.
@@ciAMkia Power was a marine fighter pilot during ww2. after the war the studio sent him and great friend Cesar Romero on a good will tour of Central and South America to huge success. Power piloted his plane the whole trip!
@@tasoulagoodrick2767 Power was a marine fighter pilot during ww2. after the war the studio sent him and great friend Cesar Romero on a good will tour of Central and South America to huge success. Power piloted his plane the whole trip!
@@justthink5854 Yeah, I've seen footage of that somewhere in my travels.
Great comment!
I've got to say, this is even better seeing it again this morning and paying attention more closely, and the fencing is even better than I first noted.
Rathbone and Power are fantastic in their fuel, though, were it a real fencing match, Rathbone would've run Power through, without question.
Also, Basil Rathbone was a war veteran, which not many people know.
He served as an Intelligence Officer during World War I, and was twice the Fencing Champion of the British Army, which during World War I was nothing short of phenomenal!
Rathbone taught both Tyrone Power and Errol Flynn to fence in their films.
There's far more to Basil Rathbone than most people know. He was quite a man and actor. He's also another hero of mine and for good reason.
Rathbone's own words, on Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power:
“Power was the most agile man with a sword I’ve ever faced before a camera. Tyrone could have fenced Errol Flynn into a cocked hat.”
Zorro crossing the foot bridge at a full run on horse back is one of the most unsung stunts ever.
Linda Darnell was definitely one of the best and most beautiful actresses ever.
U haven't seen this film since I was a child in the 1960s. The film is just as good today as it was then! Thanks for posting this film. It was a delight to see it again!
THE definitive Zorro, Tyrone Power. One of a trilogy of amazing swashbucklers by him (this one, Son of Fury and Black Swan)
Zorro is Spanish for fox. 🦊
@@GeneRogers-di6cl 🙂
@@GeneRogers-di6cl Never knew that. Thanks. 👍
It is indeed!
I learned that from my 7th grade Spanish teacher, which took place a very, very long time ago.
Also see the Prince of Foxes with Tyrone Power and Orson Welles.
To get to CA from Spain, he would probably have to have gone south of SA. There was no Panama Canal. Must have taken several months and no pleasant journey. Another excellent adaptation of the Zorro series. This one treats the religious aspect much better than the 1974 version.
Looking at the film from 5:16, definitely via Cape Horn
Usually went to where the canal is now and traversed by land. 🤙🏻
Take a sea horse, sea horse express.
@@edmcconnell2105A Sea Horse?
Well, I guess they had to keep the horse's head up! LMAO!
They would have disembarked on the Atlantic side of Panama, crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific side and boarded a ship to California. No one sailed through the Straits of Magellan unnecessarily.
I am SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS! I’ve been looking for it forever amongst many zorro movies. This is the zorro I grew up watching as a child and loved it SO MUCH! Thank you for posting it❤
Great film of Tyrone Power and the fantastic Basil Rathbone!
The fencing they perform in this film brings the action here to great levels.
Power was such a great actor and held his own with Rathbone here in their non-action scenes.
Linda Darnell is incredible too, both in her acting and beauty. She's younger than anyone else in the cast, at age 17, yet maintains her poise quite well.
This film holds up very well, even though it lacks the CGI special effects of today's hits, and so much the better as far as I'm concerned.
Hollywood has come to rely on computers far too much for my taste. Some actors have begun to speak out on this tactic as well.
Speaking as someone who has friends and family in the film industry, the use of CGI needs to be reined in if we are to have actors and actresses continue to provide us with performances that can bring us to our feet in applause or weep with them in sorrow.
I'm so glad this was not colorized. The black-and-white photography is sublime. Adding color would have only detracted from the stark beauty.
I haven't noticed if this film was chosen to be saved for its historical value, if not it certainly deserves it.
Blessings to you all.
I’ve always been a big fan of Tyrone Power in High Seas swashbucklers. This was a swashbuckler of another sort, still a stellar performance, nonetheless. My gratitude 🙏🏽
THE BLACK SWAN is my favorite Tyrone Power swashbuckling film because it also has the amazing Maureen O'Hara playing his love interest, and they make quite a pair. With Ms. O'Hara being feisty as ever.
Plus, The Black Swan is filmed in color!
It's here on TH-cam as well, which I'm sure you're aware.
By the way, another reason my wife and I are huge fans of Tyrone Power is that she's from his hometown of Cincinnati, and that's where we met. I was an Army brat and spent 2 years in school there, 2 important years, otherwise, I'd never have met my wife.
We were only friends back then and went off to lead our lives, only to have bumped into each other 35 years later.
Fate is an odd thing.
Be well, blessings to you.
The dance scene between Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell is such a beautiful scene with two of the most beautiful people ever to appear on the silver screen.
@GeneRogers-di6cl I was truly astonished to learn that Linda Darnell was a mere SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD when this film was released in 1940, which might have made her a baby of SIXTEEN while filming!
Ms. Darnell held her own filming with Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone, even gaining 2nd billing, ABOVE Basil Rathbone!
I was gobsmacked when I noticed that on the movie poster! That's just crazy!
@@ciAMkia yes you’re correct! I’ve always called them two of the most beautiful people to ever grace the silver screen. Sadly, they would both would die young. Tyrone would have a heart attack while doing a movie and a few years later Linda would perish in a fire.but we have them always with us on the screen and in our hearts.
One of Tyrone Power's best. 👍
Best sword fight in classic Hollywood, and possibly overall. Basil Rathbone wrote in his memoirs that Tyrone Power was the best swordsman he ever fought in his career. He said Power "Could have fenced Errol Flynn into a cocked hat",
Rathbone should know, since he taught them both. As an unparallelled master it mustve been difficult for him to find proper training partners!
What a timeless classic masterpiece...This is the sixth time I'm watching it in my life...That scene where he jumps off a bridge on his horse and escapes through a barrage of bullets made my day when I first watched it when I was 6, I've just turned 45 and it hasn't changed 🙂🙂
"THE ABSOLUTELY" best/GREATEST(!!!) sword-fight scene in Hollywood film history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Basil Rathbone, A REAL-LIFE FENCER/considered the best in Hollywood, taught BOTH Tyrone Power AND Errol Flynn how to PROPERLY sword-fight; it's athame that he was NOT allowed /permitted to play a sword-fighting hero/good-guy.
Well, Basil's reward (not that much) later on was he ended up portraying the most memorable Sherlock Holmes pre Benedict Cumberbatch...something he was justly proud of.
The swordsmanship fight is better than the other Zorro films I’ve watched. Also, TP is drop-dead handsome. I’ve enjoyed watching immensely. Thank you for sharing..much appreciated❤️
No wonder, Basil Rathbone was a WWI British Army intelligence officer and twice British Army fencing champion. His swordsmanship was unparallelled, not just in Hollywood. And he taught Power (as well as Errol Flynn) and had great praise for Power's swordsmanship. Stands to reason that the 2 of them is behind probably the greatest fencing scene in movie history.
Power was a marine fighter pilot during ww2. after the war the studio sent him and great friend Cesar Romero on a good will tour of Central and South America to huge success. Power piloted his plane the whole trip!
I agree -- this is a great version of the Zorro saga ! Thoroughly enjoyable and Tyrone Power played the lead to perfection. Thank you for posting.
Very good movie with Tyrone as lead
The tv series with guy williams was very good too one of my favorites as a kid
I love this, always loved Zorro, Tyrone Power is excellent as the hero here, loved him in all his movies…he is a marvelous actor, so is Basil Rathbone. I love movies that are real movies and NOT the CGI or AI created and influenced by technological innovations. It takes real talent and skill, lots of hard work and great actors/actresses to create a film worthy of being called a classic film like this one, including great swordsmanship…HIGH 5…..👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🎥
And no one ever made a better directing effort than Rouben Mammolian in this film
Still my favorite movie of all time, and I've seen lots and lots and lots of movies! It's far from perfect, probably seems a little fake and silly in spots to younger viewers, but like other great works of art, its strengths far exceed its weaknesses. With one of the most brilliant scores ever written, classic and memorable dialog and of course the best sword fighting scene in all of cinema between the incomparable Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone - as well as one of the most beautiful dance scenes, following the fantastic dinner scene....when I learned Ty Power wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award I've never had any use whatsoever for that bunch of phonies
Eugene Pallette speaking Latin!! And pretty decently, too. Great film in all aspects.
Perhaps he had some previous experience 2 years earlier as Friar Tuck in The Adventures Of Robin Hood.
@@spikespa5208 I live about a mile from the park where The Adventures of Robin Hood was filmed. Taken many walks by the exact shooting locations.
I knew an IBM engineer who served in the Marines during WW2. He told me that Tyrone Power was always considered to his fellow Marines and they all liked him.
One of my all time favorite films with two of my favorite actors - Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell (with whom I shared a birthday).
Thomas and Martha Wayne took their son Bruce aka BATMAN to see The Mark of Zorro at the Monarch Theater in Gotham City, New Jersey Blessings and HUGS! 👑💜
Very good knowledge.
This is the second film but in much better quality than the other one here on TH-cam. Thank you 😊
They are distorted.
@@josephvitielo1693 No! Go watch the other one on TH-cam and I promise you won’t watch 5 minutes.
Linda Darnell..."...what Nature intended". Quote from another of her movies...and all about Simona too.
One of my favourite thanks for uploading
I just realized I saw this film on TV when my grandparents visited us in 1960, I always wondered which Zorro film ended with him sticking the sword in the ceiling! It only took me 64 years to figure it out ❤❤👍👍👍😁😁😎😎
Check out British actor Richard Greene, he was a pre ww2 film star and idol in the USA, and at one time a rival to Robert Taylor for Fans.
He left Hollywood when the war started and joined an Armoured unit where he distinguished himself and was wounded.. After the war he returned to acting and became TV's Robin Hood in the Adventures of Robin Hood and a movie Sword of Sherwood Forest.
one of his films like Zorro is Captain Scarlett. A great actor and a brave soldier.
Thank you very much for posting this magnificent movie ❤the very best zoro
Excellent. The best Zorro.
Prachtig! , zoals de eerste keer toen ik hem zag in mijn jeugdjaren. Bedankt.
Thank you for the great movie
❤
This film has one of Alfred Newman's best and most memorable scores. Unfortunately, the original score nor a complete re-recordng has ever been released; a shame indeed!!
Have seen this movie numerous times. Still a great swashbuckler. Tyrone Power could play any role.
Gee TYRONE POWER isn't Bad this is only the 2 film I've seen him in, forgotten the other..He's more physical then i remember😮
Great movie. See The Scarlet Pimpernel for an earlier story with a similar character (played by Leslie Howard). Sometimes called the first superhero.
"The Scarlet Puh-Puh-Pumpernickle!"
The original and the best! Great to see again and such good video and sound. FANTASTIC
Thanks for sharing this great film. It brought joy seeing this after so many years.
This was just great, thank you. They don't make 'em like this anymore...
Tyrone Power is splendid, Linda Darnell is beautiful, but the real hero of his film IMHO is Basil Rathbone - what a deliciously evil « bad guy »! And this from the same actor who could play Sherlock Holmes, the ultimate « good guy », as well!
Montague Love plays the father of Zorro.
Quelle plaisir de revoir ce film
J'ai souhaite le revoir mais sa ne sais jamais fait
Merci à vous pour cette petites
Je me souviens l'avoir vue au ciné club quand j'etait plus jeune trop cool
This should've been shot in color, as "The Adventures of Robin Hood" was two years earlier.
There is more contrast in black and white picturaization than colour.
Black and white does nothing to detract from this great film.
Thanks!
Thank you for your generosity and appreciation. Your gift means a lot to me and I truly value your support.
Best regards,
This was a great movie. The first time i saw it was 1957.
Excellent!
Tyrone belíssimo e elegante como sempre❤
Marvelous film and great actors
Brilliant. That's how you do it.
1:13:34 - Lolita (Linda Darnell) tells Diego (Tyrone Power) that the soldiers have arrested Friar Felipe (Eugene Pallette) and think he is Zorro. Hey, I love this film, it's been a favorite of mine since I was a child. But, really!! *_WHO in the world would believe that the 300 pound Friar could be Zorro??????!!!!!_*
Meu grande sonho cem zorro .parabéns ventos projetos . Mascarado . Parabéns novela espada da Rosa 🌹 🌹
I also grew up with this Zorro great movie
When they knew hot to make great movies!!!
California was named supposedly by the Conquistadors who came up Baja California after crossing the Sea of Cortez into California believing possibly that California was an island. As legend goes the Conquistadors named it after a mythical island of giant amazons (tall warrior like women) ( not yet named) . That is one premise. 😊
Nice classic
The best Zorro's movie that i saw
This film and the two Douglas Fairbanks Sr. silents are tops in my book. (The Guy Williams led Disney series is entertaining in its own right and highly recommended.)
Great!
This is a great film and just plain fun for 1.5 hours on a Saturday afternoon.. No lecturing about Trans rights or the climate.. The colorized version is well done.
Would have thought that B. Rathbone would have discovered earlier who Zorro was !😉😉
"Old California, in a bygone era of sprawling haciendas and haughty caballeros, suffers beneath the whip-lash of oppression. Missions are pillaged, native peasants are abused, and innocent men and women are presecured by the corrupt governor and his army.
But out comes a champion of freedom rides the highways. His identity hidden behind a mask, the laughing outlaw ZORRO defies the tyrant's might. A deadly marksman and a demon swordsman, his flashing blade leaves behind..."
President Trump. 2024
.....the winner.....
How does Trump even deserve being mentioned in a classic 1940’s movie. Trump 2024 in jail I hope
Good as they come. ❤
Me gustan mucho las películas de Tyrone power en español completas por favor y más películas, de este actor 😅
Sure. It Was a realistic good figth. But to me THE BEST ONE Was the performed by Stewart Grainger in SCARAMOUCHE, a high class duel at the end of the movie. Errol Flyn, Tyrone Power were algo excelent handlers of the sword in the móvies. Clap a ronda to all of them and the producers. From Miami
ESSE É O MELHOR FILME SOBRE O ZORRO !
This is sch a great version, but ruined or just annoying the pointless adds, every time I get settled some annoying bleeping adds comes on,Rathbone the star in all his movies such a presence❤

Commentary from film historians indicates that while Power did MOST of the fencing duel scene as a good fencer (Rathbone in contrast was a superior trained fencer) a few camera shots with Don Diego's back to the camera were done by a stunt expert fencer. But TP did most of the duel scene.
Great film fine actors Tyrone was a gentleman hansom pity his lifestyle got to much for him,

Nosso saudoso, e eterno gay william!

Ability to act out advanced fighting scenes, like the martial arts permits, back in 1940? Scary!
A good fencing choreographer and two actors who weren't strangers to the blade. Especially Rathbone.
