I worked on the old Carey Ranch, then called the Lewis Ranch, south of Chugwater in the early 60's. It is on Horse creek, just south of Bear creek. Story was that the old Little Bear stage stop (not the restaurant just north of Cheyenne) located on bear creek had an escape tunnel dug out to the creek bank in case of Indian attacks. More than once, if the Grange hall was close, we'd go on up to Chugwater for an evening's funning. And yes, I get asked about the name frequently, and always use the same story. Well done.
I love Chugwater… the area , the town and the people. Some people leave their hearts in San Fransico….think I left mine in Chugwater Wyoming when we relocated east in the mid 1980’s.
My grandmother's brother farmed dryland wheat and cattle there. Visited several times growing up in the 80s. This reminds me, raising my kids down here in Texas, I need to take them up to see the great state of Wyoming. I love that state.
I ran out of gas in chugwater one time about 2 in the morning and had to sit there till 6 waiting for somebody to show up and open the gas station so I could buy gas quite a few years back anyway seemed like a nice enough place to me the gas station guy was nice

My mother and two Uncles were born in Chugwater, as my grandfather worked for the TY Ranch one mile north of Chugwater Helen Elizabeth Cook.
Was on a wheat harvesting crew in 1981when we stopped for a couple weeks in Chugwater, beautiful countryside.
