I showed my dad this video and he was impressed how easy it was to eliminate fogged headlights. I been telling him for years to clean his own headlights and now he wants to attempt to do it as a project that we can both do together.
I had the same issue with my Subaru Forester. I used car polishing cutting compound and finished off with toothpaste. It did work but it didn't last all that long (about 6 months). I'll give one of the kits a go, looks like it will do a better job. Thanks for posting. Cheers
Yes i was about to mention that that is the weak point of this product. By now i'm guessin his headlights are hazy again. ChrisFix has a video about doing it but he says that this kit uses too fine sanding to make a clear coat stick.
if you skip the polishing step and clearcoat after the trizact it will stick... newer 3m kits are coming with a wipe to apply clearcoat instead of the polishing compound
your music was the best of all the videos I watched ,. and the dogs add a nice homei touch , where is the wife bringing a fresh slice of apple pie ?? you get 5 stars from me ,,,, keep up the good work ,,,,,
If you want to try, there are several videos about removing tape residue. Some use comercially made products, others use oils (like peanut, olive, and corn oil) or peanut butter. It works on many adhesives.
Tape residue can be removed with regular shop solvent and a rough rag with good old elbow grease. An alternative is removers like Goo-gone etc. from hardware stores. Used plain solvent for years as a detailer. Can’t wait hurt finishes etc. (will remove any wax or polish though, you will have to reapply).
I used the sponge pad on the drill, but skipped all the sanding and used "extra whitening" toothpaste (!). Possibly slower as it's less abrasive, but was plenty enough to work for me... (and who else on your street has minty flavoured headlamps?! lol)
I have done Dozens of these lights with nothing more than cutting compound and a rag. You could buff but cutting compound is all you need. Tried the overly expensive kits and the compound works every bit as well.
if you only use compound in 6 months or less the headlights are yellow again, you need to sand and remove the old clearcoat first. and than apply new clearcoat or sealant
That kit did a really good job. If and when that happens to my headlights, I will give that kit a try. Thanks for the demonstration. God Bless and take care. Do you have an update video on your friends vegetable garden where you did the lasagna raised bed?
Did the old drill have any controllable speed as you run the risk burning the polycarbonate lens!! Great video all the same well done 😎👍🇬🇧 I would have removed the headlight tape residue from the lens first!!
You can remove the left over tape adhesive on most surfaces by using an oil, a mild cloth scrub and clean with alcohol. I've found WD-40 works the best.
With a bit more elbow grease you'll attain crystal clear lenses. Don't forget to use the UV protection coating and re-apply every 6 months or so. Some kits include this liquid. What caused the lenses to turn yellow in the first place is most likely the road salt/de-icer of your local areas.
Mike Placzek thx for the tip, we're going to do a follow up video with some headlights that have really bad haze, and we'll do the UV coating. thx! eric.
Mr Gardenfork, I will take your advice regarding the use of masking tape.To remove the glue-like tape residue on your headlight lens, try using some vegetable oil on a portion of the soft dry cotton cloth, (like flannel material) to rub off this gluey residue. Yes this requires a bit of elbow grease and that you may possibly have to repeat this action.Don't forget to wash off the vegetable oil residue. For just the straight out 'clouded or hazy lens surface rejuvenation, (to give you a showroom appearance or finish) I have used just ordinary toothpaste and then using a 'swirling motion when doing it by hand' then wipe the surface off with a medium damp wet soft cloth, or if you want to use an electric drill, you could try a lambs-wool polishing buff pad affixed to your electric drill. Again, don't forget to wipe off the toothpaste residue. One must at least try these methods as I have found these methods do the specific job that needed to be done.Remember the safety requirements when using an electric drill.
It is more easy to remove the haze and fog from headlights using ScrubbingBubbles bathtub cleaner. Spray it on, let it work for a few minutes and remove using a "scratch free" kitchen scouring pad.
yes, its tape, i couldn't get it off . tried everything i had in the garage, but didn't have the right stuff. my headlights are pretty good despite it. thx!
Meer Kat Hmmm, never heard of that. I've got an '03 Avalanche though that desperately needs this done to it. However I saw one that was a permanent fix, and the guy put an aerosol clear coat on the headlights after wet sanding and everything. But thank you. I've never heard of that. Lol, might just go with the kit anyway, easier to do, though may not be permanent.
Garrett Scott yeah clear coat works very well too and is pretty much permanent. On a serious note go ahead and try using the alcohol to get rid of that sticky tape and other gunky crap. Make sure you wear some gloves or you'll end up with dry skin.
All this yellowing and hazing of plastic can be avoided if the manufacturers would use glass again. Or at least develop a plastic that is non yellowing. Cheap cars, expensive cars all suffer from this hazing. Great video !!!
W40 or similar helps removing sticky things. To clean the lens I just use toothpaste (by hand). Indicators too, but sometimes I put them in the dishwasher as well.
You can remove tape glue with mineral spirits and a soft cloth, it's how we clean up paintwork after removing decals, don't be tempted to use other paint thinners, good old fashioned mineral spirits are what you want, we had one genius who tried to use some kind of print roller cleaner and he melted his plastics... Ouch!
I'll try this kit, Eric. Looks really good! I also saw another video where a guy used bug repellent spray and a cloth and it had the same results! Haven't tried that one yet as well ;)
russtex i think the bug spray may somehow melt the plastic, this method is basically using grades of sandpaper to remove the scratches and then polish the lens. works pretty good. my headlights were a lot brighter afterward.
I have not tried it but my daughter told me about using toothpaste to do this. She has watched a number of videos on it and it looks to be effective ???
ERIC HERES SOMETHING I WOULD LIKE TO LEARN HOW TO DO AND THAT IS GROWING MUSHROOMS IS ANYWAY YOU CONSIDER TRYING THIS I KNOW I CAN DO THIS I DONT LIKE READING DIRECTIONS BUT I LIKE WATCHING INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS THATS HOW I LEARN MOST OF WHAT I KNOW
Im using 600 grit, 800 grit, 1000grit 1500 grit 2000 grit, 2500grit vet sanding in order to get perfect results of headlight restauration with wooden small brick. Then I use sharp polishing paste and after all shine and wax paste. Every client dont believe that is possible. Also its possible to make it last longer if u use acrylic laquer.
my bro did mine which were really bad and they came out like almost new on a 10 year old Matrix ... a local handyman told me another trick, he said you can use the "OFF" spray insect repellent and it does almost the same thing ... gotta try that when they get hazy because this needs to be maintained; it will fog over again.
You need to buy a can of UV resistant clear-coat and spray when done, or your nice headlamps will turn yellow even faster than they did the first time, because you've removed the original UV protection.
You know what works really well? Toothpaste, windex, and a sock. Stick your hand in the sock, put some Toothpaste on the sock, and then spray the headlight with windex and rub the Toothpaste in with the sock. Gradually spray as you're rubbing the Toothpaste in. It works really well.
ok... 2 comments here , or better yet, 2 questions. first, you didn't use any kind of liquid or water at first , it wasn't till the last final step, why ??? 2nd question, why the dusk mask ? why the face beer ? or am I missing something ?
you dry sand the headlights first, following the instructions that come with the kit. it works well. best to apply a UV sealer afterward. when sanding i try to use a dust mask as much as possible. thx!
The kit instructions state, Dry sand at first and second stage, The third step the trizact p3000 with tap water!!!This pad is truly magical as it combined both polishing and sanding!! Best kit made!! end of ! 😊 👍
you could have sanded the tape residue off!!..also you should have spent more time sanding and more time compounding and another tip is after compounding you could've bought some polishing compound wish is a finer compound and that would have made it look new again

After you are finished polishing the lenses there is a clear coat that is UV resistant and can help keep the lenses from yellowing in a short time
I showed my dad this video and he was impressed how easy it was to eliminate fogged headlights. I been telling him for years to clean his own headlights and now he wants to attempt to do it as a project that we can both do together.
Blake Kunst I wish my dad loved me...:(
Nice job. Small hint, you could pop up the hood instead of masking it ;)
Ime Prezime that was my first though xD
You and I had the same idea. I guess great minds think alike. Lol
Cleared the yellow haze from my headlights today. Turned out great. Thanks! I did this after watching your video. Even used the link to order the kit.
orangepinkgarden great to hear you fixed the headlight haze, and thanks for the purchase! eric.
I had the same issue with my Subaru Forester. I used car polishing cutting compound and finished off with toothpaste. It did work but it didn't last all that long (about 6 months). I'll give one of the kits a go, looks like it will do a better job. Thanks for posting. Cheers
Cool, cooking, and gardens are my favorites.
It's deja vu all over again. :) I bought a 3M kit and did this after seeing your first video. Worked great!
I love your Labs!!! I flipped out as soon as I saw them. What cuties.
thx!
here are some videos of the Labradors playing: th-cam.com/users/GardenForkLabs
don't forget to apply some UV protection clear/gloss coat spray paint on it to protect it from the sun
Yes! good tip, thx!
Yes i was about to mention that that is the weak point of this product. By now i'm guessin his headlights are hazy again. ChrisFix has a video about doing it but he says that this kit uses too fine sanding to make a clear coat stick.

I've wondered about those kits...gonna have to get one now! Thanks Erick!
***** buy a good one, not the cheap headlight kit. thx! eric.
GardenFork 3m is always on point with their products.
happytreefriends1fan
they make good products, IMO, eric.
your music was the best of all the videos I watched ,. and the dogs add a nice homei touch , where is the wife bringing a fresh slice of apple pie ?? you get 5 stars from me ,,,, keep up the good work ,,,,,
i wish i got apple pie, thx!
hi
If you want to try, there are several videos about removing tape residue. Some use comercially made products, others use oils (like peanut, olive, and corn oil) or peanut butter. It works on many adhesives.
Another great video, need to do my car lights too and now I now how. Never knew there were kits out there, thanks!
You do the best 😍😍😍
Dude! I have the same drill!
LIKED!
Good video thanks for sharing👍 I'm going to have to go look for that kit at the store.
You should add a clearcoat( a 50/50 mixture of Spar urathane & mineral spirits) to prolong that look.
Good job, Your lab brought me here. I miss mine.
sorry to hear, watch my pups on their own YT channel: th-cam.com/users/GardenForkLabs
I used the sponge pad on the drill, but skipped all the sanding and used "extra whitening" toothpaste (!). Possibly slower as it's less abrasive, but was plenty enough to work for me... (and who else on your street has minty flavoured headlamps?! lol)
Thanks for the video love the drill pieces
good work thanks for the video
Good job, by the way it will work on stainless steel also. The orange stuff is a super fine buffing compound, like knife makers use.
very helpful!
good job 😎😊
Good idea
Great job!
I have done Dozens of these lights with nothing more than cutting compound and a rag. You could buff but cutting compound is all you need. Tried the overly expensive kits and the compound works every bit as well.
product name?
if you only use compound in 6 months or less the headlights are yellow again, you need to sand and remove the old clearcoat first. and than apply new clearcoat or sealant
Because it has some fillers. Just a bandaid fix.
@@lsedanolg meguiars compound or
Turtle wax polish compound or plastix
good job.
That kit did a really good job. If and when that happens to my headlights, I will give that kit a try. Thanks for the demonstration. God Bless and take care. Do you have an update video on your friends vegetable garden where you did the lasagna raised bed?
Teresa H i'll go see how that garden is doing. thx! eric.
great fantastic I'll do for my truck headlight. thx.
Great job!!!!👍👍
Did the old drill have any controllable speed as you run the risk burning the polycarbonate lens!! Great video all the same well done 😎👍🇬🇧 I would have removed the headlight tape residue from the lens first!!
You can remove the left over tape adhesive on most surfaces by using an oil, a mild cloth scrub and clean with alcohol. I've found WD-40 works the best.
You can do the same thing with rubbing compound #1 and #2 grid by hand.
That was nice
Doesn't look bad 👍😀
Thank you.

That one part on the right side of the headlight pisses me off. Looks like tape residue. I'm sure you could get rid of it though.
yes, its tape, i couldn't get it off . tried everything i had in the garage, but didn't have the right stuff. my headlights are pretty good despite it. thx!
GardenFork Yrah, looks good man.
Garrett Scott try using isopropyl alcohol and a little bit of elbow grease
Meer Kat Hmmm, never heard of that. I've got an '03 Avalanche though that desperately needs this done to it. However I saw one that was a permanent fix, and the guy put an aerosol clear coat on the headlights after wet sanding and everything. But thank you. I've never heard of that. Happy father's
You were using plain water ? bcuz that looked more like soapy water or Windex , does it matter ?
All this yellowing and hazing of plastic can be avoided if the manufacturers would use glass again. Or at least develop a plastic that is non yellowing. Cheap cars, expensive cars all suffer from this hazing. Great video !!!
watcher818 glass does last as long
Unfortunately they won't make them again
Is there a similar way to clean a water meter? Also with moisture from the water that pass thu
Try the oven cleaner that dissolves grease and dirt, you will be impressed and you will see the new lamp
great video
thanks a lot
how much was the kit, i used the toothpaste an a sonic brush an it wrked nicely, but i think the kit wld b even better
I used toothpaste and rag for mine and it worked flawlessly. took about 10 minutes each lens. Night and day difference. Try it!
Great video :)
Wow craizy idea
NICE VIDEO KEEP IT
Who makes this kit that you used? I have seen kits made you McGuiars but haven't taken the time to look closely at it. Let me know.
the info is listed in the video description, just below the video player, thx!
W40 or similar helps removing sticky things. To clean the lens I just use toothpaste (by hand). Indicators too, but sometimes I put them in the dishwasher as well.
never heard of using the dishwasher for lenses. thx!
Well,I saw this before on chrisfix's channel and I still like his way more than this
Wow, shit positive feedback for no reason. Well I liked the comments before you showed up, how's that?
nice
what number of the 1st grip that you use and the 2nd one?
it does look like my Forester. I will definitely go out and purchase this.
WOW!!!
u could remove that tape residue with further wet sanding using 800 grid sand paper in early stage, final result could be much better.
I've had good luck using Goo Gone to remove sticky tape residue. Citrus based, so shouldn't hurt the plastic.
good suggest, thanks for that. i think the tape residue etched into the plastic. thx!
I would be leery to use sandpaper of any grid on my headlights.
Looks great though.
At my work we use 1,000 grit sandpaper & soap & water. You get better detail when using by hand. Over all cost is abou 50 cents.
I can't even imagine doing this by hand.
So you can do that but can’t get rid of tape?
try putting a spray on uv resistant non yellowing clear cloat
yes, that works great. thx for the info!
Glue from the tape can be easily removed by simple acetone...
Ouch!
wow, thanks for the heads up!
GardenFork wd40 work like a charm every time for removing the tape
Mesharyhd Never tried WD40 for that but I sure will give it a try.
John Smith hgu
Scott the car guy here, you can get that 3m kit at O'Reilly Auto
I'll try this kit, Eric. Looks really good!
I also saw another video where a guy used bug repellent spray and a cloth and it had the same results! Haven't tried that one yet as well ;)
russtex i think the bug spray may somehow melt the plastic, this method is basically using grades of sandpaper to remove the scratches and then polish the lens. works pretty good. my headlights were a lot brighter afterward.
Pop the hood n tape the indicator
That's GOTTA be a New York plate with the color lol.
I have not tried it but my daughter told me about using toothpaste to do this. She has watched a number of videos on it and it looks to be effective ???
StarAnyse i don't think toothpaste will work, you need to use several grades of sandpaper for it to work. thx! eric.
with the tape residue use eucalyptus oil to remove it
Hes a Yank....do they know what a bloody Eucalyptus looks like..??
ERIC HERES SOMETHING I WOULD LIKE TO LEARN HOW TO DO AND THAT IS GROWING MUSHROOMS IS ANYWAY YOU CONSIDER TRYING THIS I KNOW I CAN DO THIS I DONT LIKE READING DIRECTIONS BUT I LIKE WATCHING INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS THATS HOW I LEARN MOST OF WHAT I KNOW
IRONDAWG63 mbe this summer we can do that. thx, eric.
Mine now has more haze than before .
Lets sand plastic into the environment with no dust collection. Yay. Microplastic for everyone!
For God's sake grow a pair!! You nuppy!!
link to a kit to buy... it's a commercial

BarbaraL Lowell good to hear you could remove the headlight haze. you can also coat the repaired lens with a UV protector. thx! eric.
Oooh,15 cents worth!!🤣🤣🤣
Did he not wet the light or disk
You need to buy a can of UV resistant clear-coat and spray when done, or your nice headlamps will turn yellow even faster than they did the first time, because you've removed the original UV protection.
razor blade and some wd40 would take off that tape residue. FYI
Use some clear coat after your done polishing and it will stay clear longer.
you forgot to wet the surface before you sanded..
Alex Tran
3m kit is dry sand for the first two steps.. you only use water for the trizact disc
U can do it to glass but not to plastic
slurry is a fun word to say.
Naphtha will take care of adhesives put it is a chemical so apply fast and wipe fast !

Do It Yourself . thx!
White toothpaste mixed with bicarbonate soda and you get roughly the same results. Been doing that for 20 years
