    That is a genius idea Trent, never seen one but oh so good for starting a small cooking fire when its damp! Just what Smokey the Bear needs!

    In addition to your warning about the need for caution while quenching, heat travels up the tube a lot faster than heat travelling up a solid bar while in the forge. You can keep that from happening as much if you will seal off (even with tape!) the end of the tube that is not in the fire. If you leave the end open, the tube acts like a chimney and can get very hot very quickly.

    Someone asked me to make her one of these--I am just a newbie---but after watching this video--I am gonna copy it to a T. I am gonna make myself one of these and know a few people who would love one as a Christmas gift. Thanks for posting this video.

    Gonna add that to my list of campfire tools, like others, haven't even thought of using something to keep smoke out my face when lighting the fire.👍🤔

    How is it possible that, of all the possible little projects in the world, you posted this video right after DF in the Shop posted his own version of the same thing. I enjoyed seeing two different takes on the same concept. Thanks for the video.

      Who is DF? I filmed this some 8 months ago.

      Lou L I was wondering the same thing.

      Who Da Fu in the Shop is the one you should question Lou L. I saw that yesterday but skipped it for this right here. Pretty common in tubeland to remake or pre-make content when the right info is available to some and not others. Remember tvguides back in the old days, it wasnt random. Purgatoryironworks keeps my interest, but I can't wait for DF to tell you "coincidence". btw this isn't the first time.

      Bret Laverack I wasn't questioning anyone. I was pointing out the wild coincidence. Both smiths are quite capable and have many years of experience each. Dan Frechette has been doing traditional smithing for close to 40 years I think. Neither of these guys have any reason to copy others. They are talented and have forgotten more than Blacksmiths like me know.

    Just a quick thought on design of the holder. Instead of making a shoulder for the holder to sit in on the blow pipe, could you forge weld your ring into a figure eight, with one loop slightly smaller than the diameter of the blow pipe, the heat it up hot to expand it and slide it into the cold blowpipe. Letting it snug up as it cools?

    Great video enjoyed it but to add to the sizing and difference between tubes and pipe once pipe gets to 14” and up it changes to the od like tubing just to make it more complicated

    Bought a piece o f 1/2" weldable steel pipe from a hardware store. After a few heats and what I thought were gentle tappy-taps, the pipe started splitting in a straight line up the length where heated. Closer look and there appears to be a weld line the hole length of the pipe. WTHO?
    Did I do wrong? Too hot? Too big a tapper?

    Got a kick out of the little spider on your anvil as you started working. Once the camera was on it started to leave view and the hammering didn't bother it in the slightest lol.

      David L. Heyder Jr. , I'm not positive, but I think that was an adult male honey spider. Like its honey badger namesake, they don't care. 😋.

    I wish the measurements of tubing was always applied by everyone. Ran across a problem with such when doing my yard's drip system. Measure before buying.

  • @rollin18wheels
    @rollin18wheels 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok. Stupid newbie who also happens to be lazy question time. Would it be easier for an inexperienced smith to make the flare by placing the pein square in the end of the tube and giving it a good whack with a brass or lead mallet? Or is that just asking for trouble?

    how well would copper work for this?

    • @randoprior4130
      @randoprior4130 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      CutTimeBrony it could work but I would NOT heat it up to work it.

    • @rollin18wheels
      @rollin18wheels 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really well until the copper conducted the heat to the mouthpiece and burns your mouth and in addition to burning your lips off, left the taste of old pennies or school water fountain water in your mouth
