    Excellent video, thank you. I am new to blacksmithing and it is just a hobby for me, but I made this project and it turned out very well thanks to you.

    I had a smith tell me to use the curve of the leg vise to put the curve in the tongs. Works good.

  • @dustinmeier9753

    I'm interested to see some tonges made. particularly, how to heat treat them so get the spring action. Love the videos.

    • @ColtonKiso_HeathCreekForge
      @ColtonKiso_HeathCreekForge 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you leave the reins of the tongs rectangular about 4 in back then you will get a fair about of spring without heat treating.

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most tongs are never heat treated, the spring comes from the thickenss of the metal

    What do you use to finish cooking. utensils? the linseed oil is ok for that? thanks for your videos always love learning

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, you want whats called "flaxseed oil" . Technically, they are the same oil but linseed oil is processed wit ha bunch of solvents and other nastiness. Flaxseed is cold pressed and is what you want to use.

      Most smiths start by making a wall hook with a twist. The techniques used are essentially the foundation of blacksmithing.

    Great video! I have a question unrelated to this video. I am a wood worker and over the years have bought a lot of wood chisels. some are the socket style, but they have been hammered on, with out the handle and are all rounded over.I was wondering if you might do a video on how to repair them. Thank you !

    Is that stainless? I'd be amazed if it was with how easily you shaped it, though guess machining work is different to blacksmithing.

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope, this is just a mild steel, but 304 isnt too terribly different to work under. Now if get get into D2 and the like, phew, like hammering rocks

    I made a knife out of an air scissor blade. It is very hard steel. I have tried everything except heating it to drill a hole in the tang so I can put a handle on it. What suggestion do you have for me to be able to drill a hole in the tang? I was told that if I put heat to it that it would burn up instantly because of the high carbon content in the steel.

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, its not going to burn up. Bring it up to non magnetic temperature and bury in ash or vermiculite, let cool overnight. This will allow you to drill it. Then follow a standard high carbon steel hardening and tempering process to make it a good blade.

      @@purgatoryironworks thank you very much. I appreciate your information. I will try it and let you know how it turns out. Love your videos they are very helpful. Jeep up the good work.

    Very Good work there Trenton. question. Does the type of Fuel you use, (say Coal, Gas, Charcoal), have an effect on the finish of the piece you are making?? The Videos are getting better and better everytime you post!!...

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the only thing would be a decarburization of the surface but even that isnt going to affect the look.Getting it too hot will though!

    you can blacksmith stainless steel without ruining the properties?

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. If anything, as with most steel, there will be a slight de-carburization of the surface but its nothing that will affect the quality of the piece
