    Hi everyone, sorry for leaving you so long without any video, but it's hard for me to combine my painting schedule and my videos. A tutorial on glazing was supposed to come but I lost all my video footage... so it will be for later.
    Please be indulgent with me, as this video didn't show a finished painting but a painting in progress. I have to say that I sort of went out of my ways to provide the footage for this video, as I normally work the painting in its entirety without leaving a blank canvas... but right here it was just easier to skip sort part to shoot the video. Hopefully you can still learn a little bit from this quick demonstration.
    If you want to support my work, go to :

    Thanks for watching.

    Grisaille lets the artist fine tune the values and shapes and then concentrate on color later. It is a brilliant method.

    Thank you so very much for all this wonderful information! It has been decades (!)since I have drawn regularly. Now that my children are grown, it has been my desire to learn again to draw & also to paint. Your videos are clear & very informative. Thank you for a place to start from. Maybe I can go back to school to learn more after mastering these important basics. You have the heart of a teacher as well as an artist. :)

    Ive found that by doing the grissale... the quality of my work is far superior... It allows me the freedom to make changes as i go along more easily... plus u can't compete with the depth of the scene by skipping it. the eye doesn't lie.... So i think that to expedite time to be more productive faster to increase sales.... coupled with peoples laziness is why that most modern artists Opt out and skip it... For me its essential.

    I think with modern mediums more people start with a grisaille like drawing before moving on to color, photoshop lets people layer paint without waiting for paint to dry, I'd love to see you trying out digital mediums

    Thank you for posting these lessons. I am enjoying them. Do you not find that the burnt umber will bleed through to upper layers of your painting as the patning ages, burn umber is used in the grisaille? It would be interesting to learn how much paint you used in making your grisaille marks, and how much medium...would love to see your palette and brush as you pick up your paint just prior to transferring the paint to your canvas?

  • @carlosdommar

    Great video! however, what is the idea of painting a grisaille if you will cover it later with opaque color? In that cases it is not more efficient to start the painting with a simpler sketchy underpainting made with transparent color, e.g. burnt/raw umber and and a bit solvent? Great channel.

    Hello,
    I am working on a still life which would be expressed in dark background (as Caravaggio did) and I am planning to use Gesso as my first step towards sketch with 'Ivory black' and 'Mixing white.' Then values would be added with the the help of earthy colours (Burnt Umber). Eventually,It will follow with opaque colors and glazing at the end with 'French ultramarine' and 'Terre Verte.'
    Do you think that I am in the right path (as I am a beginner)?
    Thank you

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kaygan Zemin It sounds like a good plan ! I think you just have to do it to see how it goes. And if you're not sure about something, a good idea is to make a color study first. Good luck !

    When you are glazing, do you want for the paint to dry before adding another layer, or the glazes are wet in wet?

    Nice info! I paint good landscapes but I always struggle with realistic flowers as well as still art... This will help me a lot... Question: would you recommend oils or can I use acrylics to for this technique ? Since they dry faster

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you struggle, you might want to have more time to correct before it dries, therefor I think oil is better.

    J'ai préparé une grisaille récemment, et après des semaines d'attente, la peinture n'était toujours pas sèche! Est-ce que vous suggérez un médium qui permet d'accélérer le séchage? J'ai souvent entendu qu'utiliser un medium pareil peut causer deux trois problèmes :)

    What is the point in having such a grim colour for the grisalle stage as one is going to paint skin colour later on?

  • @michaeladlj
    @michaeladlj 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fabulous, do you know any exercises to do to get good monochromatic paintings?

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The best thing to make good monochromatic paintings is to master drawing and values. Once you know how to draw and get accurate values, painting a grisaille only challenges you to handle the paint, but the rest is as easy as drawing. This is why I recommend this technique for beginners. For training, you can paint plaster casts, tea pots, all sorts of white objects... Or translate any colored picture into a monochromatic painting.

    hi florent I have a question: why paint a grisaille if you will cover it with opaque paints?

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ghostvillage1 Hi ! I don't always do it but I often suggest it for beginners. It's like a building with sturdy foundations. You don't necessarily see them but it supports the whole. Plus it's easy to do, easier than a painting in full colors. Also, you don't really paint 100% opaque on top of it. So it gives a cool grey undertone that can be desired here and there, especially for skin tones.

    Hi! how much medium do i need to work lights over darks as you did the lights in the grisaille?

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +thewalrus906 It depends on what type of flow you want your paint to have. I generally add a few drops of medium util my paint has the consistency of a nice cream. Not too liquid and not too sticky. Also the pile of paint should hold together and not spread like a liquid, and reflect light nicely. It's a matter of feeling. I made a video on medium if you want...th-cam.com/video/z7DWCoS-eiE/w-d-xo.html
