I think selling the unit and pull out equity is a good choice. Probably I would have tried to rent it out without agency. Did you consider parking lot as an investment? I believe parking spaces in crowded cities perform well.
I definitely should have tried that, but living so far away it would have been a logistical nightmare (at the time I didn’t have a car). I’ve considered parking spaces as well but I don’t think the ROI is as high as with parking, though I’m sure the demand is probably much greater

7k was the total cost, storage units typically cost between 7-20k depending on size, neighbourhood etc. Rent again depends on the size but can range from between 70-150 EUR a month
